All right. You're a city slicker, and Z-day is here. People left and right are either raiding stores, killing people, being bitten, or something...else. You would want to avoid them. What would you avoid?
What if you're not a city slicker? I would get out of the city altogether, go to the most remote place possible that still has population (such as a cabin or even a backwater town), then gather strength (numbers, firepower, sustainability). Then, when you have enough strength, move on up to a more populated area (as you will able to defeat the undead there). Never go above a 10,000 populated city (excluding outlying areas, since zombies only do short range scavenging and killing).

Sgt.schultz says: Believe it or not, but if it happens, several cults will spring up, letting themselves be bitten or whatnot. There will also be several end-of-the-world wild, HUGE orgies. Avoid both, as well as raiding stores, holing up at a Wal-Mart or traveling to a military base, because that's what's going through 299 other people's minds as well.

DarkStorm89: Stay at home, lock all doors and windows, run upstairs and run the bath and all sinks with water, get all supplies upstairs, find any weapons (keeping the most useful one on your body somewhere), demolish the staircase by any means necessary (with the exception of fire) and stay up there with any other people you like. If you have an attic, then once the top floor is safe and consider moving up to this space instead. If zombies manage to somehow get into your position, leave via the attic window onto the roof. Voila! Don't bother with anything else, just stay away from it all!
(Yeah, I know there were certain things I missed out, but that's it in a nutshell :D)

If you think about it, you are pretty screwed where ever you go in the city. There are strong buildings but, a lot zombies. In the farmland, it's the opposite. If you get up a mountain you wont have that much food-twinsword
What to avoid? Well lets see here... I want to definitely avoid the undead. Next I would say the living. Then starvation. SO, to say all that is a criteria for a location would make it a bit more difficult to find the right spot.
You don't want to go to commercial buildings and areas, people loot those in a regular civil uprising type riot. Think if the end was nigh? You want to avoid any police/military camps, shelters or anything more than aid on the spot. They will have the very best of intentions, but I see nothing but failure do to over crowding. If the zeds don't get them, hunger and disease will. I also say stay away from major residential zones like suburbs and city spans.
So that leaves us with a few options. Rural territory, preferably a ranch or farm house. Don't think you can go out and harvest though. That would be stupid. Maybe a garden would work. Next is mountain territory like a cabin. I think it is the best location if is properly prepared. You need a years worth of food before you can call this your log fortress. It offers isolation and hard terrain that would slow the undead and the living alike. That includes you. The last land based option I see is the industrial zones. Sparsely populated in the first place they are already equipped with deterrent measures such as fences, drainage ditches and walls. With the availability of building materials you could manufacture a fortress in no time flat. Look to large warehouses. There is, usually, a limited number of entrances and exits, windows are well above arms reach and are usually heavy framed buildings with durability in mind.
Now unless you have 10K rounds sitting in your pick-up truck and a years worth of food water and clothing, you'll have to scrounge. So bear in mind your are going to have to leave your fortresses at some time and risk contact with friend or foe, the living or the undead. Springatron

ideal group when you are on the move is 4 Mulattowarrior: i agree with the not going into obvious places but what i don't agree with is the whole, sitting in your attic with a bunch of supplies and weapons i think that you should go to a local gun store, get as many weapons as you can hold without getting tired when you run then you go to a local prison suggested you go to an old prison with less electrical locks and more concrete walls. The advantages of going to a prison would be that there is a lot of canned food, generators, if prisoners are infected they are most likely to be in a jail cell where they can easily be killed or left there(if you're alone cuz some people are retards), and last but not least there are A LOT of weapons inside a prison.
I would wait until the major looting is done, and THEN hole up in Costco, I don't want to deal with the mobs and cults, but Costco would be one of the places to be. As far as the waiting period, i live in the sticks and my house is stocked and fortified enough to last a few weeks. - vanrulzz
GunnerGraye:Umm..let's see, cults, mobs, other groups that will survive no matter what they have to do, ahh what scenario that is. Well, first thing should be to establish your group..or if nobody likes you...just skip to step 2: Make your hideout. Someplace secure, like..I dunno wherever you cant think of. And then, if any hostile groups, cults, mobs, etc. come along, TRY NOT TO KILL THEM ALL! They are very valuable as you will come to see. Take prisoners if you are able to subdue the hostiles. But I guess if your not a vicious as me.. you could you just let them go or kill them. Anyways, what you do with the prisoners is; say there was a fairly large amount of zombies..enough that you want to get away but you don't want to waste time killing...well you simply toss a prisoner or 2 (provided that their wrists and ankles are tied tight so they cant scramble away.) into the horde and they will be too busy snacking on the poor person or people that you have thrown to them, to notice that you quietly snuck away to a safe place.
EvacMedic: My style of survival is to be on the move. So avoid large cities, avoid the coast, avoid large groups of people, avoid the undead, and avoid starvation or dehydration. Other things to avoid are in-fighting in your own group. It's most likely the average survivor will want whatever food and supplies they can get, so if you can avoid it, stay away from about anyone you can. Trust your numbers and don't risk losing anyone to a stupid decision. Think very hard about your move. If you decide to restock supplies and see a wallmart, consider the zombie numbers, the likely number of survivors you'll encounter... you need to know as many variables as possible. It's not easy, I'll admit, but you have to really avoid Ignorant or Foolhardy decisions. You could run into one person, they're a survivor, and they want your supplies. Don't just accept them as trustworthy! It's Dog eat Dog, and if you don't want to be eaten literally or figuratively, think before you act.

one thing to remember is that you are not the only one who is going to be trying to loot the gun store.try to get a gun before they rise Dmurl5-
Something big to avoid in a Zombie attack
Something I call the "Survivor Domino Effect"(SDE). During the SDE, you have your closest friends and family come. In turn, your friends have their friends and family come with you. This continues until you are leading about 200 people. Chaos will reign, and you will be unable to control them. Stop this by either going alone or informing your group to prevent this.
SuperSoldierRCP- i say head to the high hills wait 1-2weeks if u can camp and all then go down to the city and setup your base and anyone alive is worth living/surviving with
BrokenArrow: Like always, avoid big stores, police stations, military bases, and other areas people flock to. I would barricade myself into living space (be it apartment or something else) contact the people I plan to survive with and wait until the initial panic subsides and/or I have a decent picture of what is going on.
honestly i have alot of pent up stress right now so i would sit on my front porch and wait for a few to approach then beat their head in. when i get bored or tired i would leave. most likely i would find my freinds and camp with them strength in numbers. right? ya theres a chance i might have to run a few zombies over, infestation takes awhile the virus normaly takes about a day so the corpses wont animate for a while that when you prepair. like possibly burning the ones you can. im getting off topic. i would most likely avoid highly populated areas like malls and things like that.
