Toxic_Shock's Bug-Out RiflecaseThis is a featured page

I made this page because I believe I have a somewhat unique idea for a bug out bag. I used to have a huge duffle bag I loaded with stuff. It was heavy and unbearable, and didn’t even have a gun or ammo in it. I lost the true meaning of “bug out” somewhere along the line. So this is what I have done to get back to basics, and still have what I need.
NcStar Riflecase/Shooting Mat
This is a NcStar rifle case/shooting mat I have set up as my bug out bag. The case was designed to hold a rifle and fold out into a shooter’s mat. It comes with shoulder straps that allow it to be worn like a backpack. It is about 46 inches long, 12 inches wide and only couple inches deep. The unit has MOLLE webbing on the outside of the bag, which sealed the deal for me. This allowed me to attach an assortment of bags and pouches to the bag for further storage.

With the gun removed and the pouches taken off, it can serve as a sleeping mat. However, carrying the pack with the rifle removed causes the bag to sag and loose its shape. I added 2 wooden dowels to act as a frame and help remedy this. Maybe they can be used as tent poles or something too. I winterized the bag by adding an extra Swiss sleeping bag liner and a dozen or so heat packets.

Yeah, I know it looks a bit silly. But by packing the long gun inside the bug out bag itself, my hands will be freed up for any other activities my hands will be needed for during the bug out process. Also, with this set up, I can carry a long gun without the attention that goes with carrying a long gun in plain sight. The pouches and bags are detachable, and are compatible with my Bulgarian web harness. Specifically, the large camo bag on top is actually an East German Daypack. It can be worn as a backpack if I desire to leave the large case at camp or have to ditch it. I am unsure of the weight, but without the rifle, I’m guessing 20 pounds.

Ideally, I will be taking a lot more with me if I have to leave my apartment. If time is very limited and/or I can’t take my truck, the bug-out bag will be the only thing that goes with me, besides what clothing and gear are on my person, which can be viewed in the load-out section.

toxic_shock Replacing the rifle in my bug out bag with....? (page: 1 2 3 4 5) 94 Oct 19 2011, 3:52 PM EDT by 2WheeledSpeed

Most of you know I keep a full sized rifle in my bug out bag. For a few reasons, I have decided to sell my bastardized SKS I keep in the bag. I want to replace it with a more combat friendly rifle and I am looking for input.

I want a center-fire rifle that has detachable mags, is less than 45 inches long, and is reliable under poor conditions. The rifle must cost less than $700, and ammo and extra mags must be of average to low price. I have not decided if I will mount an optic to it or not, but I would like that option.

By now its obvious that I am looking at an AK variant with chrome lined bore. But if its going to be an AK, which variant? And if not an AK, what should it be?

I don't kow if you are like catholic or something, but why do you pack this? In a bug out bag that is supposed to be lightweight???? I don't see the "usefulness" of this, and you could trransfer the telephone numbers on a normal piece of paper and laminate the paper so it becomes water-resistant.
