UziModel: IMI Uzi
If the AK-47 is the most common image for "assault rifle" in the public mind, the Uzi is the most common image for "submachine gun". The Uzi was a revolutionary design, with a telescoping bolt (the front of the bolt wrapped around the rear of the barrel) and the magazine loaded into the pistol grip, making the weapon much shorter; the Uzi was inspired by the CZ Model 25, which had the same magazine location and telescoping bolt and has since been declared obsolete.

The Uzi was designed by Major Uziel "Uzi" Gal of the Israeli Defense Forces in 1948, first adopted by the special forces in 1954 and becoming general issue in 1956. The Uzi has remained in production in various forms and copies, with over 10 million made. From the 1960s to the 1980s, more Uzis were sold to militaries and police forces than any other submachine gun ever made.

Along with the classic Uzi, the Mini Uzi has a shorter barrel and frame and a higher rate of fire at 900 rpm and the Micro Uzi has a pistol-sized barrel and frame and a 1200 rpm rate of fire, creating a massive hail of bullets. The Uzi Pro is a modernized version introduced in 2010 with a large molded plastic handgrip, three picatinny rails, and the cocking handle moved to the left side. For civilians, the Uzi carbine has a 16-inch barrel and the Mini Uzi carbine has a 19.8-inch barrel, both semi-automatic only. The Uzi Pistol is a semi-automatic variant of the Micro Uzi with no folding stock. The M320 is an unlicensed Norinco copy of the Uzi carbine with a wooden thumbhole stock and several other changes, meant to avoid the US Assault Weapons Import Ban. The ERO is a Croatian copy almost exactly like the original Uzi

Where to find

With over 10 million sold, it's hard not to find an Uzi. The Uzi carbine and Uzi pistol are fairly popular in the United States, with the carbine running around $500.

Complexity

As a military weapon, the Uzi is designed to be a rugged, cheap weapon that can survive in the climate of the Middle East. When the gun is decocked, the ejection port is closed and prevents entry of dust and dirt into the mechanism.

Controls

  • Safety: Located on the left side of the gun above the pistol grip. Push to the right for SAFE, left for FIRE. The Uzi also has a grip safety in the rear of the pistol grip, and a firm grip is needed to depress it and allow the weapon to be fired, cocked, or the safety moved.
  • Magazine release: Located on the bottom of the pistol grip on the left side.
  • Cocking knob: Located on the top of the receiver.
