Is your plan dependent on zombies in your home town, or anywhere?(For a local out break you should -of course- call local law enforcement. Using the word "zombie will get you laughed off the phone - just report that there are a group of assaliants attacking people and where. That takes care of the possibility you'll be arrested for shooting people that weren't confirmed dead. Then it's time to take up arms with people you know would keep their head. At the risk of sounding cold, a best friend who's a basket case is only going to lead to problems and potentially death/zombification. Use a weapon that you know how to use, a powerful but complicated weapon that you have to fumble with is useless. Hit the hordes as hard as you can. If the issue is world wide, discression is the better part of valor, and it's time to head for the hills - but you'll still want to organize a group of folks you can trust that have various and useful skills)
Will you be staying in your home or headed somewhere else? In the event that it's everywhere I'm getting out of Dodge, but it's advisable to stay within areas that you know the terrain to get away quickly - as well as not heavily populated. I actually was an Eagle Scout so I'd consider areas that I've camped and hiked. I'm comfortable in the mountains, and with the dramtic changes that can happen with landscape it would be difficult for a horde to build up - let alone surround you.
If you're heading out, how do you plan to get there? The best case scenario would be to drive. But since the best case scenario is rarely offered I could travel on foot/bike. The best motorized transport would be 4x4 vehicles, dirt bikes, 4 wheelers. Avoid gas guzzlers. Supplies can be carried on back if necessary, but more supplies can be taken with motorized vehicles. I could work with what was given.
Got anyone you want to take with you? My child, wife, and mother -family wise. My Mom's friend Julie b/c she's a amature radio operator. My friend steve and his family b/c his Dad is an ex-army ranger and they'd come well supplied and armed. I'd bring as many friends possible (that were level headed) to have extra hands and their talents as well.
How will you communicate with the outside world, or do you plan to go the hermit route? Juile's radio set could help keep tabs. Plus any CB radios/police scanners that we came across.
How are you planning to get food and water? I can live off the land, but I will supply myself first. When the morons of the world are looting electronics and drug stores (and it will happen, don't deny it) I will also be looting. Ammo, non-perishables, seed to plant, and medical supplies. Army surplus stores, and hunting outfitters would work well for clothing needs - cammo (for concealment) as well as tools and knives that were specially made for life in the field. The places I'd go would all have water sources ( I know of 3 right off the top of my head). And I know about boiling drinking water. I'd hunt and fish for meat, and plant vegetables.
What's your weapon of choice? Do you need to reload that thing? Gotta plan for that? I can use all firearms (pistols, rifles, shot guns, black powder) that civilians have access to with ease and a more than fair amount of proficiency - as are the people specifically named coming with me. I'd loot the ammo (it's a lot of looting for an Eagle Scout I know, but it is in the spirit of saving me and mine - I'd not kill to do it though) from stores, abandoned homes, abandoned policecars (shotgun shells and pistol ammo). I'd try to keep the firearms more for big game and defense. Fortunately, I can also wield a cross bow and the ammo for that's retrievable (for hunting or only a zombie or two). For hand held weapons I'd go for police night sticks, brass knuckles, and crow bars (an effective club and tool). I can also build bows and arrows - it takes time though and I can manage to hit something the size of a person with one - but it's not my strongest area.
Got a survival philosophy? Of course, as any good scout - "Always be Prepared". If you didn't stop to think how something could go wrong, that's usually the way it will go wrong. Also "Aim for the head" even if it doesn't stop the zombie - blowing it's jaw off or putting out it's eyes will severly impead its ability to be a threat.
Are you willing to hook up with other survivors? Yes, but I'd be on my toes with them until they proved trustworthy.
Is your plan based on a book/movie/blog/scientist we may have heard of? Partially "The Zombie Survival Guide" book, plus in movies people always try to barracade themselves in somewhere and get surrounded. In the woods every direction the zombies aren't coming from is an escape route.
