| Scenario setup Background data: 1 year post Z-day/estimated 75% of population is dead or dead-ish, remainder scattered Colony is remainder of 15K person town (mid-sized, rural) with good road access/ current pop: 2500 RECON MISSION #1138 3 man team for 72 hrs and max 250 radius/explore area and report back Protocol: report back every 6 hrs/if nothing heard or if mission not return in expected window, rescue operations will begin search at last known position/will expect radio reports on pre-designated freq @midnight, 0600, 1200 & 1800 If missing after nightfall, will begin search at first light along the 3 pre-designated return routes. After documenting, mapping and logging all pertinent data up to mission hour 70 on the return leg, #1138 comes across a small group of survivors. The 4 survivors are malnourished and request rescue. The team leader decides to bring them back to the colony along with some items. Due to the extra weight, they run out of fuel approximately 40 miles from the colony. With darkness approaching, they attempt radio contact and set out on foot. About 5 miles later, they encounter a pack of zombies. The team and 1 of the survivors find shelter and settle in for the night. Colony HQ: With #1138 not returning as expected and one faint transmission received indicating basic position, a decision is made to send search parties at first light. Since there are other recon missions ongoing and limited resources, 3 platoon size (~40) teams are prepared. 0530: 3 rescue teams (RT) are dispatched along the 3 pre-planned return routes 0600: one RT picks up faint radio transmission indicating team status and general location Slide 1 RT finds objective, deploys vehicles along road, astride ditch. RT leader establishes radio contact w/#1138, gets threat assessment, ID's points of terrain features, fields of fire to squad leaders/team members, line of advance and clearance to begin operation. SQ 1 forms on right flank to immediate tree line SQ 2 forms in center aligning to objective bldg SQ 3 forms on 2's left flank to cover other side of objective SQ 4 provides vehicle security and rear cover to all Slide 2 Once in position, RT leader calls on SQ leads weapons free, select targets and engage. Fields of fire are depicted as the dashed lines: SQ 1 had from corner of Obj to tree line, SQ 2 has front of obj, SQ 3 has from corner to opposite tree line Slide 3 Each RT member of SQ 1-3 need only fire 3-4 rounds in opening salvo to reduce Z threat sufficient to approach objective Slide 4: With the way cleared, #1138 +1 exfil bldg protected by shotgun group SQ 2 and all SQs withdraw to central rally point at center vehicle ___________________________________________________________________________________________- RECON RESCUE (twist on scenario via Ironhand) What if evac was time critical and the only unit able to respond WASN'T a full up testosterone charged HOOAH platoon but just another Recon element? Same place, same backstory. #1138 makes contact with #1010, vectors them in and provides situation report (SITREP). #1010 team lead (w/rifle) sizes up SITREP and positions himself and his #2 (w/shotgun) to the right of the South tree line in view of OBJ and vehicle. Driver does not leave vehicle. Once in position, #1010 opens fire and driver blows horn to attract all Zeds toward tree line & #1010 slide 1 slide 2 Targets of opportunity are taken until enough Zeds are heading away from OBJ slide 3 To avoid being outflanked, #1010 uses natural obstacle to keep safe distance and Zed attention; moves along tree line; slide 4 #1010 re-emerges on opposite side of tree line; engages zeds in kill zone #1138 engages immediate threat zed and proceed directly to #1010 vehicle with #1010 providing covering fire notes Recon #1010 on previous mission _________________________________________________________________________- Background Narrative This little town just West of Nowhere can be a useful case study on setting up defenses post Z-day. In the likelihood that small towns like this will not be affected in the first wave of infection (if the pattern of spread coincides with larger cites of high traffic volume in air (International airports), sea (large ports for cargo & passenger) and land. Given that incubation of the first patients takes ~ 72 hrs to spread and perhaps a week for outbreaks to be identified on both coasts and larger central cities, that could be sufficient warning for small-mid sized areas to take the proper steps for long term survival. This is how I would do it and my recommendations. Setting Olustee, OK is a very small community tucked away from most traffic with abundant farmland and few terrain features of note other than the river on the East. Limited resources Limited population (~800, about 50% can be considered eligible for defense, ~25% combat capability) yielding a possible effective force of ~250 The key for success would be a recognition of the problem by the entire town and firm commitment to enact this strategy. Picture 1 narrative With limited resources, the creation of defense zones and min man outposts would be absolutely critical for awareness and early warning. As a farming community, heavy equipment (and derelict) would be available to block junctures or act as barriers. Also, it would take significant time to muster the full force of the town beyond the ~100 or so dedicated to defense on a regular basis. Picture 2 Narrative Pic 3? explanation notes | |

Ironhand had an interesting alternative to my original tactic. I have posted that below the original (& Possumblasters' take)
I've also started another unrelated one below that; under construction |

Helluva stategy man. I like that it involves drawing off zeds to open a window instead of having to slog through God knows how many z's on the south end of the objective. In this case, I'd probably attach a designated sharpshooter to each recon element, 'cause like you said, the only force able to respond to an unexpected shift in zeds might be a just a recon team. That way, recon elements can leapfrog to and from the objective, and still move under dedicated sniper cover.

I'm going to further explain some aspects of distance communications that is mentioned in this page.
I'm exploring multiple alternatives to provide the best possible listing of ways for survivors to enable contact. One of these is relay stations in a series to extend range as well as forward operating locations (FOL) a certain distance from the colony HQ. |
