The very first thing we will do is lock the doors and windows. We will then put some furniture in front of the

back door, which we will not use.

The upstairs we will leave completely unbarricaded, as zombies will not be able to reach the second floor.

The downstairs windows we will board up and attach cloths to (So no light will be able to escape, just in case we need to light a candle or something at night).

Our fallback position is in the attic, where we will be completely safe. Unfortunately, we will also starve to

death up there if we can't reclaim the place quickly, or wait out a raider attack successfully. All of our non-perishable food will be stored there; We won't eat it unless it is absolutely necessary to do so (Run out of food downstairs etc.). A large quantity of constantly changed water will also be located there as well.

As for the outside, fences will be constructed ASAP. They will be taller than a man, a few boards thick, and

spiked at the top. We have unlimited access to wood where we are, but cutting the trees down and refining them quickly will be a difficult and all-day-every-day job. We are located about four hours by car away from the nearest major city to us, meaning we'd have, hopefully and most likely, advance warning. By foot, it would probably (I haven't done the math) take a few weeks or more for anything to reach us.
