Zedshot's Survival Plan .This is a featured page

This is a survival plan that a several coworkers and I have put together. We all work at a small correctional center, our plan is to fortify the very jail in which we work in. It's already stated in our S.O.P that in the case of a pandemec or emergency on a national scale that we are to evacuate and release all occupants. Now I believe that the first zombies would quite possibly (due to lack of knowledge in the beginning) be arrested for battery and assault, those sorts of crimes. Of course if that is the case then the jail would be full of them after a while. Of course people will flock to public service centers for information, some of these unlucky people would meet there demise at the hands of a zed.

This is the front of the Main Facility. All entrances are painted red for visibility.

In front of the main facility lies the Sheriff's Deptartment. To the left of the facility lies motor pool, to the far left lies a storage warehouse. 20 foot high fences border the entire grounds, topped with razor wire. There are only two areas where the fencing breaks off. To the far left is the entrance to the facility grounds. To the right is a dirt road that allows access to the back of the facility, there is an apple grove that the inmates tend to.

My Coworkers and I have set up a randevous point at a house not far from the jail, it is owned by one of our commanders. At the set of an outbreak our vehicles would already be loaded down with equipment and supplies needed to survive the initial few weeks of an onslaught. At this house we will lay low until some of the frenzy has died down and most of the population has either abandoned the city or turned into zeds, roughly a day or two. Before we leave everyone will be given a nutritious breakfast and ample water. We will get into our vehicles and drive to a hill that sets behind the jail. From the commanders house to the jail, too avoid the cluttered roadways, it would be an all off road drive for about a mile. Please excuse the out of scale proportions.

We are not worried about going off road because all of our vehicles are built to go off road. The hill that was previously mentioned overlooks the jail, from the crest of the hill to the jail is roughly 500 yards, it is an unobstructed view and provides a visual of the entire encompassing area around the jail.

With a local population of only about 10,000 the zeds wouldnt be to high in number around the jail. Upon arrival at the crest of the hill we will exit our vehicles and set up a firing line. Three Men will cover this firing line, each man watching a different direction, both sides and the rear. The firing line will consist of the remainder of the crew, armed with high caliber, high velocity rifles and with carbine back ups. These men will use said rifles to eliminate any opposition or threat around the jail. A 500 yard shot for any of us is a simple task, All of us being avid gun enthusiasts, former and current military, law enforcement and as well as hunters.

If the the 500 yard cushion of space doesnt provide ample enough time for the men to eliminate every zed, then at 50 yards we will all switch to our faster firing carbines. Multiple preloaded magizines will be ready as well as our wives loading empty rifles so there wouldnt be a huge delay in firing cycles. Before anyone goes on about stress an panic causing problems, not saying there wont be, but let me point out that the majority of us are seasoned veterans in high stress situations (military combat and so on and so forth).

Zedshot's Survival Plan . - Zombie Survival & Defense Wiki

Upon elimination of all zeds and clearing a path to the jail, we will load back into the vehicles and get to the jail as quickly as feasible. Imediately exit the vehicles upon arrival at the jail, Four men will post up outside to privide cover while two people set up two ladders to the roof. Two men will then climb up the ladder and post up on the roof providing cover from a higher position. All women and children will then climb up the ladder while all the men provide cover for them. Then two by two the remaining members will file up the ladder, posting up to provide cover once on the roof. Leaving everything in the vehicles for now except for the necessary guns and ammuniton.

Zedshot's Survival Plan . - Zombie Survival & Defense Wiki

All women and children will then be converged into the center of the roof top. Four men will post up in the corners of the roof to provide surveillance. Through the emergency escape hatch, a three man team will enter the jail. These three men are part of the SWAT's Breaching and Clearing Team. These men will secure the control room. All other men will enter the jail, excluding the four providing surveillance. We will then proceed to clear out and secure every square inch of the jail leaving no zed alive inside the jail. The women and children will then enter the jail. By now the commotion caused by gunfire has alerted all local zeds which are now convening around the jail.

