In a Top-Secret UN lab in the Antarctic, Scientists have discovered the cure for Virus Z. However, the Zombies have discovered them! Now the Scientists and their Commando bodyguards must fight their way through an unpredictable landscape, against a supernatural foe, all for the hope that humanity has survived long enough to die another day.
Chapter 1: 27th June, 2013
The Private fumbled with his radio before he turnedturning it on and informedinforming the Commander that "they've come". Klaxons and Sirens wailed throughout the fortified base as troops were wokenwaking up and preparedpreparing themselves, loading armoured vehicles were loaded with fresh munitions and fuel. In less than 10 minutes, the base was fully operational and alive with activity.activity Atand at that moment, hundreds of Zombies shuffledwere shuffling their way towards the base.
As the gates opened, it disgorged its contents of troops and vehicles. The forces scuttled around a bit to form a defensive line. Then silence, well, silence if you don't count the collective moan of hundreds of zombies. The Sergeants yelled at their troops to pull their weapons into a firing position. The Zombies then came within 200 metres of the line,line....... Thenthen 150............... then 100. OnceWhen they reachedwere 75 metres away from the troops, Thethe Commander gave the order to fire.A flash There ofwas lighta thatblinding wasflash almostof blindinglight as rockets, shells and bullets erupted from the line. When the projectiles hit home, Zombies fell over, limbs flew off and some were even blown up by a direct rocket hit, spraying blood and gore and colouring the ground with a brownish-red. This continued on for hours, with each Zombie going down, 5 more filling the breach. Zombies where getting very close to the line now and Ammunition was drying up. Some soldiers, unmanned by their fear, ran back to a safe distance.
The Commander saw how close they were getting and ordered the line to fall back to the base. The Sergeants relayed the order and everyone ran, not willing to be caught by the Zombies. When everyone was safely in the Compound, the Commander had a new order, defend the walls of the Compound. As the troops, fatigued from the previous battle used what energy they had to run up onto the walls, the Zombies were already banging on the walls, moaning.moaning Thoseas those on the wall brought their weapons to a firing position, knowing that if these things aren't held off, this Base would be lost and with it a large amount of hope for Mankind.
They began firing their weapons upon the Horde trying to breach the Base.
Chapter 2: 28th June, 2013
"Come on, COME ON!" screamed Singh as he started pound his fists on his desk in frustration. He had been trying to see if the Receiver will pick up Radio transmissions from his home country, India. "Still trying, huh?" saidcame a voice with a slight Russian accent. Singh spun around to see Alena leaning to one side of the doorway, holding a mug of hot beverage. "Yeah" was all he could say. Too tired being frustrated. Alena walked over and sat in another chair in Singh's room, looking at him. "I just can't believe the virus originated in China, so close to India" saidexclaimed Singh, who had now turned his attention back to the receiver.
"It was also VERY close to Russia as well" Singh looked around to Alena, who was smiling obliviously.
Of course thought Singh how could I be so selfish? Russia was sharing borders with China, something India wasn't doing at the start of the outbreak. As such, Russia had to face a massive influx of refugees from China, Mongolia, Nepal and a great many other countries. And a great many of the refugees were infected, which further made the nightmare worse. India wasn't hit with the outbreak until August 2011, about 3 months after Russia was wholly invaded with the infected.
However, Singh's concentration was broken by a wolf howling. Singh and Alena looked around the room for the source, getting out of their chairs and searching throughout the room. They finally found the disturbance outside the room, coming from Sergeant Scott Woods, or Rancor, his call-sign. After the ensuing chase of Scott through the base, throwing various tools at him, he managed to escape, still laughing, as Singh and Alena slumped to floor exhausted. "Bloody kid" breathed Singh, as he and Alena started laughing at what they had just done. But their laughter was cut short when the announcement came that all staff were to report to the main hall, in their work gear. After saying their goodbyes, Singh and Alena walked back to their separate rooms to get dressed. Singh arrived to his room and opened up the closet, seeing various white lab-coats, all the same. Singh selected one and put it on over his existing attire, which was a long sleeve shirt and jeans. He then began the walk to the main hall. That's odd thought Singh as he made his way to the main hall Scientists are usually sent to the room outside the lab, this had better be important.
When he arrived, he was the last one. He saw Sergeant Scott Woods and Sergeant Benjamin Walter, or Chewie, flanked the door he entered. They were both at-the-ready, wielding full combat gear. As Singh walked past them, he saw that everyone, Scientists and Soldiers, were surrounding the man in charge, Alúf (Major General) Amzi, or Vader. Amzi looked at Singh until he sat down. He then began his speech.
"Scientists and Soldiers of Top-Secret UN research lab Death Star, last night, at approximately 21:45 hours, Andrew and Paul made a fantastic discovery. I know let them speak of their discovery". There was a clapping as Andrew and Paul took to the centre. Paul, the Australian Scientist, was first to speak.
"As Amzi has said, at 21:45 hours last night, we made a fantastic discovery. We found that Virus Z be cured".
Paul let news of the discovery make its impact on the audience. Everyone gasped and the main hall was alive with whispers and muttering between Soldiers and Scientists. Amzi cleared his throat loud enough for everyone to hear it and a silence returned over the hall. Andrew took to the centre, with a projector displaying a PowerPoint display of the process. "As you can see, the molecule of the drug bears resemblance to Imovax PM-1503-3M " he uses a laser pointer to point at certain areas of resemblance "however, a large amount of restraint is required to keep the infected person stable enough to administer it" the slide changes and shows a diagram showing the amount of restraints needed. The slide-show ends there, with a massive amount of applause from around the hall. "Um, I have a question" the hand of another Scientist, African-American Sean Wilson was raised in the air. "Yes?" asked Paul.
"I want to know, how does it work?"
"Good Question," replied Andrew "It works through using modified anti-bodies to capture a molecule of the virus. It then takes it to the immune system, where the immune system is put under intense pressure by the Imovax part of the drug to produce anti-bodies capable of destroying Virus Z. However, this puts the infected under intense pain. Even the infected will be screaming from the pain. Also, if the infected as been severly decayed or injured, the drug will bring them back, only for them to die from their injuries."
"So, only recently turned can be cured and live on?"
"True. The fresher the infected is, the better chances for survival. Anymore questions?"
