Here is an extensive list of transportation when that fateful day happens. Before the list, some things to consider. These vehicles are distinctly land-based. For air vehicles, see Aircraft. For sea vehicles, see Vessels. For military vechiles, see Military Vehicles

Purpose

Most vehicles will be used to get from point A to point B. Scouting should be reserved for the quieter, stealthier and less noticable human. While the thought of a heavily armed bus may appeal, if it's you and a few others stick wih a small truck or other vehicle. If it's a crew of you, your best friends, your woman and ten other skilled people, go with the bus. The reasoning behind this is gasoline. Using a bus that burns gas at 10 miles a gallon isn't worth the effort when transporting a small group. Also realize that you wouldn't want to go smashing through a city with a 1990 Honda Civic. The key importance is weighing out protection, stealth, and cargo capacity.

Protection

Most zombies aren't stronger than the human they were created from, but protection is still an issue. While 2 inches of steel plating isn't a must, a solid structure is necessary. Most vehicles can survive minor collisions, but ramming through a horde of zombies is just plain stupid. A car with a chassis that is higher up off the ground is ideal, with less of a tendency to be swarmed and have it's windows busted through. Also keep in mind that in the case of a flat tire, or worse, engine problems, that car needs to be strong enough to hold up against attacking zombies.

Stealth

Imagine you're on the highway, maybe after getting supplies with your survivor pals, in a loaded semi-truck with a trailer filled with guns, people, and other supplies. You, driving with your woman in your lap, your best pal riding shotgun, and a whole convoy of survivors firing fifty-cal turrets, grenades and other things going off, you neglect one thing. When the day is over, and you go to sleep, the hundreds of zombies that heard the noise will hunt you down with no trouble. Stealth is key. While you may be skilled and can pop a head shot off with one eye closed, and have a few dozen survivors who are just as skilled, in the long run you save supplies, guns, gas, and more importantly lives when not seen. A big convoy is only smart when traveling very long distances, as in city to city or between fortresses. When foraging for supplies and a vehicle is a must, go with a small quiet car, not a loud, destructive hummer.

Cargo Capacity

Now, seeing as you need to survive along with everyone else you've picked up, you need a place for all those guns, ammo, supplies, gasoline, food and people! A big storage space is essential, but how big is too big? This depends. If you have all sorts of rifles, pistols machine guns, knives machetes, explosives, turrets and 20,000 rounds, food, water, animals, you, your woman, two dozen others and Grandma Agnes, a semi trailers are ideal. However, don't go packing all that in a few trucks. A fifty caliber turret is near pointless unless against a horde, so don't pack that in the trunk unless you are IMMEDIATELY taking it back to a base or a leaving convoy. Remember, only what's necessary. If a semi trailer full of supplies is necessary, then so be it. Just don't take that trailer and put a box or two in the back. Use it to it's fullest potential, and if that isn't obtainable, you'd be best to leave it in a place you may remember or block off a road with it.

Outfitting

Equally as important as the vehicle itself is the outfit kit; What type of gear you carry, integrated or lying about, can seriously effect what areas you can access.

In no particular order, here are some of the best means of transportation during the zombie outbreaks.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Walking Over BridgeOn Foot: This is one of the best always-available ways to travel. Everyone except paralyzed people and babies can do it. It requires little energy and will outrun the normal stereotype zombie easily. This mode of transportation provides no cover and you can't run over zombies. Use this mode of transportation ONLY to get away in a cinch. The main advantage is that if you walk, you lose very little energy.

Attainability: Always to almost everyone
Maintenance: Normal for a human
Gas Mileage: Unlimited
Toughness: What kind of weapon do you have?
Fuel Type: Food and Water

Cadillac Escalade BMX Bike 20 Freestyle
Bicycle: These are also a readily available means of transportation on Z-Day. They have all the advantages of walking, but with a little more protection. The only fuel necessary is food and water for the rider. The only maintenance required is to keep the tires inflated. I strongly discourage trying to ride over a zombie or through a horde. These are best used for escape or scouting.

Attainability
: You should have one in your garage
Maintenance: Healthy rider and inflated wheels
Gas Mileage: Unlimited
Toughness: Low
Fuel Type: Man power

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Horse
Horse: A quiet means of escape or travel to safer and more secure areas. Can carry somewhat large amounts of equipment. No gas required except for vegetation and water, easy to find if not in an urban area. Horses are not for inexperienced riders, as the horse may become startled and throw the rider. A horse will not attract attention like a motor vehicle, but if zombies are encountered on a horse, the horse will not stand a chance in a fight and it would be best to continue riding away. Also, if the cause of zombies is trans-species, the horse may just become another zombie. In medieval days knights rode around breaking heads before Z day. Dressage was training just for wars.

Attainability: Rural citizens
Maintenance: Medium - High
Gas Mileage: Unlimited, but needs water and food.

Off-Road Motorcycles and Sport ATVs : O2008 YZ450F & 2008 Raptor 700Rff-Road Motorcycles and Sport ATVs are only really good for a fast exit or a scouting mission. The Sport ATV would be better if you wanted to mount a few spikes on the front and mow some zombies down; where as with the bike you get better maneuverability. However both are quite loud and unprotected, speed is your only protection.