The jail in its entirety is a fortress. Cinderblock, Steel and Cement a foot thick all the way around with the only window being in the front lobby, said window is one inch thick reinforced, bullet proof plate glass inside a steel frame. Imediately we would dissasemble an inmates bunk and take the steel body and further reinforce the window further by welding it across the frame. The welder is easily obtained, as there is one in the building, gas operated with three full tanks at all times. Some of us do have welding experiance

Bunker down, gather the wool blankets out of storage and the matresses and allow the women and children as well as the men to recooperate, rest and gather themselves back together. We will allow the zeds to gather around the jail in which they cannot get into, Leaving four people on the roof at all times and allowing them to rotate out, this will provide us with surveillance of the surrounding area and possibly a zed head count. There is enough dry food in storage and well supplied water we will be able to survive for weeks just on that alone. This means we have only two days to clear out the zeds surrounding the outer perimeter of the jail. What we see is that ammo will be scarce and better suited for hunting therefor at this point ammo consumption will be little if at all.

Miscellaneous items around the jail will then be recrafted and remade into spear like objects. Dont tell me you couldnt find away to do this with house hold objects, we are pretty much in a steel warehouse. From the roof each zed will be killed with a spike through the roof of the skull. This will be a tedious process, time and energy consuming. Appropriate rest and breaks along with food and water will be given. Upon killing all the zeds around the jail, we will retire back into the fortress and allow another day to let the zeds build back up again and let the process start anew the following day.

After the forementioned tasks are completed, four men will post up on the roof again and provide continuing surveillance. The remaining men will convene at the vehicular sally port. These men will remove the dead again zeds and clear away for the vehicles to get into the sally port. Once inside and secure the women and children will unload the vehicles into the jail. In the vehicles is enough non perishables and micellaneous supplies to keep us going as well as with the jails stock we will be set for weeks if not months. I personally have enough MRE's to keep two people fed for a year, courtesy of a previous army depo job. One person will then get into the bobcat thats in maintenence and will move all zed corpses into a pile where they will be promptly burned. The property will be scavenged for any useable items, The S.O across the street will be raided and the weapons cache and ammunition storage, if any at all, will be moved into the jail.

Once the zed advances and occurances have died down substantially, further fortification will take place to provide a bigger area of comfort. A team will be set out to man two back hoes owned by the jail, we all know how to operate these, a requirment of our job. Fuel is not a concern because we have our own gas station with 10,000 gallons of fuel, after the outbreak I would assume at the most it will have only about 2000 gallons remaining. These back hoes will be used to dig a 10 foot by 10 foot trench/moat around the entire jail, these back hoes will be covered by two armed guards at all times. This will double as a zed trap and also a Tank/vehicle stop. To prevent corrosion and this trench from falling apart due to water errosion, it will be braced with the more than enough supply of rail road ties that are stored accross the street due to the recent dissasembly of the train tracks through town. With the amount of man power we posses this will take roughly one week.

Nearby the Jail is a Lumber yard that has Fence and gate material. A team will be dispatched to this lumber yard to take all of these materials. Construction of a fence encompassing the entire perimeter of the jail, set right behind the trench/moat. Any zed that falls into the moat will be killed with a spear head through the skull and will be promptly removed to prevent build up. 500 yards of clear space will be paved in all directions around the jail to provide a comfortable cushion of veiw. Within the gated perimeter we will begin to irrigate and plow some of the grassy land. With a natural occuring spring on the premises water is abundant. A team will be dispatched to go around town and search for miscellaneous supplies. A chicken roost placed inside a previous house and protected from zombies will hopefully be still intact at this time, bearing in mind we are weeks down the road from the initial outbreak, if said chickens are still alive we will move them back to the jail. They will have been left with ample enough feed and water.

