The internet is not a magical cloud floating around in the sky. Every single web page you visit is hosted on a physical server (computer) somewhere in the world. Every internet-based application you use is hosted somewhere, which is connected to the internet via a physical connection of sorts.

Can you have some measure of connectivity after Z day? Sure. But there will be no "internet" as you know it. "The internet" is comprised of millions of tiny little networks, all routed and connected together all over the world. From your computer to your router is one network, from your router to your ISP is another network, from there to another router is another network, etc etc ad nauseum.

Most of them will shut down when the power goes off, meaning that even if the servers are up, they will not be routed correctly to all places. ARIN, which assigns and tracks all of the useable IP addresses will not be around. So all of the corporate class B addresses, and your little home network Class C IP's will be worthless.

If you have people who know what they are doing and have the equipment to make it happen, you can still accomplish email communication, and whatever services you can install and host. But you won't be playing World of Warcraft, shopping on Amazon or looking anything up on Wikipedia anytime soon. "
