Zombie-Centric Books:
See also: Books- The Zombie Survival Guide - Max Brooks' first book. This book presents itself as a serious survival guide, however, it was actually written as a parody of other survival guides. Although it talks about the fictional Solanum virus and fictional zombie outbreaks, it contains possibly the most useful survival information. This book should be your first port of call when planning against an assault by the undead.
- In order to defeat the zombie, you must think like the zombie.act like a Zombie. The Zen of Zombie by Scott Kenemore will teach you how. This will ensure your success not only in the impending zombie apocalypse, but also in your daily life.
- World War Z. - the newest book by Brooks, contains a history of Zombie outbreaks.
- I Am Legend - The book, written by Richard Matheson, deals more with a plague of vampires that have taken over the earth, but is a great read about the implications of being a survivor amongst the living dead. The book was made into a movie starring Charlton Heston called "The Omega Man", and is currently being remade as a starring vehicle for Will Smith.
- Comics - there are just too many to list here, but when counting comic books, give yourself one "credit" for the genre, not one per comic you've read. Notable entries here include: Walking Dead, Deadworld, and Marvel Zombies.
- For long-term survival, any book in the Foxfire series is invaluable. These books are full of mountain lore and living, such as building a log cabin and chimney, recognizing and harvesting edible plants, hunting and cleaning animals, etc.
- Again, any first aid book is invaluable. Whilst it won't protect you from a Zombie bite or scratch, being able to properly treat yourself could leave you more mobile and less vulnerable.
- Check out The Rising and City of the Dead by Brian Keene, these are also not "traditional" zombies, but can give you some tips for survival. Go to his website BrianKeene.com to get the books or join the message board.
- Free, online series of zombie and horror novels from David Wellington: Monster Island, Monster Nation, Monster Planet, and the newest Plague Zone. Also available in standard offline book form.
- Day by Day Armeggedon by J.L. Bourne. The author is an active duty naval aviator. This self- published novel, written as a journal of an anonymous survivor whom mirrors the author, is a stunning and action filled adventure. Due to its early popularity, the book has been reissued and is available at Amazon .com. A sequel is in the works, and the first chapter can be previewed at www.TactricalUnderground.com.
Zombie Films:
- Dawn of the Dead - any version. This is one of the best zombie movies out there, there are alot of special feautres including the HOW TO KILL A ZOMBIE (docu).
- Day of the Dead.
- Night of the Living Dead.
- Return of the Living Dead (parts 1 - 5) - although if you are counting any of these you really need 6 because this was clearly just for entertainment....
- 28 Days Later - Not a "classic" zombie, but an alternative theory and possible subspecies that warrants discussion.
- 28 Weeks later - Sequel to 28 days. Deals with some of the mistakes you should not make in a post-infected world.
- Evil Dead (1 or 2) - general primer for the possible variants on undead/evil. May stray too far into the mythic aspects.
- House of the Dead (1 or 2) - again, if you are counting this one you better have 6 to your credit because the "facts" pale under the terrible acting. Makes it very hard to digest good zombie info.
- Last Man on Earth - not about zombies, but an excellent story of survival in an infestation. This 1964 movie ,starring Vincent Price was also based on the Richard matheson novel "I am Legend"
- Shaun of the Dead - a look at the "mid-infestation" stage possibilities where survivors still represent a decent amount of the population and some governing bodies are intact.
- Land of the Dead- a good movie based on a massive post infection state by the undead where most of the world is dominated by the undead. this shows survival techniques and it shows how you can change a city from an ordinary city to a zombie proof city.
- Dead and Deader- cool movie that kindof messes with the idea of zombies and how they come into being.
- Resident Evil-1,2,or 3
- Undead-A different look at how the zombie infection starts involving a meteor, and with out giving it away for those of you that haven’t seen it they have a very unique way of how to deal with the zombies in the way of a cure. Check it out, good effects on the zombies and funny dialogue. This movie is set in Australia.
- I Am Legend- Maybe not the typical thought of a zombie flick but it puts a unique twist on the situation.
- Fido - If you want to watch a funny zombie movie and you have already seen Shawn of the Dead about 30,000 times this is a good movie for you.
- Are there any musical situations?
- Eat Your Brains by Jonathan Coultan
- Iron Maiden attracts them easily
Video Games Featuring Zombies
See also: Zombie Games (Survival Simulation)- Dead Rising offers a semi-accurate demonstration of good and bad weapons to be used in a zombie outbreak. However, it may be less useful due to the main character not getting infected from single bites or scratches, as well as Zombies dying more easily then they really would (for example, dying from losing only legs). This game is very fun because you can use anything at your desposile as a weapon for example a cd or a bottle. The only problem with this game is that you have a main mission lin ethat has side quests that you can only have 1 try to do because this game is set in real time. For exaple side mission one is at 5 hrs into gamplay wants youve past 5hrs into the game then you cant do it again. This game takes 72 Real hours to complete.
- Resident Evil series (except 4 and possibly 5) These games are based on zombies being results of genetic experiment mishaps. Although zombies tend to be ridiciously strong eg. Taking 3-4 headshots to kill in the games.
- House of the Dead - and the whole "of the Dead" series. How can you beat a game like 'Typing of the Dead'? They don't quite have the creepy atmosphere of Resident Evil, but hey, killing zombies is killing zombies.