Further fortification of the jail will take place at all times by rigging vehicle stops out of concrete barrier walls around the perimeter. Hunting parties will be set out to search for food and further supplies. A radio tower would be constantly monitered for further support from outside sources. Maybe Just Maybe we could survive the hell that would have been unleashed on earth.

This is where the primary farmland will occur. This area is about 5 acres in size and is easily defendable from raiders.

You will notice the blue line is actually a running creek. It has water year round and is only about 3-6 inches deep. However the water is clean and can easily be pumped to supply water to our field and to us.

The blue circle in this picture is a natural occuring spring. It is full of water roughly 3-4 feet deep, mostly underground. The water is murky and will have to be purified before it is drinkable, however it could be pumped as is to water our farmland.

1 YEAR AFTER Z-DAY
The Zedshot Compound
Towers will be constructed out of any wood and scrap metal we can aquire. These towers will be placed in the corners of the compound. They will be manned 24 hours a day, they will serve as watch towers and sniper towers. On the lower portion of the tower will be a small living area. 2 Guards will be stationed at each tower, one will be on the upper tier the entire time. There will be 12 hour rotations, the second guard will be on the lower tier sleeping. There will be all the basic ammenities within the lower tier including a fire stove and a bed. The stoves pipe will run up the center of the tower. The pipe should afford a small amount of heat to radiate to the upper tier. Zedshot's Survival Plan . - Zombie Survival & Defense Wiki

Outside of the compound is a moat. This moat will be empty and serve as a vehicle trap and a zombie trap. It will be 10 feet deep by 10 feet wide. On the inside perimeter of the moat will be a 10 foot high fence. Any zombie that falls into the moat will be lured to the edge of the moat and be dispatched with a spear like object, this will reduce as much contact as possible with the zombie.
Zedshot's Survival Plan . - Zombie Survival & Defense Wiki

The exterior yard will be used as a large chicken coop. This will allow the chickens plenty of room to roam around and forage. This area could keep well over 100 chickens satisfied.
Zedshot's Survival Plan . - Zombie Survival & Defense Wiki

In between the interior and exterior fence perimeter will be livestock grounds. In this area we will keep any deer, cattle, sheep, pigs that we either capture or have. We plan on keeping a breeding stock instead of killing everything.
Zedshot's Survival Plan . - Zombie Survival & Defense Wiki

We will reroute the creek to provide irrigation to our farmland. This should provide ample enough water for anything we wish to grow.

This is a great plan, also your firing line reminds me of orld war z. Did you get your inspiration from the book.

Zedshot How would you destroy my compound. (page: 1 2 3 4) 69 Aug 12 2011, 1:32 PM EDT by Unprepared

Lets just assume that my compound was succesfully built up to what my plan entails.
You as a raider, how would you overcome this fortress?
Or would you as a raider prefer to give up that life and seek solitude?
Pick and prod and ponder what are some major holes seen within my compound or something that could possibly destroy it completely.

I ask this from you so that I can cover up any overlooked areas which could pose to topple our community.
As well with this pick apart the plan itself and tell me how it can, would be, or possibly be ruined. Perhaps throw your input on how to make it better? Trying to make this cement and full proof, however cement still has to dry.

This is a great plan, and is well thought out.

The only Issues I see are fairly minor:

1.Raiders/Other survivors
you do not address this, and this will be just as big of a problem as Zed.

2.The source of your spring
Where does you spring come from? I have a spring running through my BOL, and I do not control where is comes from, so it can be contaminated. Who knows what a decomposing zed upstream will release into the stream. I have dug a well for my drinking water, and maybe you should think about only using your well for drinking water, and the spring for irrigation, and last resort backup drinking water.

3.Get more farm land
5 acres will not be enough to raise enough food for the number of people you have. You may be able to get enough supplemental food by hunting, by I would suggest clearing as much as you can. The 500 yard radius you are planning to clear may do it, and the right crop could help provide security/slow down zed/raiders.(every try to get through old grape vines, or wild blackberry vines?)
