Veste Coburg Castle, BY, Germany
Jump to Defensible Locations
Country: Federal Republic GermanyRegion: Bavaria
City: just outside Coburg City Limits
Defensible Location: The Medieval Castle called Veste Coburg
Attributes:
It's a medieval castle on a hilltop overlooking the city of Coburg, the main gate is the only way in and out and Thanks to the massive, about 10 cm thick, wooden gate pretty easy to seal. The castle itself consists of an outer and an inner perimeter, those are pretty easy to defend against an unarmed Enemy like Zombies thanks to the still intact moat. The large amount of space supports even agriculture and the Buildings belonging to the Veste would provide Living space for more than 300 People. Only half a klick away is the Coburg Brandensteinsebene airfield, so if you got a Pilots License you'll be fine. Inside one of the Building is a medieval museum where you can find an amount of old melee weapons like swords, clubs, Halberds, maces and so on and things that chopped off Heads from living people hundreds of years ago, will also be able to chop off the heads of dead people nowadays.
The main problem is to get some nice guns for you to defend the perimeters, Coburg is located very near to the former Inner German border but since the Cold War has ended, there are no German Border Guard Barracks neither the little US Army Post located within the Coburg City Limits, anymore.
The only Way to obtain some guns would be raiding the Coburg Police Station (unlike in the US, German Policemen do not wear Kevlar very often ;D ) or raiding the hunting arms supplier downtown.
The other problem is, the Veste is just slightly outside the city limits of coburg with it's population of 40.000+ and if they have all turned into cannibalistic decomposed walkers, you'll be under siege pretty soon. So hope you were lucky during the raiding of the police station and the hunting arms supplier as well as looting the stores clean, because then you can sit it out, enjoy your real Coburger Rostbratwurst and play some Hollywood Squares with these moaning jerks.
Pros:
-large wall surrounding the whole area (hey it's a castle of course ^^)
-nice watch position
-museum with melee weapons
-many stores within 10 klicks to loot clean
-huge moat
-airstrip nearby (even a C-130 could land there)
-large amount of living space (could hold even 300+ survivors easily)
-there is even room for growing your own food
Cons:
-the nearby city will supply you with a large amount of Zack
-only limited arms supply
-in case of Zack breaking through, getting out would be very tough
-there is no disaster preparedness gear located in the castle
-hostile survivors could be also attracted to the castle
-the next serious military post is about 50 klicks south (US Army Warner Barracks Bamberg)

Summary:
I think the Veste could be a nice place to hide, if you got nowhere else to hide or if you are well prepared. I wouldn't recommend to hide there, if you got no guns and more than 80.000 rounds (loot a Bundeswehr post clean ;D), if you are alone or don't know if there will be anybody who will get you outta there.
If you wan't to survive there for a long term, be sure you brought some seeds and some construction materials with you. If you'll be careful, you can survive a long time siege in there, until maybe somebody gets you out or a cure is found.
In the case of an outbreak, will you be allowing other survivors to join you here?
Of course, as long as you got no signs of an infestation, i would let everyone in. In a large scale of thinking, i couldn't repopulate the world alone (even if i like these odds, having fun with all these hot survivor chicks ^^)
Post Scriptum:
I was not entirely right with my statement, that there is only one way in and out. Actually on a site visit today, I've seen there are some post-medieval doors in the castle wall, but because they're made of solid iron it won't downgrade the security of the Veste. In case of the worst case undead hordes are overrunning the perimeter (because some moron forgot to lock the main gate) and you have to retreat and abandon the place, you can these doors as an emergency exit.
By the way, I've seen a Mercedes Benz Sprinter up in the Castle and comparing the size with a M113 or a LAV-100 Commando, I would say you could easily take up some of these. (I was not sure because of the narrow main gate)
