What to do if your fortress is overrun

On this page, assuming your barricaded area is overrun by Zed's, I'm asking "What will you do?"

Calosz+: Ill have an escape route to the roof and retrack the ladder and use a bridre that has been built to another house and cross it and later on destroy the bridge or leave it for another survivor. The next house will be barricaded strongly and no entry in or out and have supplies. It will have a escape route underground to a deserted parking lot that was once cleared by me. Ill drive off with my supplies and head to my next fortress that i built extra tough.

Gman251990: I like the whole barracading yourself in the attic idea but set up points where you can contain the threat and gradually reclaim the fort to the point where the zombies came in and then seal that up and continue to hold out.

The_Professional: One option is to reach the roof of my house through the attic. The attic itself requires a ladder to get into so zombies can't stumble up there. This is a last ditch effort as such an action would most likely end with us starving to death on the roof. My main option is to load up as many supplies into my car (modified for a zombie threat) and take off for high ground. This option would require advanced knowledge of the zombie mob. Since part of my plan is to patrol the surrounding area for such a threat, this works out well.

Lordofwar1: Always build a second line of defence. Why evacuate, when you can just hole up in your fortress in a fortress and unleash a super weapon. Which brings me to my super weapon advice; use things such as burning streams of propane spewing from tanks hidden inside the walls. Ok, it may not be a super weapon, but its still awesome. Then, run out shooting and reclaim that fortress!

Ruckus: A good plan B--
1st- as much as possible locate the security breech-- via alarm(s), Security or CCTV, quick yet cautious inspection. So as you run--you don't end up running into a mess of them.
I hope you would've already established hiding places inside walls, floors and ceiling while you where staying there. A few simple booby traps and/or means to trap or destroy (with fire) any Zombies who enter facilities.
The less pursing ZEDS you have to worry about the better.
Firearms are find-- but sooner or later you run out of ammo. Besides--they often make too much noise-- possibly drawing unwanted attention.

cormacr9:cover your house in petrol and climb out a window.then chug a few lighthers in the window and watch the zeds fry...

vanrulzz: Well, Costco doesn't have much to defend yourself with except various tools, so grab the best I can find and fight to the (un)death! Not much else you could do anyway.
Sgt.Schultz: Well, seeing as though that is our fortress, we have the following advantages- 1. We know the turf. 2. Our ammo is waiting for us inside the base, so it's not like you have to lug as much as you can out with you. 3. The zed's inside have no use for anything, so you can have everything back in pristine (or close to) condition.

kingrich3: I recomend not dying, it seems to work, seriously though. build your fortress across several small islands, then if one goes in the crapper, you just boat or swim to the next. that's what I'm doing. It'll work trust me.

Redeker: This an obvious problem with no immediate solution considering you have not thought through things carefully and have not properly fashioned an exit route, even if this route is just to set up a secondary line of defense some high spot within your location that might serve as a temporary shelter until you have managed to push back the undead hordes, it is necessary to plan an exit in case of this type of emergency.

zombieshoota207:My plan would go something like this:Me-Everyone to the fall back position while Home Team protects your flanks-Soldier-Sir, we don't have a fall back position-Me-Run to the Prison then!!!!!Everyone meet up at the prison.Don't panic. Don't panic.Panic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

EvacMedic: If you happen to be unfortunate enough to have your fortress overrun, I suggest you attempt to vacate the premises. If you have no escape plan and only expect to fight, you are born to lose, my friends. You must not only have an escape plan, but several. There is never a one way out, there are several if you've planned for such an instance. Fighting might work for one or ten Zombies, but in all likelihood you are going to very quickly find yourself looking at more and more of them pouring through the crack in your defenses. You should stick to whatever escape plans you've made. Rendezvous at whatever predestined point you have, and only wait as long as you have to. Don't stick around the fortress, draw them out. There are several steps that could be mentioned, from escape to recapture, but honestly the main point is to get out of harm's way, unless you like the idea of getting bitten hard... real hard...

McSkullcracken: If your fortress is overrun, you are either very unlucky, or you chose a bad place to build a fortress. But bad luck and previous mistakes are not something to worry about. You need to do one thing: get yourself(ves) out of the fortress safely, quickly, and without attracting too much of the zombies' attention. Hopefully you planned for an occasion such as this, and you have a number of escape routes built into your fortress, and a place to meet up with any fellow survivors you may have gotten separated from in all the confusion. If...you don't have an escape plan...well...then you are going to have to think quickly. Are there windows you could escape through? An upper floor, not too high, that you can find a way out of, even if you just jump onto some bush or something? Maybe a fire escape? The real key here is that if you have a fortress, you need an escape plan to go with it. Even a fall back position in the fortress is better than just deciding to "go for it".

Alicestar:

in order to hold off the zed's effectively you must first understand that in order to have an effective stronghold you must have multiple layers of physical barricades along with an exit strategy. i like to go with the three layer method in which you barricade the weak points of your stronghold upon arrival. layer 2: about 6 feet from the outer walls you construct a barricade wall as high and strong as you can and layer 3: i like to use air.....what do i mean well if your in a place that has access to building materials set up scaffolding connected to the roof support structure. as long as no ladders are down you can take back your stronghold by controlled sniper fire with ease and then reinforce your barricades under the watchful eye of those snipers. now i know that all of you are saying "thats so unrealistic" but if you think about it most warehouse stores have forklifts, steel shelving, and most sell welding equipment or at least have hardware like bolts and drills and stuff. trust me, I worked at the Sam's club here and i know for a fact they have everything i need to accomplish this mission with ease.