"Yes, one more. Why restrain the person?"
"Another good question. Because of the pain the body will be put under, the infected may try, and probably will try, to inflict self-harm to make the pain go away. This is theorised to culminate in suicide."
"I see. Thank You."
Chapter 3: 5th July, 2013
Rancor and Sergeant Matthew O'Connor, or Solo, were stationed on look-out duty over the lab and, as always, nothing much was happening. That was changing, however. The lab had been sending out communication signals to various UN bases around the world, relaying news of their cure. The UN was so pleased that it sent the order for the Scientists to move out to the closest UN base located in the far south of South America, near Punta Arenas. Once there, they are to start training the Scientists there in how to administer the drug and begin replicating it. It is forecast to take about a fortnight. Then they reload and move to the next base and so on and so forth. If they manage to survive and the mission is a success and they visit all the bases, the UN can start curing the infected masses and take back the world, one infected person at a time. "I wonder how the pommies handled it" Rancor jokingly yelled at Solo.
"Better than you guys!" was Solo's reply
"Why?”
"You guys aren't as hardened as we chilly warriors are" Solo put a hand to his chest and began singing the English national Anthem.
Rancor scooped up some snow and threw it at him. They both started laughing. But the laughter was cut short when Rancor spotted 5 figures shambling towards the base. He signalled at Solo. They both pulled their long-range rifles to a firing position and took aim. These figures were dressed in cold-weather gear, albeit ripped and torn, but adequate to provide enough cold-weather protection to anything, dead or alive. Rancor told Solo to fall back to the base and raise the alarm. Rancor stayed put, levelled his rifle at the nearest one and pulled the trigger. Clean Head-shot. The thing went down like a sack of potatoes. Rancor repeated the process 4 more times. Soon, all 5 were lying in the cold, to be quickly covered by the snow. Rancor then promptly fell-back to the base, just as the alarms went off.
Chapter 4: 5th July, 2015
Singh was abruptly woken up by wailing sirens. Almost immediately he was in battle-mode, scooping his belongings into a duffel bag under his bed, slipping on his cold-weather gear, which included a pair of goggles given to him by his younger brother, "newest recruit" to the Indian Army, Abhay Abhijat, as a more practical good-bye gift. He smiled briefly at the memories, then immediately went back to the task at hand. Before he slung his duffel bag over his shoulder, he said a quick prayer and pulled out all the clothes in his closet to reach the weapon at the back, an FN P-90 USG with an integrated laser pointer and a removable suppressor. He also pulled out a box of ammo for his gun a threw it in his duffel bag. He then swung his duffel over his shoulder, picked up his fire-arm and began to make his way to Alena's room. Gotta make sure she's OK thought Singh as he raced through the corridors. He was about 10 doors away from her room when he unexpectedly bumped into her. After he shook his head, Singh asked "Alena, are you OK?"
"Yeah, I'm fine, I.........is that a P-90?"
Singh looked down and saw he was still carrying the gun. How could I forget? thought Singh as tried thinking of an excuse.
"Never mind, let’s go, you can explain later".
Singh's chain of thought was broken as he saw Alena half-way down the corridor, gesturing for him to come. Singh began to follow Alena, thinking up an excuse. They finally made their way to the garage, where everything was chaos. Amzi, was going over deployment plans with Colonel Robert Green, or Yoda. Troops readied their snow-sleds and the Scientists' personal transports, three large and heavily-modified Track Cargo and People Mover vehicles. These would serve as mobile headquarters, providing food, supplies and shelter to the personnel. Alena and Singh were ushered on the second one, waiting for them were the rest of Scientists, the driver and Solo. Once Alena and Singh made themselves comfortable, Singh looked out the window and saw the troops were on their Snow-Sleds, Amzi had climbed into the first Vehicle and the automatic doors were lifting up. Soon the convoy, four one-man escort snow-sleds and three heavy-duty, heavily-modified vehicles had driven off into the night. The automatic doors slammed shut and Death Star was as quiet as a ghost town.
Chapter 5: 7th July, 2013
for two days they had been on the move, only stopping to rest and fix the rare problem with the vehicles. "Kinda boring, huh?" Singh snapped out of his thoughts and saw Paul was talking to Alena. "Yeah, I came here for adventure. All I got was Russia, but colder"
"But there ARE fewer Zombies, right?"
"Yeah, I suppose Antarctica IS good for that"
They both started laughing. Singh allowed himself a little smile before drifting back to sleep.
The roar of the motor, the howling of the cutting wind blowing onto your face and past your ears, this is what 1st Lieutenant Victor Robinson, or Saarlac, was made for. Riding quads and bikes over his father's farm when he was boy gave him the thrills of a lifetime, now here he was, riding a snow-sled many times more powerful than any of his quads and bikes, over a dangerous and unpredictable terrain. Those wusses call this precision driving, he calls it FUN! Roaring over another bump, he let out a howl of the sheer ecstasy of the moment. +Saarlac, please keep the antics for when the future of mankind ISN'T in the balance. Thank You, over+ came over his radio, bringing him back to Earth.
"Huh, wusses" scoffed Saarlac as he made his reply. +Yep, copy that Yoda, over+. He then let himself smirk. Then smile. The he started laughing. "Ah, the hell with it!" he screamed as he let out a big "Woo-who!" as he flew over another bump in the landscape.
Chapter 6: 12th July, 2013
After a week of seemingly non-stop travel, the convoy finally arrived at the airfield, which was thankfully still occupied and uninfected. Amzi was the first to disembark and shake hands with the man in charge, an old friend of Amzi’s, Nigerian Air Marshal Jero Aluko. “Long time no see, old friend” greeted Amzi as they shook hands.
“Indeed Amzi,” Jero paused and looked at how old Amzi appeared, it had been over 2 years ago when they last met, “perhaps too long”. They both laughed as Jero motioned for Amzi to walk with him. “So, what are you here for?” Jero questioned.
“Our Scientists have found a cure to Solanum”
“Wha.....They......found.....WHAT?!?!” Was all Jero could utter. UNBELIEVEABLE!! Thought Jero This disease, this virus this, PANDEMIC can be destroyed! Well I thought I’d never see the day, and after that battle last week I had pretty much given up. Well, that’s what you get. Doubt the lady of fate and she’ll slap you in the face with something you’ll never see coming. Jero snapped out of his thought to see Amzi looking at him, waiting for his attention.
