tokarev pistolModel: Tokarev TT series
The Tokarev is practically ancient compared to many handguns you'll see, but that's not surprising considering that most Tokarevs are surplus weapons. The TT handgun series is a Soviet pistol designed to replace the Nagant M1895 that had been used since the 19th century. While it never fully replaced the Nagant until after World War II, the TT proved itself to be a very rugged handgun in the brutal Russian climate.

The TT30 is the original handgun, with the TT33 being the most common and a simplification of the design; the TT33 has changes to the locking lugs, made the backstrap non-removable, and made minor changes to the barrel, disconnector, trigger, and frame. The Type 54 is the more common Chinese variant, with the Tokarev Model 213 being a commercial variant of the Type 54 chambered in 9x19mm Parabellum. The Tokagypt 58 is an export version designed for Egypt, common in the Egyptian Police. The Yugoslavian variant, the M57, has a 9-round magazine, longer grip, and frame safety similar to the Chinese Type 54

While the TT33 externally resembles the FN Browning Model 1903, it uses a simplified short recoil operation similar to the 1911.

Where to find

While the Tokarev is most common in Europe (especially the old Soviet Bloc), the TT33 is becoming more common on the surplus market in the United States due to its cheap ammo and reputation as a very reliable handgun. Romanian copies run around $200, with Polish ones at about $300-400. Russian handguns are the most expensive at $600+. Chinese copies are the most common in the United States, running at $200-300.

Complexity

The TT33 is one of the most rugged, reliable handguns one can find. While a bit large for a concealed carry piece, the simple design and manufacture as a Soviet weapon (famous for their tough build) makes it exceptionally reliable in all weathers. The magazine feed lips are even machined directly into the receiver, allowing for slightly distorted/damaged mags to be used.

Controls

  • Safety: The Soviet-produced weapons do NOT have a safety, but can have the hammer set on half-****. The Chinese Tokarev Model 213 has a safety on the left side, below the rear of the slide; push back for FIRE, forward for SAFE.
  • Magazine release: Located behind the trigger on the left side.
  • Slide catch: Located below the slide on the left side.

There may be threads on this and if there are, sorry, but what I want to find out is is there any quality differences between the Chinese version and the Russian version? I was at the gun show here and I was really interested in a Tokarev that one guy had and it was the Chinese version, but it was almost $100 more than a Russian Tokarev that is on a website I sometimes check-out

Maybe this Chinese one was in a little better condition or maybe is he over-pricing it?

Also can you get larger grips for cheap for it? These were uncomfortable because they were so small, I also noticed the grip angle Toxic was talking about, but I'm sure I'll be able to get used to it.

Any input would be greatly appreciated