Kaikelx: Run/drive like heck. If you are in a group, chances are thatsombody knows a place that isn't already occupied and is a good location. If you planned ahead, then you should know where you are going. Personally, the only fighting I'm going to do is to secure the way out.

Icewater:
So the zed's have overrun my barricaded fortress, I'd sure like to find out who fell asleep on duty, but that's for later. First off, a little background information, I would first fortify and expand the original CP, and establish a fallback point somewhere near 15 miles north of our current position. I would appoint my second-in-command as the leader of this position and heavily fortify it more so than my CP, considering it would be our "safe haven" if the CP where to get overrun. Secondly because the Costco I have chosen for the CP has a garage, I would immediately put the two mechanics I have on my trusted list to work on building a "fleet" of vehicles that are powerful enough to move through horde(s) of zombies, and be able to transport several people and the supplies to sustain them for several days-weeks, and have these supplies in the vehicles along with two hundred rounds of ammunition, assuming we are able to find enough ammunition, or are using the same caliber rifles/handguns.
Now onto our failure in defense. We would begin a fighting retreat to the final barricaded section of our CP, using only enough ammunition to slow down the oncoming horde, hopefully the retreating team will be able to pull off headshots due to the close-quarters nature of the battle, and effectively halt their invasion. If not, we would retreat to the garage, our remaining fortification, and load up into the assortment of vehicles, preferrably 4x4 trucks with camper shells, but one never knows. Then we would proceed to escape our CP, driving north to our secondary base of operations, where hopefully my second-in-command has everything well under control. And attempt a mounted offensive to retake our original CP from the horde(s), if that does not work, begin to rebuild another secondary CP, somewhere in the vicinity of 15miles.

Assuming I picked a large fortress I would put explosives in all the hallways and some furniture that can obstruct the walkway to hold them off. Alternativly I would select a fortress with a vertical aid. That way I could just blow the staircase and rain some grenades. Maybe a secondary base would be helpfull but I would make it small. I would only have to survive there for a few days and then go back to my fortress. When I clear out the remaining Z's I would restock the second place and continue in Aid.

Jesden: My main fortress is actually in a tree, so I can easily get up there and hide. I'll also have more than one tree occupied, So I can have space to store things. The ground is just an entrance way. Plus they would have to fill the ditch in front of the wall with dead before they could get at the actual wall/gate.

Thrawn5: My main plan is to not let the zombies into the fortress, if the unspeakable happens and they do somehow get in I will fall back to the second teir of defence (so on to the 3rd and fourth if needed) and kill them, eventually becoming one of them or taking back my fortress (or abandoning it).

RESIDENT-ADAM: My survival plan actually falls with the majority of it living on the run, a nomadic approach if you will. So if a "holding-restover" area gets overun, no big mess, just "load, make ready" and shoot my way out of it.

Pfc.nevarez: My plan is going to change from what i have already i am already planning as if it is over run, once u find more then ten flee ( the infection will will spread too quickly

I'd tell everyone to pull out.
Once everyone has escaped, I'll detonate propane bombs, C4, IEDs etc. placed strategically around the house with a remote, then promptly flee, cutting down any undead that want to moan at me and/or decide I'm the Christmas Roast and try to eat me.

My big question is: why would the fortress I plan to call a permanent home have any flaws that a simple zombie could breach?
Cement is not hard to come by, nor are rocks and mortar. I understand it being difficult to build in a city, but once it is up, not much can destroy a decent six foot thick concrete wall with rebar reinforcement.

So, in the unlikely event this happened, you would want multiple fall back points, as well as a few plausible escape routes to fenced-off areas that you'd already cleared out. Also, booby traps would be great, as well as the whole multiple base idea. I think AngelaB had it best when she talked about satellite installations.

Kuthiani: Leave...

xIRISH4LIFEx: Remember the Alamo!!!!

Andy REDDSON: It’s very simple; I’ll cede the courtyard.
Let the skin jobs surround me, even tear up my rose garden; Now I got them where I can KILL THEM ALL. And the geraniums needed fertilizing anyways. They aren’t getting inside the castle proper anyways, since I will be diligent and ensure there’s no first-floor opening for them to get in through (and the ladders to the second floor will be raised away from their reach), so basically they’ve fucked themselves. After a few hours of sniping and machineguning the skin jobs, I’ll go out and burn off the bodies, and plant a new garden. Problem solved.
If there’s so many skin jobs that they can STILL get inside, then we were dead the moment the first moan was heard.

Zombie Stomp Says:

I have several plans for several different scenarios.

Plan one: I line the outer perimeters with c1 if I have enough time to make a perimeter of c1

Plan 2: The roof, bad idea but from there I can possibly retake the fort.

Holy Jesus Plan 1: Cross the creek, light a forest fire behind my group. That away the fire is between me and the zombies and the creek is between the fire and the mountains, where we'll hide in some caves I know of.

Holy Jesus plan 2: Survivors run for the creek and I give them a walkie talkie. Meanwhile me and a friend hop on our atv and haul ass for the local small dam, about a half mile away. once the survivors at safely across and partially up the mountain. We chuck all the explosives we can at the dam until it breaks, turning the creek into a river to block off the zombies. Hopefully the dam will blow and hopefull my and my friend wont get swept away once we have blown the dam.

every good baricade should have at least one fall back position
if at all possible there should be some kind of escape plan
There should also be traps to if nothing else they should slow the zombies down