“Erm...Uh....yes, continue” saidordered Jero.
“Yes. As I said before, the Scientists have found a cure to Solanum. It is done using a specially-built drug, which I do not have the time to discuss.”
“I see” “That’s not all”
“Not all? What do you mean?”
“We have been in contact with the UN, well, what’s left of it, and they have agreed that we are to visit their nearest base in near Punta Arenas”
“That’s a long way”
“Yes. Anyways, we are to train the Scientists there to administer it, program machines to replicate it, then we are to move to the next base and so on” “So THAT’S why you are here”
“Yeah. That and another reason”
“Another reason?”
“Over a week ago, Rancor dispatched 5 hostiles. We have right to believe they were infected from eye-witness reports from Rancor and Solo themselves”
“Well, unfortunately, you weren’t the only ones to receive unwelcome visitors”
“What do you mean?”
“Less than six-days ago, a horde, about 50-strong, attacked the airfield. We managed to hold kill them, but we lost 5 men. May God be with them” Jero made a quick cross symbol across his chest.
“Indeed”
“So, you need transport to the 50 Let Pobedy?”
“Yeah” “How many?”
“10 Scientists and 50 Special Forces Operatives, excluding me”
“All at once?”
“That would be favorable”
“Sorry, no can do. Foutunatley, our MH-47G Chinook just came back nearly 5 days ago after a re-supply mission to the Aurora Australis”
“Good. When can it be operational?”
“Any time you wish”
“Good. I’ll let them rest here for a couple of days. Then we take off.”
“I see,” Jero’s mood turned sullen.
“You probably won’t survive, will you?”
“No probably not” “Well, we have a LOT to catch up on, don’t we?”
“Yes. Well where do we start?”
“How about the gossip?” They both laughed as they walked into the operations building.
Chapter 7: 13th July, 2013
Squadron Leader Patrick Marchetta leaned against the outside wall of a hangar, lighting a cigarette. He was extremely traumatised by the Zombie attack on the air field, and found that cigarettes helped calm him. As he blew out the smoke, he looked up at the sky, wondering if there will be an end to this war, or outbreak or whatever the hell officials called it. He had lost his wife and his family to this disease, just the thought made his blood boil. Mother, Father, My Christina, I will try my best to see you avenged he thought to himself as he gazed at the unchanged night sky. Then he heard footsteps to his right. He dropped his cigarette and whipped around, bringing his sidearm to bear. Then he saw them, 5 infected, moaning and shambling their way towards him. He began to fire at the infected, his anger rising, but to no avail. Soon they were on top of him, ripping him apart. He let out a scream.
Major Luther Patricks, or Jawa, was the first, along with about 15 pilots inside the hangar, to hear the gunshots, the moaning and the scream. "Shut the Doors! Lock 'em!" yelled Jawa as pilots scrambled to carry out the orders. Meanwhile, Jawa went for his radio strapped to his waist and went to channel 5, the channel all radios were to be tuned to.
+This is Jawa, repeat, this is Jawa. Infected have found the airfield, repeat, Infected have found the airfield! All personnel resort to defensive protocol 5, repeat defensive protocol 5! +. He placed his radio back on his belt and brought his REC-7 to a firing position, scanning the hangar for any breaches. The north-eastern door broke in, with infected pouring in. Pilots, having already secured the other doors, raced to cover; behind fuel tanks, on elevated walkways, behind any one of the 3 Blackhawks that occupied the hangar. Some even just stood there and fired into the horde. Jawa ran to the defensive line. "Hey! Aim for the head! Shooting anywhere else will get you nowhere!" screamed Jawa over the bangs of the pistols. He brought his REC-7 to bear on horde as the order was shouted again by a few pilots. He began to fire at the heads. Some zombies began to drop with bullet-holes in their heads from the 9mm bullets fired by the pistols, other's heads exploded as they were picked off by Jawa. Yet still more infected poured through.
"Kill yourselves if you are overrun! Don't let these fucking bastards eat you alive!" was the final order of Jawa. It was to be another half-hour of slaughter until the hangar fell silent, Jawa and the pilots dead, overwhelmed by the sheer number of Zombies. Elsewhere around the airfield, there was constant gunfire as the airfield became a battle ground.
Singh woke from his slumber in the second barracks to the sound of gunfire and klaxons. He saw that his room-mates, Andrew, Paul and an English Scientist called Gerald, were wide awake, loading firearms and checking they were in working order. Singh jumped out of bed and began to do the same. It was silence for a few minutes before Gerald walked to the door, put his hand on the knob and said to the others "Let's Go". The four Scientists walked cautiously down the hallway in silence, checking to make sure no Zombies were inside. In fact, the barracks was deserted. As they made their way outside, it was like a war-zone. Black Hawks circled around the base, sharpshooters inside them picking off Zombies, Zombies shambled around the base, moaning. There was a moaning to the left. The four whipped around and saw 10 shambling towards them. "Aim for the head" saiduttered Gerald, in a surprisingly calm tone, like he was suppressing his anger. Singh brought his P-90 to bear, dispatching four before his team took out the rest. "What do we do?" questioned Singh
"We make for the first barracks, try and see if anyone survived" answered Gerald
"Then?" saidasked a slightly demoralised Paul
"Make our way to HQ, blasting any of those fuckers that try to mess with us" answered Gerald again. Singh, Andrew and Paul looked at each other with surprise. This is Gerald? All three of them thought as they walked with Gerald to first barracks.
Chapter 8: 13th July, 2013
They finally made their way to first barracks. A couple of Zombies, about 5 or 6 were dispatched on the journey. The four went in and searched, surprisingly or not, it was empty. "Right, we go to HQ" ordered Gerald as he signalled his team to follow as he made a run for HQ. "Oh, jeez" breathed Andrew as the three tried to keep up, only stopping to "blast", as Gerald put it, the occasional Zombie which, by the end of the break for HQ, ended being a fair chunk of the horde.
As they arrived at HQ, they saw that zombies were coming from the sides and behind, many dropping as 9mms and REC-7s blasted from the fortified gun points of the building. "Hey! you guys! Quickly!" came from the opened door as 2nd Lieutenant James O'Reily, or Jango, beckoned them to come in. The four sprinted to the opening, blasting inside and panting as Jango locked the door. "Jango, what's going on?" panted Gerald.
