Taurus Judge MagnumModel: Taurus Judge
An interesting revolver from Taurus, named in 2006 after word that judges in Miami were purchasing it for self-defense in the courtrooms, the Taurus Judge is a .45 Colt revolver that can also load and fire .410 bore shotgun shells. Because of the rifled barrel, the Judge is classified and can be purchased as a handgun rather than a short-barreled shotgun.

What makes the Judge unique is that it does not require any swapping of the cylinder to load shells or cartridges, allowing for the user to carry shot for killing pests and bullets for self-defense. The Raging Judge variant can also load the powerful .454 Casull round, giving three ammo choices for one gun with no adjustment necessary. The Taurus Judge Magnum Edition (pictured above) can load 3 inch shells.

Where to find

With a price running around $400, the Judge isn't an especially expensive revolver for such an oddity among weapons.

Complexity

In terms of reliability and strength, the Judge is as good as any revolver: jams are unheard of, allowing you to move to the next round with a simple pull of the trigger, and the heavy frame means it can take a beating. Unfortunately, accuracy and power is where the Judge falls flat. The shallow rifling prevents the shot from spreading excessively, but also provides less stabilization to the bullet. A Judge can barely keep all bullets on a human-sized target at 25 yards, a range pocket pistols could easily maintain accuracy at. Even with the shallow rifling, 4 buckshot pellets will find themselves spread over almost two square feet at the same distance, with rather poor penetration as well. The Judge is only meant for very short ranges.

Loading

Condition One, or "Locked and Cocked." Chamber loaded, magazine full, hammer cocked and safety applied.

Cannot be done due to lack of safety.
Condition Two. Chamber loaded, magazine full, hammer down, safety off.

  1. Point the weapon in a safe direction. Critical step in case it accidentally discharges!
  2. Push the cylinder catch and push the cylinder to the left with your fingers from the right side.
  3. Take the appropriate number of shells or cartridges and push them all the way into the chambers in the cylinder.
  4. Push the cylinder shut.

Condition Three. Chamber empty, magazine full, hammer down, safety off.
This is note a "true" Condition Three, but works essentially the same.
  1. Point the weapon in a safe direction. Critical step in case it accidentally discharges!
  2. Push the cylinder catch and push the cylinder to the left with your fingers from the right side.
  3. Take the appropriate number of shells or cartridges and push them all the way into the chambers in the cylinder, leaving one chamber empty.
  4. Rotate the cylinder so that the empty chamber is at the top and push it closed, leaving the hammer resting on an empty chamber.
