Undead survival school
In this page we will be going through not weapons, but survival tactics. (thanks to max brooks for thinking of such great advice, locations, tactics and everything else you'd need to know)
To many people have been unprepared and have made the wrong choices in the places they choose to take refuge and shelter, which is what compromises most of the zombie threat.
Subject one, buildings(non-mobile, short term, long term, fortress type shelter)
The school.
The modern school today has barring around all of it's entrances, and depending on the school high impact steel mesh on the windows to provide protection from Vandals, canteens and water fountains provide food and water, considering you get there quickly enough and the water pressure is still up, and the canteen hasn't been raided. Schools could be converted into great fortress able to take 100's of zombies, although the gates and steel mesh windows will look awfully attractive to human passers by, and they'll want to take your place, or move in with you, this will cause trouble and attract alot of zombie attention. remember that any fortress that hasn't originally been designed for zombie defense can and will be destroyed, or destroy the people living inside it. all schools are in urban and suburban areas, schools do not have ammunition, suitable weapons, or a long term stock of supplies once you're surround by the undead you're imprisoned and they're is no sure way to get to the other side of the horde. schools could provide medium term shelter, if not seen you should be able to go about your business in there for a couple months, but you're bound to be found out sooner or later, by humans or zombies, and where a school is located you could easily access more suitable shelter near by. the school is good for staying put for a while, healing wounds that disadvantage you physically and require a week of rest. remember though no one man can hold an entire fort, bring your comrades with you and have them look after wounded, and get out of there as fast as you can.
The home.
Part one, single story.
Most people live in single-story houses, and chances are that your house will be your first defensive location against the enemy. your average home has enough food to last a week or 2 weeks at most, you know your home and no one else does, giving you the advantage in defense. you will naturally know what areas to barricade and have an extremely low chance of forgetting or missing something. remember though all fortresses will topple and your home should be used as a base to get your cool, calm down and asses the risk outside your safe area, plan an escape route and map locations that you can use in your advantage. someone who waits in there home before trying to get to a more defensible location will always have a better chance of surviving. this is because they avoid all the confusion and fear the undead attacking your town, after everyone's escaped and gotten what they need, they won't want to go outside of there safe place. the streets will be empty and zombies will be scattered through it, but zombies can't run after you to get something they need to survive, just get going and keep moving for as long as you have to, never stay in one place to long.
On the offensive, raiding a house can be useful to get some supplies and medicine, although extreme caution must be taken, if the house is uninhabited then there's a high chance of a zombie threat, it isn't your house and you don't know the floor plan making there alot of ambush opportunities, knock on doors, walls and cupboard's, zombies will react to this, begin moaning and try to get to you, you'll know where it is first, and begin preparing. remember though always bring at least one more person with the to watch your back whenever you're checking anything, even if it's in the open.
part two, two story.
The two story house has a major advantage over the single story, move all necessary items to the second floor destroy the staircase and you're safe for a very long time, this is because zombies do not posses the motor skills to climb. close all the windows and barricade them slightly, zombies can't reach windows on the second floor, and the time it would take them to pile up to them, you'll be gone. the reason of barricading the windows and doors is to slow them getting inside your house, they may not be able to reach you, but it will make escape much more difficult and when they here you tooling around upstairs they'll attract zombies to your location, second story houses should only be lived in for a month at most, get your bearings, map an escape route, and keep on moving. movement is key, always stay one step ahead.
The Warehouse.
warehouses can be located anywhere, near suburban towns, country towns, city's, and remote areas. warehouses focus on non-flammable building material, so they can easily contain fires, and be made at a low cost, rather than focusing on the comfort of the occupants. the construction material used, like corrugated iron and sheet metal is flexible and can stand up to strong winds and heavy rain. being attacked by a physical force though is another story, thin rolling metal doors can easily be dented, broken through, or forced open. all though almost every warehouse ever has a chain-link fence surrounding it to protect it from vandals. the majority of this structure is on one floor and used for storage of light to heavy equipment and supplys, all though it's possible to make a barricade around every part of the structure this barricade is unstable as it has a high centre of gravity, remember, zombies never get tired and stop at nothing to get at there target and enough people slamming themselves against a stack of crates will topple it. this complex is good as it offers medium defense and multiple escape points, all though it is only advised to seek refuge in remote and isolated warehouses as ones near busy industrial areas will most likely be infested with zombies and will get surrounded in a week at most if you're found out. warehouses near docks will be storing and exchanging shipping crates, these crates can be stacked up to form a massive defensive barrier, all though it's unlikely you'll have enough manpower in your group to accomplish such a task, as well as docks will almost always be infested due to the attraction of escaping the threat on land and going to sea, but if you fluke it then you'll have a long term fortress going.
The hospital.
Hospitals are used everywhere in the world to treat the immensely ill and wounded, they are the pinnacle of medical healing, and any curable ailment is seen to here. large hospitals stock food for thousands of patients and sometimes have hangars for helicopters and rescue planes when located near remote areas, thick fireproof doors and huge stocks of medical supplies would make someone think this is the ultimate location to build a fortress to defend him and his fellow comrades. the elevators can be shut down and the stares destroyed to make it impenetrable to the undead. but sadly though this is a dream that will never come true, the infected and wounded will be taken here in the opening days of an infection to be treated, the infected will turn and begin attacking everything in the hospital, the entire hospital will turn into a massive disaster and be entirely infected in hours, this makes it an impenetrable fortress to humans. clearing out a hospital would take massive effort, and be a long and arduous process. one should also avoid hospitals at all costs, as they will be radiating the undead due to the high concentration of people there when the outbreak started. avoid these at all costs, even if they seem small.