"A massive horde found the airfield, and, as you know, is attacking it. We've lost 20 pilots, Boba," Jango flinched when he mentioned Boba, his younger brother, Private Matthew O'Reily, "Jawa, Grevious, Maul and Windu, and we still haven't accounted for Jabba, Lando, Ackbar, Tarkin or Dooku".
"Shit" was all Gerald could utter.
"On the positive side", Jango continued, "You four were the last Scientists here"
"Which means?" breathed Singh
"All 10 of you have been accounted for and are safe"
"Oh thank God" sighed Singh. Alena is safe thought Singh as relief washed over him.
"Anything else?" asked Paul
"Yeah, only me Jero, Vader, Rancor, Yoda, Solo, Grevious, Bail, Jar-Jar and Jero's lieutenants are holed up here. Other elements are out in other parts of the airfield. Vader is co-ordinating them so that we can launch a counter-offensive".
"I see" saidbreathed Paul.
+Jango, this is Vader. I have decided the best course of action is that we have to break cover and relieve the other people trapped around the base+ came over Jango’s radio.
+You sure? What about the scientists? +
+That’s the first part of the plan. We need to escort them to the lead transport and see that they are safely inside, and then we move out and fight back+. There was silence.
+Right, got that, when do we move? +

+Got it+. Jango put his radio back. He looked back up at the four, who were staring back at him, looking very concerned. “Okay, you guys stay here, I’ve got to get back to defending the place” ordered Jango as he went to the nearest gun point.
“So, we just wait here?” asked Singh.
“Yes, Singh” replied Gerald.
Chapter 9: 13th, July 2013
In a few moments, the defenders of HQ were to break cover and launch a rescue operation to try and take back the airfield. Vader was at the front, bending down slightly, holding his SiG Sauer, Jero and his lieutenants behind him, each holding their 9mm. Next were the Scientists, followed by Rancor, Solo, Yoda, Grievous, and Jar-Jar, forming the rearguard. “Okay, when we get out there, be prepared for ANYTHING. We make for the lead Transport, drop the Scientists off in there, then we move out and rescue those men” Ordered Vader.
“Got it”
“Right”
“Yep” came from several people. Singh, along with the rest of the group, bended down slightly, holding his P-90 at-the-ready.
“Singh” Singh turned around to Alena, who was looking at him with concern.
“Yeah?” replied Singh.
“If we don’t survive....”
“Don’t be silly, we WILL survive this, mankind depends on it”
“Please stop being so Gung-Ho”
“Okay, sorry”
“Look if we don’t survive, I want to give you something”
“What?”. Alena leant forward and kissed Singh. Whoa! What?!?! Thought Singh. The kiss lasted a few moments before Alena pulled away, and began looking at his surprised face, like she was meaning to do that for a long time. “Okay! GO! GO! GO!” yelled Vader as he opened the door and rushed off into the night, closely followed by the others.
Chapter 10: 13th July 2013
“Hostiles to the left!” yelled Rancor as he fired three shots off, downing three Zombies that had come around the right of HQ.
“In front!” yelled Jero as Amzi let off two shots, two headless Zombies dropping, dead.
“Keep mobile! We have the advantage of speed!” yelled Amzi as Jango threw a grenade into a pack of three dozen Zombies approaching from the right. Blood and limbs flew everywhere; zombies fell over from the blast, only to get back up again. The immediate area was painted a brownish-red. “Help Me!” yelled Jango as he began picking off survivors. Rancor and Solo supported Jango in mopping up.
“How long ‘till we get there?” yelled a slightly shell-shocked Singh.
“I can see it! Only a few moments now!” yelled Amzi as he whipped to his right, dropping five Zombies in quick succession. The lead transport loomed like a dark-shadow. Once they reached it, Vader popped the door. “Okay! Get in! Get in! Go! Go! Go!” ordered Amzi as, one-by-one, the Scientists scrambled into the Transport.
Singh was last in, as he scrambled up, Vader grabbed his leg.
He whipped around.
“Singh,” said Vader, looking“Singh, up at him “Youyou are the only one with military experience, let alone training in the Garud Commando Force. If Zombies assault this vehicle, I expect you to keep them alive. You know what happens if you guys die. Many deaths would have been in vain, and Mankind won’t have another light of hope like what we have for who-knows-how-long?”
“Right, got it.” Answered Singh, all the while thinking My god! So that’s why Vader was chosen. Not because of his progidical military skill, but because he has an unbreakable will and a power in his words that will place hope in even the most demoralised army's hearts.
Then Singh registered another thing Vader said. What? How did he know that? I didn’t say that to anyone! Not even my family knows, or knew. Singh then looked down to see the door had closed and the men were gone, to start part two. How long was I there? Thought Singh, then proceeded to climb up into the main part of the transport, where the rest of the Scientists were, making themselves comfortable and those with guns keeping them close-at-hand.
“What took you so long?” questioned Andrew as the other Scientists looked at Singh.
“Uh, nothing, Vader just wanted to wish me, US, good luck” replied Singh.
“Ah” saidexclaimed Andrew as him and the others went back to doing whatever it was they were. Singh looked around at the Scientists, each of them looking very concerned; Singh could see it in their eyes, although they did mask it very well. He smiled and went to the driver compartment, sat in the driver’s seat, brought the P-90 to his chest, leaned back in the seat and watched.
Waited.
“Whatcha waiting for, Cee-dog?” Singh turned his head around and saw Sean walk in, followed by Alena.
“Hey Sean,” saidwelcomed Singh as he and Sean did their handshake, a fairly elaborate one. “Hey Alena” said Singh as Alena sat in the passenger’s seat whilst Sean found a portable chair and moved it behind the two and sat down.
“So, as I said, what are you waiting for?” asked Sean.
“Those things” replied Singh, returning to looking outside.
“Ah come on, it’s not like they saw us” said Sean.
“Probably not. Oh yeah, what are you guys doing here?” asked Singh
“Us?” said Alena “we thought you could use some company”.
“Ah. Thanks guys.”
“Think nothing of it.”
“Nah, its cool Cee-dog.” Singh looked around and saw them both smiling at him. Singh smiled, and thought with friends like these, who needs enemies?