Paggio MP3:
A sVehicles - Zombie Survival & Defense Wikicooter can come in handy when you need to travel quietly and efficiently over short distances. this perticular model also possesses
a third wheel, allowing for faster speeds, tighter turns, and overall good handling on many different surfaces, including wet, slippery streets. this scooter was made for city streets, but can be used on any smooth surface, like cement or pavement. it's fuel tank holds 3.2 gallons, where i am,
the gas is $4 a gallon so in total to to fill up the gas tank is 12 dollars and 80 cents, from my calculations. that can be a lifesaver at the pump. only problem is the range probably stinks, but thats about the only thing that stinks about it. it also has a top speed of 77 miles-an-hour.

BMW F 800 GS

BMW Darkar 650 Enduro BikeDual-Sport/Enduro Motorcycles:
These bikes are meant to go on long rides on the highway and also take on some of the toughest trails out there. They look like half street bike, and half dirt bike, because thats exactly what they are. They are heavier than a dirt bike (400lbs vs 200lbs) but can still get just about anywhere. I've seen these bikes tackle some of the worst terrain, crash 5 or 6 times, get left out in the rain for days, then start up and work fine. Enduro bikes are meant to be loaded up with with gear and many have saddle bag (side bag) mounting on them. With the ability to go anywhere (I truly mean that), carry around 40 lbs of gear on the sides, and sport 50 MPG, these bikes are made to for the solo zombie survivor.
Advantages: Won't get worn out by long rides on the road (unlike dirt-bike), some have 12v power plugs, 50 MPG, can go over any terrain
Disadvantages: Exposed, can't carry as much as a car, louder than a car, and if you hit something or crash, well you know the rest

Hummer H2 SUT:
UHummer H2 SUTseful for mowing down zombies, but you'd have to first put on armor plating on the Hummer and put link fencing on the windows so if you get caught in the middle of an army of zombies it won't be that easy for them to get in. Also on a side note, as stated in The Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks, not all Hummers are as rugged and tough as they are advertised, so know your vehicle before you choose this as your transportation. And, as is to be expected, gas is always a major concern with these vehicles. Make sure you stock up on gas before hand. Decent performance off road compared to other stock SUVs

Hummer H1:
Obvi2002 Hummer H1ous choice... This is the civilian hummer that sparked the craze for the gas-guzzlers in later years. This thing has been proven time and time again that it can stand up to whatever terrain it comes across. With less internal safety and comfort features of its later generations (airbags, and air conditioning come completely optional) it certainly has the external safety features that would rival the current military version (with locking doors). It also comes with roughly the same amount of cargo space. This thing still has that oh so wonderful crushing capabilities of any Hummer when it comes to zombies. Unfortunately this model has been suspended by General Motors so most likely you'll find these for sale by previous owner.

OOldsmobile (Or other 80s vehcile)ldsmobile or other 80s car is useful but still it has its cons. The good side with these vehicles is that they are fast and powerful and can be used for quick rescue of 1-3 people. The bad is that it cant carry much supplies / personnel, and they are not all that good off road. And it can drink lots of gas so you better be prepared for that part. Mostly it should be used for a rescue of one person or to scout the area. It can be also for delivering a package from somewhere to base like extra first-aid kits from hospital

Pickup Truck:
T2008 Dodge Ram 1500he Dodge Ram, Ford F-series, Toyota Tundra, Nissan Titan, etc are an easy choice for an apocalypse vehicle: rugged, easily modifiable, and built to last. These things are tough, but not invincible. Stock wheel and tire combinations offer little traction off road. A direct hit to the front end from a zombie body or an obstacle will damage the radiator and disable the truck. And as any modern vehicle goes, there are plenty of things to break. Ford F-150However, you can pretty much use them to move anything. Whether it is people, ammo, guns, supplies, or materials for building, this is a far better choice than a luxury SUV. Some seat 5 including the middle seat in the rear (only on some trucks) and then you can always pile people in the back. Another plus is of course, the ability to mount a weapon on the back. To sum it all up this is a great choice.

Ford Expedition EL:
This third generation Expedition is an extended-wheelbase version called the Expedition EL (for "Extended Length") in the United States and the Expedition Max in Canada. The Expedition EL is about 15.8 in longer than the standard Expedition for additional cargo space for those supplies your group depends on. Like most SUVs in the zombie outbreak, it can be fitted with a make-shift shooting platform on the roof. Need to rip open a barricade or tow your fellow survivors? This model of the Expedition can pull over 7,290 lbs. This vehicle is the only SUV in the Ford line to offer seating for seven. Of the stock luxury SUVs, this and the Chevy Suburban are possibly some of the best with decent off road performance, and decent toughness.