Any other structure plausibly safe should be first assessed for security, how many people do you think would be running to this place for shelter? how much can the entrances take before broken? what supplies can be found here? how long will i need to stay? and what are the advantages of choosing this structure? always remember to make sure nothing is in the structure by making loud noises and knocking on the doors and windows first, this will attract whatever's inside and it will react to you, if nothing reacts after you have checked externally check internally with even more caution, and always bring a team mate to watch your back, anywhere, even in the open or just checking something, or even going to do anything that requires you to go outside of a safe place that has no chance of containing any threat.
Subject two, vehicles (non-inhabitable, Inconvenient habitability, transport, land based).
The sedan/hatchback,fastback.
Sedans are used all around the world to travel short to long distances, the can hold luggage and shopping and are suitable for everyday life. allthough this wouldn't exactly be everyday life and it's suitability is completely dragged down. a sedan is a good option if no other is available, they take up much less fuel and go longer than SUV's, all though there storage capacity is greatly hindered, for one or two men the sedan is more than enough to travel to a safe place. but, as with all things, loads of questions have to be asked when choosing an appropriate vehicle, How many cylinders does the engine use to power the vehicle, a four cylinder will always be taken over an 8 or 6 cylinder, remember that you don't need power anymore, sedans can't hold there own off road anyway so why would you need to drag yourself up a pile of rocks if you're going to break down anyway, you need something that will get you the furthest distance from a threat and take up the least supplys. always go for a hatchback, or if they aren't available a fastback if they are based of an existing sedan they will used the same powertrain and can carry more cargo.
The ute.
Utes are designed to carry cargo, and can hold up to 5 passengers with twin cabs. allthough it is not advisable to go for fuel wasting american truck-chassis utes that serve almost no purpose against a flat tray commodore or falcon. the reason behind this is because a flat tray two seat ute can carry more of a load by not having a fixed barrier on the tray and will always have a better range being lighter, and can carry just as many passengers on the back safely with a removable barrier installed. utes based off of sedans will have a much better range than there 5 seater cousins, this is because there is no back seat, no roll-cage and no doors. a ute should always be chosen over a sedan or hatchback because of the increased load capacity and same passenger capacity. allthough the same rules apply, try to find a more fuel efficient model. allthough you may want to carry a large load, a good all-rounder would be a falcon XR6 or an old model V6 commodore, all though if you want maximum range and a good load capacity then a datsun 120Y based ute is ideal, datsun 12000 if you're American or European.
The SUV.
Most SUV's today are abominations of the original vehicles intended to serve there purpose, Fuel drinking accesory packed vehicles made for people who think that they need a four wheel drive to go across a street with leaves on it. but don't despair, for there are some SUV's who do there younger brothers proud. models, like the jeep wrangler, 72-89 toyota hilux, nissan mistral, nissan patrol, 90's Toyota 4runner, or suzuki samurai. Allthough SUV's have worse range than utes or sedans, dedicated and well made SUV's can survive through almost anything and have stock off road capability's, even if they are minimal they're more than enough to get to a relatively safe place, SUV's should be taken if the planned path is through bush, of a moderate range and if a large load need be carried, despite there fuel consumption they are excellent all-rounders and some, well built and intended for its purpose of course, compact SUV's have high capacity 4 cylinders that minimize fuel consumption and still serve there off road purpose just as well if not better then there larger brothers. the SUV should be taken over any of the latter vehicles if it is a suitable well-built model dedicated to it's purpose.
The dirt bike.
Dirt bikes have amazing off-road capability, are agile and fast, and use extremely small amount's of fuel compared to the car. all though there load capacity is pathetic compared to a four wheeled vehicle one man can ride with his backpack on and have the ability to travel anywhere he wants to, the dirt bike is the best choice when alone, allthough it provides little protection you should never be traveling near an area that infested anyway, allthough dirtbikes can't carry fuel on them, so you should be going through partly inhabited areas with cars the you can siphon fuel off of. you can't miss with any model 250CC and up, a choice between a 250 Honda and a 500 KTM is up to you and what you think you're comfortable with, keep in mind the more powerful the bike is the harder it is to kick-start, even 50's take a few try's to get going.
the ATV.
An ATV is much like a dirt bike, all though they're generally less fuel efficient this doesn't really matter considering they're still more fuel efficient than a car and have an increased load capacity enough so that you can mount enough cargo for one man on the rear and forget about wearing a pack while riding, which is extremely hard if you've ever tried it. an ATV is generally a better choice over a dirt bike.
The bus.
The bus is a large heavy fuel inefficient vehicle that would serve no purpose off road and is meant to transport people from one part of a city to another, in a zombie apocalypse situation the roads would most like be blocked and the bus could go no where, allthough you could store lots of supplys in it, it'd just prove useless because of the rate you'd use fuel up and the extremely limited off-road capability couldn't transport you far enough away from danger, and no, they're not indescructible armoured dreadnoughts, even buses can be tiped over by a couple people, discount this entirely.
Vehicles part 2 (habitable, non-inhabitable, inconveniently inhabitable, water based, trasport.)
The speedboat
Speedboats, as in boats used for watersport like malibu or other brands, would serve minimal transportation range and storge capacity, being made for rivers they would have no chance of surving at sea and wouldn't hold out more than say 25 kilometers, allthough getting through a zombie infested city using the river to get to the other side is extremely usefull, so only use these boats if the situation needs it.
i'll update it soon maybe, or maybe i'll never go back on and like forget about it and leave you with this much but probably not it's just i'm tired and sick so i don't feel like typing things but anyway.
