Steyr SSG 69 PIModel: Steyr SSG 69
While not as famous as the Steyr Scout or a multitude of other sniper rifles that have appeared in film, TV, and video games for years, the SSG 69 is still an excellent weapon that deserves respect. It was first produced in 1969 for the Austrian Army and was ahead of its time: it used a synthetic stock and cold hammer-forged barrel for increased accuracy, two common design choices today. Ironically, despite the advanced design it mainly uses a rotary magazine design designed by Mannlicher before World War I. It has been the standard sniper rifle of the Austrian Army for several decades now and has seen use with worldwide police and military forces.

The PI is the name given to the civilian variant. The majority of the variants have mostly cosmetic differences except for the PIV, which has a shorter barrel rifled to allow for heavy subsonic ammunition to be accurately used.

Complexity

Like any bolt-action, the design is generally simpler and easier to maintain than a semi-automatic weapon. One thing to note is the use of a synthetic stock, which can easily be damaged by solvents used for cleaning the weapon.