Recreational Vehicle (RV):
TRecreational Vehicle (RV)he Recreational Vehicles are those things you see parked in Wal-Mart lots those hot July days. They are basically 40 foot buses armed to the tip with every living comfort. While not an idealistic zombie killing machine it can provide very good cover (R/V's are extremely durable w/ thick walls and lockable doors). The RV is also very heavy, allowing the user to not have to worry about something flipping you over...unless it's your own doing. To bad however, the R/V is designed SOLELY for Road Use, with limited trail capability. The most you can do is ride out the apocalypse in the comfort of your RV. It has storage racks just about everywhere to carry stuff, so thats a bonus! It does have a bathroom, but you have to use tubes to knock the fecal matter into a sewer or your bus will smell like poop for 3 years or more. Also, they have very poor gas mileage (about 3 miles per gallon), so unless you have about 60 gallons of gas and enough weaponry, plus bulletproof windows, this isn't the best choice. The model above is about 1.5 million dollars. Other, smaller, car-attachment ones are much cheaper, but will do practically nothing against zombies.

Semi-Trailer Truck: A
SFreightliner Semi-Trailer Truck with box trailerSemi-Trailer Truck with tanker traileremi-Trailer Truck is great and it comes in very handy for moving large groups of people around, also great for getting 30 armed people to pour out the back of a truck to the center of the city to raid for supplies. Hard to navigate around corners, and not meant for city travel, you may have some trouble getting this around, but it will bring you in a main road to the center of town, and back again. Designed for long hauls, these things will allow you to carry a TON of provisions and ammo, and will take you long distances. Not a bad choice for hauling across the country, but not the best for
navigating around town. If you have one, you can also use it to barricade your fortress. Not the best for off road, but with the steel bumper and high grill, even one in stock form can take plenty of abuse. The truck in the lower picture is a fuel tanker, which will explode if not driving correctly or possibly if shot or set on fire. Remain careful with them.

School BusSchool Bus: Since they are only kept in "special" bus parking lots you can easily get a convoy of these going. They are reliable and good for moving large groups of people around. They can be used as barricades (Ever see The Road Warrior?) Other advantages are that you can weld sheet metal or anything you can find to it to re-enforce it.The off road performance is obviously limited due to their length and tires, and the fuel consumption is high, but if road travel is your idea, then one of these will carry plenty of people or supplies. These will definitely keep up the morale of children.

Garbage Truck:
AWaste Management Garbage Truck semi truck with armor. Same disadvantages as a semi or fire truck. Has better gas mileage than a semi as it was designed for stop-and-go driving. Easy to get, but beware, some run on natural gas for cleaner emissions, and this will be hard to come by and dangerous to transport. Good protection for whatever is in the back, not so much the driver, and the cleaning that will be necessary to get the back livable may take precious time. Very heavy and hard to turn. If you take out the garbage (most of it should be in bags) and put a gratuitous amount of soil in the pit, you have in essence a farm on wheels, open air for sunlight, and a faily large tank to hold water, soil, etc.

Ambulance:Ambulance
While lacking in off-road capabilities ambulances are rather tough vehicles. An advantage of the ambulance is that it has a lot of room for storage, and, when found, carries emergency medical supplies. As with all emergency vehicles it is rather tough, and surprisingly easy to maintain (the same may not be true with its equipment). In terms of gas mileage, this vehicle is a good bet for short range travel/ mobile insertion and extraction. With only slight modification, this would be the perfect centerpiece for your band of survivors. On a downside, the only semi-sure place to find one of these would be a hospital, and the keys are unlikely to be left with the vehicle. You cannot go very fast with these either, as they have a high center of balance. As we have all read, hospitals are some of the most dangerous areas during an outbreak due to the chaos and lack of maintenance that follows an outbreak, but this is the topic of another section.

Fire Engine:Fire Engine
Definitely not the first choice. The size of a bobtail diesel rig, only without the cargo capacity, its fuel consumption and noise matches a semi as well. Sirens and flashing lights would only attract more zombies if you turned them on. It is large and hard to turn, and not all that quick. But for the advantages, it is VERY tough and can carry lots of supplies if stripped of its fire fighting equipment, or leave the fire equipment in if you're worried about your base on fire. The water tanks could be used for extra fuel or drinking water. And for your injured buddies there's usually some medical equipment inside along with a radio for what ever reason you would need it for. And the only other advantage I can think of is that if its a ladder truck it would carry a ladder, never know when you'll need a ladder. Also, if you do have the chance to salvage one, the fire engine can be stripped down for it's components (such as the water pump), then rebuilt into a new platform (such as field repair/tow vehicle).

Cushman Carts:
TCushman Carthose ubiquitous groundskeepers carts are electrically powered, but have limited range and speed. However, they are highly useful in scouting, salvage and recovery, and working yards. These should be carried for supporting roles by those utilizing much heavier, difficult to maneuver platforms, such as box trucks and big rigs. Their off-road capabilities are not as good as feet, but most are designed to be able to handle limitedly rough terrain- Which is better than anything other than a dedicated off-road vehicle. Also, since they’re electric, they are almost absolutely silent so skin jobs can’t hear you coming, and use no fuel per se, allowing that to be better employed elsewhere.