In a Top-Secret UN lab in the Antarctic, Scientists have discovered the cure for Virus Z. However, the Zombies have discovered them! Now the Scientists and their Commando bodyguards must fight their way through an unpredictable landscape, against a supernatural foe, all for the hope that humanity has survived long enough to die another day.Chapter 1: 27th June, 2013
The Private fumbled with his radio before he turnedturning it on and informedinforming the Commander that "they've come". Klaxons and Sirens wailed throughout the fortified base as troops were wokenwaking up and preparedpreparing themselves, loading armoured vehicles were loaded with fresh munitions and fuel. In less than 10 minutes, the base was fully operational and alive with activity.activity Atand at that moment, hundreds of Zombies shuffledwere shuffling their way towards the base.
As the gates opened, it disgorged its contents of troops and vehicles. The forces scuttled around a bit to form a defensive line. Then silence, well, silence if you don't count the collective moan of hundreds of zombies. The Sergeants yelled at their troops to pull their weapons into a firing position. The Zombies then came within 200 metres of the line,line....... Thenthen 150............... then 100. OnceWhen they reachedwere 75 metres away from the troops, Thethe Commander gave the order to fire.A flash There ofwas lighta thatblinding wasflash almostof blindinglight as rockets, shells and bullets erupted from the line. When the projectiles hit home, Zombies fell over, limbs flew off and some were even blown up by a direct rocket hit, spraying blood and gore and colouring the ground with a brownish-red. This continued on for hours, with each Zombie going down, 5 more filling the breach. Zombies where getting very close to the line now and Ammunition was drying up. Some soldiers, unmanned by their fear, ran back to a safe distance.
The Commander saw how close they were getting and ordered the line to fall back to the base. The Sergeants relayed the order and everyone ran, not willing to be caught by the Zombies. When everyone was safely in the Compound, the Commander had a new order, defend the walls of the Compound. As the troops, fatigued from the previous battle used what energy they had to run up onto the walls, the Zombies were already banging on the walls, moaning.moaning Thoseas those on the wall brought their weapons to a firing position, knowing that if these things aren't held off, this Base would be lost and with it a large amount of hope for Mankind.
They began firing their weapons upon the Horde trying to breach the Base.
Chapter 2: 28th June, 2013
"Come on, COME ON!" screamed Singh as he started pound his fists on his desk in frustration. He had been trying to see if the Receiver will pick up Radio transmissions from his home country, India. "Still trying, huh?" saidcame a voice with a slight Russian accent. Singh spun around to see Alena leaning to one side of the doorway, holding a mug of hot beverage. "Yeah" was all he could say. Too tired being frustrated. Alena walked over and sat in another chair in Singh's room, looking at him. "I just can't believe the virus originated in China, so close to India" saidexclaimed Singh, who had now turned his attention back to the receiver.
"It was also VERY close to Russia as well" Singh looked around to Alena, who was smiling obliviously.
Of course thought Singh how could I be so selfish? Russia was sharing borders with China, something India wasn't doing at the start of the outbreak. As such, Russia had to face a massive influx of refugees from China, Mongolia, Nepal and a great many other countries. And a great many of the refugees were infected, which further made the nightmare worse. India wasn't hit with the outbreak until August 2011, about 3 months after Russia was wholly invaded with the infected.
However, Singh's concentration was broken by a wolf howling. Singh and Alena looked around the room for the source, getting out of their chairs and searching throughout the room. They finally found the disturbance outside the room, coming from Sergeant Scott Woods, or Rancor, his call-sign. After the ensuing chase of Scott through the base, throwing various tools at him, he managed to escape, still laughing, as Singh and Alena slumped to floor exhausted. "Bloody kid" breathed Singh, as he and Alena started laughing at what they had just done. But their laughter was cut short when the announcement came that all staff were to report to the main hall, in their work gear. After saying their goodbyes, Singh and Alena walked back to their separate rooms to get dressed. Singh arrived to his room and opened up the closet, seeing various white lab-coats, all the same. Singh selected one and put it on over his existing attire, which was a long sleeve shirt and jeans. He then began the walk to the main hall. That's odd thought Singh as he made his way to the main hall Scientists are usually sent to the room outside the lab, this had better be important.
When he arrived, he was the last one. He saw Sergeant Scott Woods and Sergeant Benjamin Walter, or Chewie, flanked the door he entered. They were both at-the-ready, wielding full combat gear. As Singh walked past them, he saw that everyone, Scientists and Soldiers, were surrounding the man in charge, Alúf (Major General) Amzi, or Vader. Amzi looked at Singh until he sat down. He then began his speech.
"Scientists and Soldiers of Top-Secret UN research lab Death Star, last night, at approximately 21:45 hours, Andrew and Paul made a fantastic discovery. I know let them speak of their discovery". There was a clapping as Andrew and Paul took to the centre. Paul, the Australian Scientist, was first to speak.
"As Amzi has said, at 21:45 hours last night, we made a fantastic discovery. We found that Virus Z be cured".
Paul let news of the discovery make its impact on the audience. Everyone gasped and the main hall was alive with whispers and muttering between Soldiers and Scientists. Amzi cleared his throat loud enough for everyone to hear it and a silence returned over the hall. Andrew took to the centre, with a projector displaying a PowerPoint display of the process. "As you can see, the molecule of the drug bears resemblance to Imovax PM-1503-3M " he uses a laser pointer to point at certain areas of resemblance "however, a large amount of restraint is required to keep the infected person stable enough to administer it" the slide changes and shows a diagram showing the amount of restraints needed. The slide-show ends there, with a massive amount of applause from around the hall. "Um, I have a question" the hand of another Scientist, African-American Sean Wilson was raised in the air. "Yes?" asked Paul.
"I want to know, how does it work?"
"Good Question," replied Andrew "It works through using modified anti-bodies to capture a molecule of the virus. It then takes it to the immune system, where the immune system is put under intense pressure by the Imovax part of the drug to produce anti-bodies capable of destroying Virus Z. However, this puts the infected under intense pain. Even the infected will be screaming from the pain. Also, if the infected as been severly decayed or injured, the drug will bring them back, only for them to die from their injuries."
"So, only recently turned can be cured and live on?"
"True. The fresher the infected is, the better chances for survival. Anymore questions?"
"Yes, one more. Why restrain the person?"
