Winchester Model 1897Model: Winchester Model 1897
With over 1 million produced and a 60 year production span, the Winchester Model 1897 was the first successful pump-action shotgun in the world. Famed firearms designer John Browning designed the 1897, based off of the older Spencer pump. The 1897 not only brought pump-action shotguns into popularity, it also introduced the ability to remove barrel for field stripping, which is now the standard for shotguns. The 1897 introduced the shotgun into popular military use, seeing action as a trench sweeper in World War I and limited use in World War II. It was also particularly popular with the police and the American Express Messengers.. The shotgun was so effective in the trenches of World War I that Germany protested the massive killing power and threatened to severely punish POWs caught with shotguns; the United States responded by stating that they would enact equal measures, and the German protest never came to pass.

While superseded by the Model 1912 and discontinued in 1957, the Model 1897 can still be found today in regular use. Norinco produces the Norinco 97 copy; while not as well-finished as the original 1897, it is an almost exact copy.

Complexity

As its use in both World Wars attests, the Winchester Model 1897 is a very rugged shotgun that can survive in a variety of environments. The long slide that extends from the rear of the receiver when pumped and external hammer are unusual compared to modern shotguns, but nothing especially odd.

Controls

  • Safety: There is NO SAFETY on the Winchester Model 1897. The hammer can be set to half-c*ck, but there is no actual safety that prevents the trigger from being pulled when the weapon is c*cked.
  • Shell catch buttons: Located on both sides of the receiver. Squeezed to release shells from the magazine.
  • Slide release: Located on the left side of the receiver. Allows the slide to be moved back with the hammer c*cked when pressed.

Loading

Condition One, or "Locked and Cocked." Chamber loaded, magazine full, hammer cocked and safety applied.

  1. Point the weapon in a safe direction. Critical step in case it accidentally discharges!
  2. Pull the slide back to expose the chamber. Take a single shell and push it through the ejection port and into the chamber.
  3. With your left thumb on the hammer, pull the trigger just enough to cause the hammer to release. VERY CAREFULLY release the trigger and lower the hammer until it stops at half-c*ck.
  4. Take a shell and push it through the loading gate on the bottom of the receiver, pushing it all the way into the magazine. Continue until the magazine is loaded.
Condition Two. Chamber loaded, magazine full, hammer down, safety off.

Cannot be done.

Condition Three. Chamber empty, magazine full, hammer down, safety off.

  1. Point the weapon in a safe direction. Critical step in case it accidentally discharges!
  2. Take a shell and push it through the loading gate on the bottom of the receiver, pushing it all the way into the magazine. Continue until the magazine is loaded.
