use renewable energy ONLY because if your fortress runs on gas or oil what happens if its gone to where you cant raid for more? and if you can make a closed hamster wheel human sized and sedate some zeds , then throw them in there and make a little box and put a hamster in there then, when the zeds wake up they keep making the wheel spin regardless by trying to get the hamster :P

What are the few places that are going to have self sufficient power for an extended period of time? There are a few forward thinking people who have solar power or wind power set up for their own homes and places like schools and shopping malls will have emergency power but it will be finite. Police stations and fire stations will have power for a bit, but the places that I can see that will have power and be fortified well beyond what you could do in your own home....The local jail! It's gotta have power for the normal blackouts to run and keep the baddies locked up, it is made to keep people in and even keep them out, it is built in sections so even if one area is breached it can be sealed off. Let's face it nobody is going to be worried about keeping people locked up if "Z" day has a firm grasp around the human race's neck. In my area there are 2 that are not used as jails anymore but they are still maintained so they are still running power and water to the facility.
Failing to have an impregnable fortress of suburbia available I would be practicing my camping skills, even out in the backyard. Gas, oil and batteries are fine and will last for a bit, but as I mentioned before, they are a finite resource. Better read up on the pioneers and native people to find out how they did it for hundreds of years. The fear is what will happen when "Z" day comes? Who will over come who? That is the question. Will we be able to take back our civilization from the flesh eaters, of course we hope so, but I would advise all my fellow survivors to be prepared to live a basic type of life if we can't. |

I have a perfect solution to this problem called "keeping fit in the fortress". Go search for that tread. the following link tells you how to make electric generators INCLUDING a waterwheel generator.

Although solar power is the easiest to come by and the most plentiful, to combat boredom one might consider constructing a means of obtaining power from the living dead. I'm not suggesting we wire them up like the matrix... although it would be cool.... I am suggesting as so many listed above that you construct a dynamo generator, with zombies as the source of power. If we don't feel bad killing them we can't really feel all that badly about putting them in a hamster wheel to power our TV and looted XBox. If you think about it, it's perfect, as long as you don't actually bring them into your fortress to do so, you have a endless or renewable energy source that will run/shamble all day and all night, it's much better than spending all day on a stationary bike, only to have zombies come after you now that you are too tired to run away.

this would be a great time ot have a gernerator
George Washington was able to do it and so can we 1) light candles 2) read books 3) board games / card games 4) paper pin and a good riffle target practice those zombies trying to sneak up on you 5) if you have an RV there is no problem 6) live in the boonies and use propaine or a gernerator no problem 7) Minanight / omish never used it before why worry about it now

When the lights go out I use a power inverter. It runs off a 12 volt battery and I'v powered Lights for 5 days at ren faires with out any trouble. Also recharges cell phones nicely. A 12 volt battery is easy to find and rechargeable.

If you want to use car batteries for electricity I suggest you go to a local farm store and pick up a couple of solar electric fence units. You can use them to recharge your batteries. For fire im going to get a good supply of propane. I have camp stoves that I have a hose to hook to my 20# tank. Propane is easy to get while or after Z day. Most factories will have it on hand for fork lifts. There are also tanks at alot of gas stations, or go to the propane dealership. I do plan to use wood in the winter, There probably wont be many other choices were it gets cold. Filtering water wont be to hard I have been practicing with it. I have found that if you take 4 of the Britta or any water filter you can get at any store, 2 5 gallon pails, and you can filter water. You cut 4 holes in one of the buckets, Liquid nail (or your choice of adhesive ), attach and seal the filters to the bottom of the pail ( in the holes ), then hang it over the second pail you can filter 5 gallons in 30 min. It may not be as pure as a fancy hiking filter but you don't have to stand there and pump in. I tested it with some lake water from down the road and its been 2 weeks and i'm not dead yet. (OR AM I,---HA HA )