"Another good question. Because of the pain the body will be put under, the infected may try, and probably will try, to inflict self-harm to make the pain go away. This is theorised to culminate in suicide."
"I see. Thank You."
Chapter 3: 5th July, 2013
Rancor and Sergeant Matthew O'Connor, or Solo, were stationed on look-out duty over the lab and, as always, nothing much was happening. That was changing, however. The lab had been sending out communication signals to various UN bases around the world, relaying news of their cure. The UN was so pleased that it sent the order for the Scientists to move out to the closest UN base located in the far south of South America, near Punta Arenas. Once there, they are to start training the Scientists there in how to administer the drug and begin replicating it. It is forecast to take about a fortnight. Then they reload and move to the next base and so on and so forth. If they manage to survive and the mission is a success and they visit all the bases, the UN can start curing the infected masses and take back the world, one infected person at a time. "I wonder how the pommies handled it" Rancor jokingly yelled at Solo.
"Better than you guys!" was Solo's reply
"Why?”
"You guys aren't as hardened as we chilly warriors are" Solo put a hand to his chest and began singing the English national Anthem.
Rancor scooped up some snow and threw it at him. They both started laughing. But the laughter was cut short when Rancor spotted 5 figures shambling towards the base. He signalled at Solo. They both pulled their long-range rifles to a firing position and took aim. These figures were dressed in cold-weather gear, albeit ripped and torn, but adequate to provide enough cold-weather protection to anything, dead or alive. Rancor told Solo to fall back to the base and raise the alarm. Rancor stayed put, levelled his rifle at the nearest one and pulled the trigger. Clean Head-shot. The thing went down like a sack of potatoes. Rancor repeated the process 4 more times. Soon, all 5 were lying in the cold, to be quickly covered by the snow. Rancor then promptly fell-back to the base, just as the alarms went off.
Chapter 4: 5th July, 2015
Singh was abruptly woken up by wailing sirens. Almost immediately he was in battle-mode, scooping his belongings into a duffel bag under his bed, slipping on his cold-weather gear, which included a pair of goggles given to him by his younger brother, "newest recruit" to the Indian Army, Abhay Abhijat, as a more practical good-bye gift. He smiled briefly at the memories, then immediately went back to the task at hand. Before he slung his duffel bag over his shoulder, he said a quick prayer and pulled out all the clothes in his closet to reach the weapon at the back, an FN P-90 USG with an integrated laser pointer and a removable suppressor. He also pulled out a box of ammo for his gun a threw it in his duffel bag. He then swung his duffel over his shoulder, picked up his fire-arm and began to make his way to Alena's room. Gotta make sure she's OK thought Singh as he raced through the corridors. He was about 10 doors away from her room when he unexpectedly bumped into her. After he shook his head, Singh asked "Alena, are you OK?"
"Yeah, I'm fine, I.........is that a P-90?"
Singh looked down and saw he was still carrying the gun. How could I forget? thought Singh as tried thinking of an excuse.
"Never mind, let’s go, you can explain later".
Singh's chain of thought was broken as he saw Alena half-way down the corridor, gesturing for him to come. Singh began to follow Alena, thinking up an excuse. They finally made their way to the garage, where everything was chaos. Amzi, was going over deployment plans with Colonel Robert Green, or Yoda. Troops readied their snow-sleds and the Scientists' personal transports, three large and heavily-modified Track Cargo and People Mover vehicles. These would serve as mobile headquarters, providing food, supplies and shelter to the personnel. Alena and Singh were ushered on the second one, waiting for them were the rest of Scientists, the driver and Solo. Once Alena and Singh made themselves comfortable, Singh looked out the window and saw the troops were on their Snow-Sleds, Amzi had climbed into the first Vehicle and the automatic doors were lifting up. Soon the convoy, four one-man escort snow-sleds and three heavy-duty, heavily-modified vehicles had driven off into the night. The automatic doors slammed shut and Death Star was as quiet as a ghost town.
Chapter 5: 7th July, 2013
for two days they had been on the move, only stopping to rest and fix the rare problem with the vehicles. "Kinda boring, huh?" Singh snapped out of his thoughts and saw Paul was talking to Alena. "Yeah, I came here for adventure. All I got was Russia, but colder"
"But there ARE fewer Zombies, right?"
"Yeah, I suppose Antarctica IS good for that"
They both started laughing. Singh allowed himself a little smile before drifting back to sleep.
The roar of the motor, the howling of the cutting wind blowing onto your face and past your ears, this is what 1st Lieutenant Victor Robinson, or Saarlac, was made for. Riding quads and bikes over his father's farm when he was boy gave him the thrills of a lifetime, now here he was, riding a snow-sled many times more powerful than any of his quads and bikes, over a dangerous and unpredictable terrain. Those wusses call this precision driving, he calls it FUN! Roaring over another bump, he let out a howl of the sheer ecstasy of the moment. +Saarlac, please keep the antics for when the future of mankind ISN'T in the balance. Thank You, over+ came over his radio, bringing him back to Earth.
"Huh, wusses" scoffed Saarlac as he made his reply. +Yep, copy that Yoda, over+. He then let himself smirk. Then smile. The he started laughing. "Ah, the hell with it!" he screamed as he let out a big "Woo-who!" as he flew over another bump in the landscape.
Chapter 6: 12th July, 2013
After a week of seemingly non-stop travel, the convoy finally arrived at the airfield, which was thankfully still occupied and uninfected. Amzi was the first to disembark and shake hands with the man in charge, an old friend of Amzi’s, Nigerian Air Marshal Jero Aluko. “Long time no see, old friend” greeted Amzi as they shook hands.
“Indeed Amzi,” Jero paused and looked at how old Amzi appeared, it had been over 2 years ago when they last met, “perhaps too long”. They both laughed as Jero motioned for Amzi to walk with him. “So, what are you here for?” Jero questioned.
“Our Scientists have found a cure to Solanum”
“Wha.....They......found.....WHAT?!?!” Was all Jero could utter. UNBELIEVEABLE!! Thought Jero This disease, this virus this, PANDEMIC can be destroyed! Well I thought I’d never see the day, and after that battle last week I had pretty much given up. Well, that’s what you get. Doubt the lady of fate and she’ll slap you in the face with something you’ll never see coming. Jero snapped out of his thought to see Amzi looking at him, waiting for his attention.
