Why do zombies moan?
My theory is they may not work together but moaning draws attention of other zombies. 1 zombie cant break in a door or topple a fence. Thirty can. So think about this. One zombie sees you enter a warehouse. You think "meh its just one" and board yourself up. His / her moans draw others in and their moans draw even more. Soon you have a full blown hoard at your door. On some level it isnt really working together as they may not even acknowledge each other but it raises the chances of them getting you if they attract others to beat on the doors. Maybe the zombie doesnt know this is going on but the virus, bacteria whatever does it by design for a greater chance of success. Let me know what you think.

13th.Casualty
I think somtimes it's a victory cry and it just so happens that other zombies will be attracted by it. I mean, if you find a shard of diamond on the ground, you'd scream in delight and others will flock around you to see what's going on.

Vanrulzz:

why do zombies moan? that is a good question. i think there is no particular reason, and the imminent doom groan may just be another unrealistic myth, since zombies probbly aren't coordinated enough to use their vocal cords.

HellfireRe
Hmm. I think that 13th.Casualty may be right. When zombie attacks it usually moans really loud. Like humans yell Greegah! Or something like that. They may not know anything about teamwork but they may know that in a group you have better chanches of getting food. That is my opinion. = )

Thrawn5:
Why do zombies moan? A zombie moans when it sees food, not to do anything really, it is just reflex. As for teamwork of zombies, they have no cognitave ability (I like the way of saying this, you can stick 12 zombies on one end of a broken bridge and a live human on the other end, one by one the zeds will walk off the broken part without seeing the crevas). Zombies are attracted by noise (of any sort) and will instinctivly come towards the bellow of another undead, this is just coincedence, not a rallying call.

Lt.Mörder:
I believe that zombies moan because if you tilt your head limply to the side in any direction and breathe heavily and slowly you let out a moan of sorts. I believe this because from what I know zombies often do not have much support in thier necks, so they go limp.
Toomin: I agree most with Thrawn, although I think it's just a reflex that isn't even motivated by food. Zombies moan when there isn't any prey around as well. Although they do moan louder when they see humans or anything else to eat. And as for the teamwork thing (even on asubconsciouslevel,a subconscious level, if you can say zeds have asubconscious)a subconscious) a lot of the time zombies don't even realize there are other zombies around. They pretty much ignore each other and wander around until they find food, in which case their increased moaning draws more out.

LordCohliani- I think that the zombies are trying to talk but the best they can do is moan. They are like baby's lol!

TekkenDevil-- I agree with Lt. mörder. The zombie does not know or care about suppressing the use of its vocal cords. It certainly does not moan for its personal goals like some have mentioned above. A zombie's brain is severely damaged. Beyond the capability to use teamwork.
