If you wish to avoid The Panic, be like me. I am paranoid, conspiracy theorising, and always expecting the worst. This attitude will help, because I will keep informed about what might be going on that might cause a Panic if everyone knew about it and thought it was true. I would begin preparations early.
Just a survival note: Better crazy than sorry.

Okay, first let me say no offense intended as the site says noone is an expert and this is just my opinion on the subject.
Everything in The Panic is all very well researched and thoughtful, but I am not sure it's totally accurate for one reason, the zombie virus in all incarnations that I have seen has had a nearly 100% infection rate, which i believe would change the dynamic of the panic scenario completely. depending on the start place and time of the infection I believe it might spread so fast and completely that communication about the infection might not reach the areas in time. So the wal-mart scenario might not be so nonviable if you are located near the epicenter.

I would love some suggestions for us all as to what to do if and when supplies are either low or completely gone during the mass panic stage of events. It doesn't matter the reason why (could be the B.O.L. or B.I.L (bug in location) got raided, burned down, blown up, structural failure (for whatever reason). I would like this so as NOT ONLY to be prepared in advance (which I am a little bit) but also to know what to do if one of us ever finds ourselves in this situation and is FORCED to go out to look for supplies/weapons/etc. in order to survive.
These are the items you are restricted to: 1) 1 - Kabar knife 7 inch blade 2) 1 - 2 foot wrecking bar (crowbar) 3) 60 matches 4) 1 BiC lighter 5) 1 pair leather gloves 6) 1 small flashlight (no way you should use it as a weapon) 7) 1 magic striker (fire starting tool, good for 20,000 strikes) 8) 1 pocket multi-tool (not quite a leatherman but somewhat similar) These are all the items you can use and ONLY these. Help me to make a plan of action for this WORST CASE SCENARIO! I need the plan to be centered around living in a suburban neighborhood in a big city. NOTE: Attempting to obtain supplies in the middle of the mass panic should be avoided at any cost! This reference is intended STRICTLY as a LAST RESORT and not as a reference for "mall ninja's" Try as we may, some of us may not be able to be fully prepared. I myself would NOT be if the z-poc happened tomorrow.

I live in Westchester county in NY and we were just hit with a "freak" snow storm in October that left HUNDREDS of thousands of homes without power over the course of an evening!! That was a Thursday, by Sunday I had to drive across the county and literally every other town was still without power and the gas stations that DID have power all had lines in double digit quantities and some had lines more than 20 cars long... Many had already run out and were closed because of the overflow of patrons from the surrounding towns coming to purchase fuel for generators to power their homes. The day of the storm many grocery stores had closed their produce, meat and frozen food departments becuase there was no power and were only accepting cash.

So what you're trying to say is that Wal-Mart will be empty? My moms friend works there and she says there is ten times as much food and supplies in the warehouse behind the store. Even if the stores miraculasly were cleaned out I'd just look for Wal-Mart semis as I traveled the open road.

Wanted to share this example of communication system breakdown:
http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2011301260017 Ok, granted, Cellcom is not the largest cellular provider in the nation. But they run on AT&T's network. This is what happened in the aftermath of a sporting event. Even though a Green Bay NFC win is not just another sporting event. Imagine what would happen in the aftermath of a zombie outbreak. You could have everyone in the nation was texting and calling as if their lives depended on it.

Panic can also be used to one's advantage.
unfortunately for the people congregating in large groups, there will be little to no controll. Never go to large stores in the very first stages. Never take highways or freeways as a method of transportation, you will be gridlocked. - use the rail lines! who will be driving where trains normally go??? not many. Where do traintracks take you?? lots of places. You can use the chaos to go to other places such as buddies houses/ rondevous points, to leave the city by foot or car/ railway line. or fortify your house/ apartment. - I used to think apartments were death traps in a zombie outbreak, thinking if any got in the stairwell, they could spread through the building. If you keep proper security of the building, it'll stand better than many "fortresses". Plus theres enough people where teamwork is possible.

its come...the panic time is as valueable as survivng. when the panic comes you are gonna need to get the hell out of your home office etc. Few people will be ready. Just reading this survival guide is not enough. Sure you have valuable information that you would have previously not had and will give you an advantage over other people but what counts is what you physically do...
picture this... a 18 your old reads all this side and knows everything about survival, and they may have even made their BOB . They have an idea on a few places they could go. Now compare this to a father who has never read anything about survivng zombies. you may think hes got no chance but he might have a better chance of survival than the 18 yr old. He knows that they will attack him so he needs to protect his family and barricade his home..the chances are he wont survive either because hes left it too late..... so my point is dont just read this but do nothing about it....when your faced with a zombie its not the information on how to kill them but the shotgun you bought 2 years ago if this would happen. please comment as i am only 16 and i have not done much myself and i dont know as much as others so i'm probably wrong to some of you

While I completely agree with everything on here, IF and that's a big if, the zombies turn fast there will be a lot more gas than you think, however if you can provide numbers that dispute this claim, I will concede.
Gas will go bed there is no question about it but some convenience store owners will fight (with or without weapons) for their store. the Rodney King riots and the Korean shop owners come to mind. critisim and pointing out any holes that are there is welcome. Johnny3000

I could use some help in researching the next part of this article.
I need to know several things about your local store. *How big it is, in sqaure feet. You can use Google Earth to measure length x width. *How high they stack things. Don't go nuts on this. Rough numbers is fine. *How much of the floorspace is actually devoted to food. Fresh, frozen, dry goods, etc. *How much of the warehouse (if they have one) is used to store food. If I can get five or so complete sets of data I will be able to guess at an average number for all stores.

all of this makes complete and total sense. i have a tangible survival plan (also a memorized one) that includes: modifying a vehicle (or 8) and rolling out to either rural areas or north (the mountains, Canada etc.)
along the way gathering every single bit of supplies possible (guns, food, tools, books, building stuff, ammunition, etc.) in decent quantities at all locations hit along the way (FUCK WAL-MART)
