"On a different note (and back to the OP's question), I also like the .357 Magnum revolver. It has always struck me as the single 'essential' handgun a person should own.

Personally, I think a pistol is better for most users. It's a bit embarrassing most casual revolver shooters don't even realize a revolver can "jam" - powder fouling or poor neck tension on ammo (we ARE talking disaster survival where ammo choice isn't as discerning) can bind up the cylinder, whereas a simple stovepipe, double feed or dud round can be cleared with relative ease.

I would actually say for long term maintenance, an autoloader pistol is simply superior to a revolver. Most revolver owners are terrified of removing the side plate on their guns because the things look like a watch inside, whereas a detail strip is a completely normal matter for a pistol owner. You need to be a specialist to do any sort of work (polishing aside) on a typical revolver.

Plus, a speedloader isn't exactly easy to use. Six bullets into six chambers at the same time - maybe even eight. And it's not a simple push operation for some loaders, which require you to lock the cylinder in place, turn the rear knob and drop the rounds. A pistol is one large box into one large hole, and a yank on the slide.

And they also make pistol caliber carbines now that share ammo, so I think the repeating rifle thing is a moot point.

Not saying there's no reason to use a revolver - no limp wristing, contact shooting, better triggers, intimidation, etc. But I think revolvers are highly overrated and a little bit misunderstood by a lot of folks.

The ones that aren't though, may mess up your day if you aren't prepared with an axe or sledgehammer. Though, the difference between a twelve and a twenty actually hitting the target is pretty negligible.

How so? In a zombie scenario, I find the semi-automatic handgun front and center in my survival strategy. You have a light, compact platform with a sizeable magazine, respectable firepower in the right calibers, and high mobility.

If you consider that most engagements would be close to medium range, a reliable, accurate sidearm would be preferrable to a long arm in my opinion, being that you're trading mid to long range accuracy for mobility and CQC ability.
