Winchester Model 70Model: Winchester Model 70
The Model 70 is up there with the Remington 700 as one of the most popular bolt-action hunting rifles of all time. Since its introduction in 1936 it has been referred to as the "Rifleman's Rifle". While production paused in 2006, it resumed in 2008 and is still going strong. Like the Remington 700 it's available in a large variety of calibers and is an excellent companion for any marksman. Even Fabrique Nationale has created a military-style version, the FN Special Police Rifle, with a heavy barrel and a McMillan tactical stock.

The Model 70 is very much a standard Mauser-type rifle, though it's been through some minor changes; the 1964 revision that was a response to increasing labor costs included a bolt more similar to the Remington 700 that was its biggest competitor, a less elegant but perfectly reliable wedge-type extractor compared to the older claw type, hammer-forged barrels, an aluminum alloy trigger guard and floor plate in place of steel, and impressed checkering rather than cut. While the changes were heavily criticized, they actually made the action stronger and no less reliable, mostly just less elegant.

Complexity

The Model 70 has served hunters, police officers, and snipers in Vietnam equally well. The action is extremely robust and can stand up to a variety of environments. The biggest con is the relatively low magazine capacity, but the rifle is not designed for situations where rapid reloading is a must.
