Steyr AUGModel: Steyr AUG
The Armee Universal Gewehr (Universal Army Rifle) was a revolutionary design at the time of its creation in 1977: it was a bullpup (placing the receiver behind the trigger group), making it much shorter than contemporary rifles while maintaining a long barrel for accuracy, had a large level of polymer and alloy components to make it extremely light, included a telescopic sight as standard, and can have parts swapped to turn it into a short-barreled carbine, support weapon, or 9mm submachine gun. A number of armies, most prominently Austria (who refer to it as the StG 77) and Australia (who call it the F88), have adopted it. The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have also taken a liking to it.

Among the variants are the AUG A2, with a new charging handle and a detachable scope with a Picatinny rail under it, the A3 with the scope replaced with a Picatinny rail along the top of the receiver, the A3 SA USA semi-auto variant of the A3 available for civilian sale in the United States, the AUG 9mm that feeds from the same magazines as the Steyr MPi 69 submachine gun, the HBAR and LMG variants with heavy barrels and bipods for work as a light machine gun, the AUG SA civilian variant banned from importation into the US in 1989, and the USR semi-auto variant designed to comply with the Federal Assault Weapons Ban. There are various other civilian variants, mostly with Picatinny rail systems in place of the scope.

Where to find

Unfortunately the many AUG models available on the civilian market are fairly difficult to find (like many civilian bullpup rifles) and command high prices of $2000 or higher.

Complexity

The AUG was designed first and foremost for military work, and the polymer/alloy construction are a perfect example of the design; in tests the AUG was run over by a truck and the only damage was the glass in the scope breaking. The AUG in all forms can take a good beating. Even better, a few parts can be swapped to make the rifle left-handed. Uniquely the AUG features a two-stage trigger: pulling lightly produces semi-auto fire, while pulling all the way back produces full auto bursts.
