You want a spearhead with a stop on it, otherwise Zed will walk up your spear. You also want it to be long enough and strong enough to hold. The wooden rods used in closets work well if you can find a good head for them (I bought mine from Atlanta Cutlery/Museum Replicas).

You also want your butt cap to be sufficiently pointed.

That way you can stab and push the Zed, using the spear to immobolize it long enough for another melee to move in and dispatch it safely. If help is not around, planting the back into the ground should hold the Zed long enough to run away.

Remember that spears are TEAM weapons.

Javelins and throwing spears (no stops) are great for disposing of Zed that are behind/through barriers when they are not an active risk and you want to conserve ammo.
