APS StechkinModel: APS Stechkin
The Stechkin is a recognizable, almost famous weapon that had a tragically short life. Named after its designer, Igor Stechkin, it was a semi-automatic pistol that was rather ordinary in many ways except for one: it could be set to fully automatic, making it a machine pistol. It was supplied with a detachable wood stock/holster to aid in controlling the weapon, but the fire rate (which could be as high as 900 rounds per minute) made it difficult to accurately fire anyway. Along with looking quite similar to the Tokarev TT-33, it has a similar operating system.

While the Stechkin was intended as a weapon for tank crews and artillery soldiers, the difficulty in controlling the machine pistol and difficulty in classifying it (was it a submachine gun, handgun, or in between) led to its replacement by the AKS-74U compact carbine. While the Stechkin was phased out of service, it remains in stock in traditional Russian form: in case of a great need for weapons, they can break out their old ones. The Model APB was a modern revival, accepted by some Russian law enforcement units, with a metal stock and threaded barrel for accepting a silencer.

Where to find

The Stechkin is in use with a few police and security forces in Russia in its newer APB form, and large stocks are believed to be in reserve in their arsenals. Actually purchasing one is difficult due to their rarity in the West and full auto capability; as Title II weapons they cost upwards of $20,000 and a $200 tax stamp. Semi-automatic weapons with the full auto capability deactivated can be over $600, more than an AK rifle.

Complexity

Like the Makarov that it appeared alongside, the Stechkin is a reliable and robust weapon well suited for work in the Soviet Union. One issue is finding spare parts, due to the rarity in the West.
