A future history in the style of Theodore Judson's Fitzpatrick's War. World War Z tells the story of the world's desperate battle against the zombie threat with a series of first-person accounts "as told to the author" by various characters around the world. A Chinese doctor encounters one of the earliest zombie cases at a time when the Chinese government is ruthlessly suppressing any information about the outbreak that will soon spread across the globe. Monster Island
Monster Island
By David Wellington

"It's one month after a global disaster. The most "developed" nation of the world have fallen to the shambling zombie masses. Only a few pockets of humanity survive...
In New York City, the dead walk the streets, driven by an insatiable hunger for all things living. From the other side of the planet, a small but heavily armed group of schoolgirls-turned-soldiers comes in search of desperately needed medicine, with a former UN weapons inspector as their local guide. They think they are prepared for anything. On Monster Island they will find that there is something worse even than undead." - Book description

MonsterPlanetMonster Nation
By David Wellington

"Something horrible is growing in the dark. A wave of cannibalism and fear is sweeping America's heartland, spreading carnage and infection in its wake. Captain Bannerman Clark of the National Guard has been tasked with an impossible mission: discover what is happening - and then stop it before it annihilates Los Angeles.
In California he discovers a woman trapped in a hospital overrun with violent madmen. She may hold the secret to the epidemic but she has lost everything - even her name.
David Wellington's first novel, Monster Island, explored a world overcome by horror and the few people strong enough to survive. Now he takes us back to where it all began - to the dead the dead began to rise.

Forever Zombie: A Collection of Undead Guy Tales
Monster NationMonster Planet
By David Wellington

"Set twelve years after the shambling masses have overrun Manhattan, America, and the world, Monster Planet, is the mind-blowing conclusion to the Monster Trilogy. Oceans of blood, scattered limbs, wanton violence, and general mayhem abound, along with revived mummies, a scheming Druid, and David Wellington's signature brand of cool high-tech weaponry and sly humor - zombie as the ultimate consumers.
What do the undead want, aside from Fresh meat? does the steadily diminishing number of humans who have somehow managed to survive over a decade of living hell stand a chance on a planet where they've been reduced to the status of prey? It all ends here, on Monster Planet" - Book description

I am Legend I Am Legend
By Richard Matheson

First published in 1954, this book inspired 4 movies, but the real value is in the descriptions of living in an abandoned city. The plague that sweeps the country is not a zombie plague, but the situation followed is not all that different from any zombie survival challenge - stay alive when others want you dead. Live on food you can find, grow, or hunt. Face your fears. Deal with loneliness. And work on your aim...
This book is truly a masterpiece. As well as being superbly written, this work inspired George Romero to create his first Night. In short, we owe the modern zombie's existence to this novel. I HIGHLY recommend this.

Free, online series of zombie and horror novels from David Wellington: Monster Island, Monster Nation, Monster Planet, and the newest Plague Zone. Also available in standard offline book form.

A World Without Us
A World Without Us
By Alan Weisman

This book is great for learning about how the world will react to no Human Up-Keep. Important to know so you don't go into a house that won't help. It is documented in years going to 10,000 years.

Cell by Stephen King A truly excellent piece by a legendary author, this book has zombies spring from a terrible source: cell phones. Imagine that, anyone on a cell phone suddenly becomes a zombie. The crazy running kind. And, this being Stephen King, there are of course a number of twists to make the situation worse. Every zombie fan should read this book! And don't be fooled, you may find that these zombies have a little more about them...

The Living Dead
The Living Dead: A collection of zombie short stories from a variety of authors in the science-fiction/fantasy/horror vein, all selected and edited by John Joseph Adams, who also put together another great collection of short stories, Wastelands, featuring stories of the Apocalypse. This collection (the zombie one) features stories about every type of zombie I have heard of and many more that I haven't. While some are a little different than what you'd expect, it is by far an awesome collection of stories. I highly recommend this book, as well as the other mentioned, as it features a subject related to ours. -McSkullcracken

Book CoverPride and Prejudice and Zombies

By Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith

Now here is a book for those of us with a traditional austere sense of self (the whole three of us) as well those of us who love anything to do with kicking zombie ass (all 4 million of us). This is a classic mash up Jane Austen's traditional romance novel with a twist, the newly added cast of undead wandering around the country side. Roughly 75% of the text is Jane Austen's while the remaining 15% includes everything from villages burning to the ground due to the 'unmentionals' to differing ninja fighting tactics. Definately worth a look at.

General purpose reading for a zombie outbreak

While viewed as silly by some, an old fashioned Boy scout or Girl Scout Survival manual will teach some basics to the most simple among us.

Comic Books

  • Walking Dead
  • Deadworld
  • Marvel Zombies.
  • Or save a tree, and see our Zombie Webcomics page!
Manga
HSOTD
Highschool Of the Dead

Probably more useful information than the silliness Max Brooks creates lol
Its more about how to learn what works instead of telling you info that may get you killed
and dealing with people who can't handle it or are out to harm or con

A funny critical look at what could happen which can be found here:

Zombie Humor:

Although there is nothing funny about the threat of an actual zombie outbreak, here is a small collection of amusing items that remind us how to keep our sense of humor. It's one of the things that separates us from them.

The title asks it. Note it asks BOOK as in story. I mention this to stave off the endless barrage of "Zombie Survival Guide" mentions. I started this so that we can share our favorite stories and maybe get an idea for new reads.
