Upstate New York NY
--- view more defensible locations ---
City: Upstate New York in General. (Cities may include Roscoe, Walton, Monticello, Port Jervis, and Florida)
Neighborhood:
Building or Defensible Location: Farms, Large, sturdy houses on hills, and remote areas
Attributes: Huge open areas. If you're lucky enough to land it on a hill, with high power binoculars, and a high caliber sniper rifle, you will be able to spot and blast anything within a few miles.
Pros: Big open areas, and lesser population. Say the outbreak started in NYC, its a rough hundred miles from there to Upstate. Zombies wont shamble that far in the time a car could. Lesser population means, less zombies, and less people you'd have to take care of that joined your defense group. More space to fortify, and less looting, which is better for you in case of an outbreak, as you'd have more stores. Really small towns may actually be entirely walled in. Since you most likely will be using well water, and droughts are rather rare in this region, your water supply will be consistent.
Cons: If you live there, you might get word of the news a little late. Animals could reach your place, and infect you faster, and you might not have had time to mobilize. Less people in your group may mean you're lonelier, and may be outnumbered faster. Smaller businesses, which means you cant take much up for garbs, and being closer to people in such a small region may give you troubles putting a bullet into someones skull.
In the case of an outbreak, will you be allowing other survivors to join you here? Definitely. Large open areas can hold a few dozen people, which could be civil defenders, farmers, chances to repopulate the earth after the apocalypse, and since towns are small, you can fortify in them, after your main base gets overcrowded. People should be fully examined for bite marks, and what not. If there is a person, or a group with enough ammo for a small country's army, they are sure as hell getting in, regardless.
Passing time: Upstate NY, a great vacation spot for a few days, but for a few years? You will sure as hell lose your mind. Thats why no one lives there, its mostly vacation houses. Zombie killing may be fun, but say if they almost never come to your fortress? What then? Here are a few ideas.
- Loot for the hell of it. Yep, just steal any unnecessary crap, and burn it.
- Go joyriding on an ATV, with a friend on the back with an M4A14 Carbine. Drive by!!! If the zombies don't come to you, come to them! Outrun those bastards, and put .223 bullets in their heads at the same time. (Note: This idea may get you killed or infected. I take no responsibility if you adapt a passion for your best drinking buddies succulent brains.... Mmm, yes... mouth watering...)
- If government officials pass by, capture them, and torture them. Its their fault that the antidote wasn't found in time. Demand UH-80 Blackhawks, and a few hundred KGs of high power explosives. If not, call a few ex-Soviet mercs to drop a crate of bombs near you (with a parachute of course) for 5 US dollars.

First off one hundred miles north of NYC is NOT considered 'upstate'. I live in that 100 mile radius and MILLIONS of people live in this area - and further north. CIties like Newburgh, Poughkeepsie, Albany, White Plains...sound familiar? A Death Trap if you ask me, area is mildly defensible, but I would head NE towards NW CT border or Mass border. Area is hilly, close to mountainous and VERY defensible for a moderate length of time.