“Erm...Uh....yes, continue” saidordered Jero.
“Yes. As I said before, the Scientists have found a cure to Solanum. It is done using a specially-built drug, which I do not have the time to discuss.”
“I see” “That’s not all”
“Not all? What do you mean?”
“We have been in contact with the UN, well, what’s left of it, and they have agreed that we are to visit their nearest base in near Punta Arenas”
“That’s a long way”
“Yes. Anyways, we are to train the Scientists there to administer it, program machines to replicate it, then we are to move to the next base and so on” “So THAT’S why you are here”
“Yeah. That and another reason”
“Another reason?”
“Over a week ago, Rancor dispatched 5 hostiles. We have right to believe they were infected from eye-witness reports from Rancor and Solo themselves”
“Well, unfortunately, you weren’t the only ones to receive unwelcome visitors”
“What do you mean?”
“Less than six-days ago, a horde, about 50-strong, attacked the airfield. We managed to hold kill them, but we lost 5 men. May God be with them” Jero made a quick cross symbol across his chest.
“Indeed”
“So, you need transport to the 50 Let Pobedy?”
“Yeah” “How many?”
“10 Scientists and 50 Special Forces Operatives, excluding me”
“All at once?”
“That would be favorable”
“Sorry, no can do. Foutunatley, our MH-47G Chinook just came back nearly 5 days ago after a re-supply mission to the Aurora Australis”
“Good. When can it be operational?”
“Any time you wish”
“Good. I’ll let them rest here for a couple of days. Then we take off.”
“I see,” Jero’s mood turned sullen.
“You probably won’t survive, will you?”
“No probably not” “Well, we have a LOT to catch up on, don’t we?”
“Yes. Well where do we start?”
“How about the gossip?” They both laughed as they walked into the operations building.
Chapter 7: 13th July, 2013
Squadron Leader Patrick Marchetta leaned against the outside wall of a hangar, lighting a cigarette. He was extremely traumatised by the Zombie attack on the air field, and found that cigarettes helped calm him. As he blew out the smoke, he looked up at the sky, wondering if there will be an end to this war, or outbreak or whatever the hell officials called it. He had lost his wife and his family to this disease, just the thought made his blood boil. Mother, Father, My Christina, I will try my best to see you avenged he thought to himself as he gazed at the unchanged night sky. Then he heard footsteps to his right. He dropped his cigarette and whipped around, bringing his sidearm to bear. Then he saw them, 5 infected, moaning and shambling their way towards him. He began to fire at the infected, his anger rising, but to no avail. Soon they were on top of him, ripping him apart. He let out a scream.
Major Luther Patricks, or Jawa, was the first, along with about 15 pilots inside the hangar, to hear the gunshots, the moaning and the scream. "Shut the Doors! Lock 'em!" yelled Jawa as pilots scrambled to carry out the orders. Meanwhile, Jawa went for his radio strapped to his waist and went to channel 5, the channel all radios were to be tuned to.
+This is Jawa, repeat, this is Jawa. Infected have found the airfield, repeat, Infected have found the airfield! All personnel resort to defensive protocol 5, repeat defensive protocol 5! +. He placed his radio back on his belt and brought his REC-7 to a firing position, scanning the hangar for any breaches. The north-eastern door broke in, with infected pouring in. Pilots, having already secured the other doors, raced to cover; behind fuel tanks, on elevated walkways, behind any one of the 3 Blackhawks that occupied the hangar. Some even just stood there and fired into the horde. Jawa ran to the defensive line. "Hey! Aim for the head! Shooting anywhere else will get you nowhere!" screamed Jawa over the bangs of the pistols. He brought his REC-7 to bear on horde as the order was shouted again by a few pilots. He began to fire at the heads. Some zombies began to drop with bullet-holes in their heads from the 9mm bullets fired by the pistols, other's heads exploded as they were picked off by Jawa. Yet still more infected poured through.
"Kill yourselves if you are overrun! Don't let these fucking bastards eat you alive!" was the final order of Jawa. It was to be another half-hour of slaughter until the hangar fell silent, Jawa and the pilots dead, overwhelmed by the sheer number of Zombies. Elsewhere around the airfield, there was constant gunfire as the airfield became a battle ground.
Singh woke from his slumber in the second barracks to the sound of gunfire and klaxons. He saw that his room-mates, Andrew, Paul and an English Scientist called Gerald, were wide awake, loading firearms and checking they were in working order. Singh jumped out of bed and began to do the same. It was silence for a few minutes before Gerald walked to the door, put his hand on the knob and said to the others "Let's Go". The four Scientists walked cautiously down the hallway in silence, checking to make sure no Zombies were inside. In fact, the barracks was deserted. As they made their way outside, it was like a war-zone. Black Hawks circled around the base, sharpshooters inside them picking off Zombies, Zombies shambled around the base, moaning. There was a moaning to the left. The four whipped around and saw 10 shambling towards them. "Aim for the head" saiduttered Gerald, in a surprisingly calm tone, like he was suppressing his anger. Singh brought his P-90 to bear, dispatching four before his team took out the rest. "What do we do?" questioned Singh
"We make for the first barracks, try and see if anyone survived" answered Gerald
"Then?" saidasked a slightly demoralised Paul
"Make our way to HQ, blasting any of those fuckers that try to mess with us" answered Gerald again. Singh, Andrew and Paul looked at each other with surprise. This is Gerald? All three of them thought as they walked with Gerald to first barracks.
Chapter 8: 13th July, 2013
They finally made their way to first barracks. A couple of Zombies, about 5 or 6 were dispatched on the journey. The four went in and searched, surprisingly or not, it was empty. "Right, we go to HQ" ordered Gerald as he signalled his team to follow as he made a run for HQ. "Oh, jeez" breathed Andrew as the three tried to keep up, only stopping to "blast", as Gerald put it, the occasional Zombie which, by the end of the break for HQ, ended being a fair chunk of the horde.
As they arrived at HQ, they saw that zombies were coming from the sides and behind, many dropping as 9mms and REC-7s blasted from the fortified gun points of the building. "Hey! you guys! Quickly!" came from the opened door as 2nd Lieutenant James O'Reily, or Jango, beckoned them to come in. The four sprinted to the opening, blasting inside and panting as Jango locked the door. "Jango, what's going on?" panted Gerald.
"A massive horde found the airfield, and, as you know, is attacking it. We've lost 20 pilots, Boba," Jango flinched when he mentioned Boba, his younger brother, Private Matthew O'Reily, "Jawa, Grevious, Maul and Windu, and we still haven't accounted for Jabba, Lando, Ackbar, Tarkin or Dooku".
"Shit" was all Gerald could utter.
"On the positive side", Jango continued, "You four were the last Scientists here"
"Which means?" breathed Singh
"All 10 of you have been accounted for and are safe"
"Oh thank God" sighed Singh. Alena is safe thought Singh as relief washed over him.
"Anything else?" asked Paul
"Yeah, only me Jero, Vader, Rancor, Yoda, Solo, Grevious, Bail, Jar-Jar and Jero's lieutenants are holed up here. Other elements are out in other parts of the airfield. Vader is co-ordinating them so that we can launch a counter-offensive".
"I see" saidbreathed Paul.
+Jango, this is Vader. I have decided the best course of action is that we have to break cover and relieve the other people trapped around the base+ came over Jango’s radio.
+You sure? What about the scientists? +
+That’s the first part of the plan. We need to escort them to the lead transport and see that they are safely inside, and then we move out and fight back+. There was silence.
+Right, got that, when do we move? +
+In 5+
+Got it+. Jango put his radio back. He looked back up at the four, who were staring back at him, looking very concerned. “Okay, you guys stay here, I’ve got to get back to defending the place” ordered Jango as he went to the nearest gun point.
“So, we just wait here?” asked Singh.
“Yes, Singh” replied Gerald.
Chapter 9: 13th, July 2013
In a few moments, the defenders of HQ were to break cover and launch a rescue operation to try and take back the airfield. Vader was at the front, bending down slightly, holding his SiG Sauer, Jero and his lieutenants behind him, each holding their 9mm. Next were the Scientists, followed by Rancor, Solo, Yoda, Grievous, and Jar-Jar, forming the rearguard. “Okay, when we get out there, be prepared for ANYTHING. We make for the lead Transport, drop the Scientists off in there, then we move out and rescue those men” Ordered Vader.
“Got it”
“Right”
“Yep” came from several people. Singh, along with the rest of the group, bended down slightly, holding his P-90 at-the-ready.
“Singh” Singh turned around to Alena, who was looking at him with concern.
“Yeah?” replied Singh.
“If we don’t survive....”
“Don’t be silly, we WILL survive this, mankind depends on it”
“Please stop being so Gung-Ho”
“Okay, sorry”
“Look if we don’t survive, I want to give you something”
“What?”. Alena leant forward and kissed Singh. Whoa! What?!?! Thought Singh. The kiss lasted a few moments before Alena pulled away, and began looking at his surprised face, like she was meaning to do that for a long time. “Okay! GO! GO! GO!” yelled Vader as he opened the door and rushed off into the night, closely followed by the others.
Chapter 10: 13th July 2013
“Hostiles to the left!” yelled Rancor as he fired three shots off, downing three Zombies that had come around the right of HQ.
“In front!” yelled Jero as Amzi let off two shots, two headless Zombies dropping, dead.
“Keep mobile! We have the advantage of speed!” yelled Amzi as Jango threw a grenade into a pack of three dozen Zombies approaching from the right. Blood and limbs flew everywhere; zombies fell over from the blast, only to get back up again. The immediate area was painted a brownish-red. “Help Me!” yelled Jango as he began picking off survivors. Rancor and Solo supported Jango in mopping up.
“How long ‘till we get there?” yelled a slightly shell-shocked Singh.
“I can see it! Only a few moments now!” yelled Amzi as he whipped to his right, dropping five Zombies in quick succession. The lead transport loomed like a dark-shadow. Once they reached it, Vader popped the door. “Okay! Get in! Get in! Go! Go! Go!” ordered Amzi as, one-by-one, the Scientists scrambled into the Transport.
Singh was last in, as he scrambled up, Vader grabbed his leg.
He whipped around.
“Singh,” said Vader, looking“Singh, up at him “Youyou are the only one with military experience, let alone training in the Garud Commando Force. If Zombies assault this vehicle, I expect you to keep them alive. You know what happens if you guys die. Many deaths would have been in vain, and Mankind won’t have another light of hope like what we have for who-knows-how-long?”
“Right, got it.” Answered Singh, all the while thinking My god! So that’s why Vader was chosen. Not because of his progidical military skill, but because he has an unbreakable will and a power in his words that will place hope in even the most demoralised army's hearts.
Then Singh registered another thing Vader said. What? How did he know that? I didn’t say that to anyone! Not even my family knows, or knew. Singh then looked down to see the door had closed and the men were gone, to start part two. How long was I there? Thought Singh, then proceeded to climb up into the main part of the transport, where the rest of the Scientists were, making themselves comfortable and those with guns keeping them close-at-hand.
“What took you so long?” questioned Andrew as the other Scientists looked at Singh.
“Uh, nothing, Vader just wanted to wish me, US, good luck” replied Singh.
“Ah” saidexclaimed Andrew as him and the others went back to doing whatever it was they were. Singh looked around at the Scientists, each of them looking very concerned; Singh could see it in their eyes, although they did mask it very well. He smiled and went to the driver compartment, sat in the driver’s seat, brought the P-90 to his chest, leaned back in the seat and watched.
Waited.
“Whatcha waiting for, Cee-dog?” Singh turned his head around and saw Sean walk in, followed by Alena.
“Hey Sean,” saidwelcomed Singh as he and Sean did their handshake, a fairly elaborate one. “Hey Alena” said Singh as Alena sat in the passenger’s seat whilst Sean found a portable chair and moved it behind the two and sat down.
“So, as I said, what are you waiting for?” asked Sean.
“Those things” replied Singh, returning to looking outside.
“Ah come on, it’s not like they saw us” said Sean.
“Probably not. Oh yeah, what are you guys doing here?” asked Singh
“Us?” said Alena “we thought you could use some company”.
“Ah. Thanks guys.”
“Think nothing of it.”
“Nah, its cool Cee-dog.” Singh looked around and saw them both smiling at him. Singh smiled, and thought with friends like these, who needs enemies?
