So you have a safe house, fellow survivors, established your sanity, and everything seems all right. But there is one problem--medical science as we know it does not apply to zombies. Voodoo and magic are common theories as to why Z day may occur, and if you are going to survive in this world, reclaiming it will be important. I'd like for people to offer their own strategies in taking the planet back from the grips of the grimy undead.

i have a plan for a community that is mostly in a circle on a hill right next door to my house with woods to the back and a pond on one side down the hill well my idea was of coarse simple wooden walls at ground lvl but for my main offensive from roof top to roof top have rope bridges with marksmen on top with anything from guns bows catapults or just throwing rocks to pass the time you know you just can run out of rocks
for power and lights there are several key points for windmills there will be a blacksmith and medical buildings on the inner circle and a large double door trapping gates at the front

I would get riot pants (They are fortified against attack for the SWAT teams), and a riot jacket, and a riot helmet. Then I would get my 2 katana and work my way through the zombies. The most basic katana strike of Eshin-Ryu-Iado is supprisingly a decapitating one. Most people say that decapitation isn't good enough but if you decapitate them they cant moan and you can just crush theyre head with a bludgeon during your, "After Sweep".

since i live in lansing MI. this is a good plan. first i would gather my freinds and family and we would head out in tractors and large trucks. then we would head up north to muskegon. to get supplies also there we would take the WOLVERINE (one of those small freighter boats, or mabe a large car boat) up to upper pennicula. take a stop at a port to pick up more supplies. then its off to isle royal. once there we would set up a camp. after several of days of setup we would try to gather more people. then when we're all settled in, we will start chopping trees. once we have enough trees we would start to build our castle!!!! we would mostly live off of fish so we would only need a few cows for milk. but ofcourse we would bring all 16 of my rifles and shotguns! =) this will take about 4-5 months to build this giant fortress. if we didn't bring the trucks it would take several years. so this is good. then when ever we absolutly need to we will make raids on towns for supplies. also i think we might be above the frozen line. which is good. plus when the president needs to nuke someplace, i won't get hurt by it. also we will have two dogs for anyone to try and enter my village fortress. it will be a dog sniffer test followed imediatly by a vilsual inspection. my cats can also come along too if they want. but we will make our goods and use furs as currency! this is because they will be a VERY saught after cammodity! also traps and other items will be bartered with. guns and ammo will be the second most sought after items. if any of you will want to join me, the base will be on the west side about 300 feet form the shore. the main reason that i chose to colonize this island is because it is in the middle of a terridying great lake and there is no people there!!! (except for a research center) there are no building there. and the only living creatures there are deer and moose. (and other wild animals) so if you want to be part of my fuitful colony you need to be responsible and be able to fallow my laws that govern all!!!!!!!!

byates - - I live in a rural area, nearest town of over 10K is an hours drive away thru open farm land. Big hunting area, so there are a lot of guns along the way. Large farm equipment, hard to climb up on and heavy enough to crush small cars. Several swamps, Zed stuck in the mud would be an easy target. Anyone consider that some groups might be considering using Zed as a method to reduce population pressure? Pass laws to disarm the people, create policies to concentrate populations, then seed Zed's in the population centers.

Jack of Blades, when you talk about 10, 20, or 100 zeds, I doubt any sort of body armour could protect you from an attack. It would be better to have light armour on high risk parts of your body (i.e. arms, neck or face) than to cover yourself entirely with heavy sports equipment or body armour. Also I think when Mr. July said to attack the spine he meant go for the back of the neck, not go through the torso to hit the spine. That would probably be just as much of a sword sticker as getting stuck in the skull. When you stab into meat or pull out, it has a tendency to stick to a blade and would require a lot of force to remove it. Although I do agree that decayed flesh would be easier to penetrate than living and therefor a ghoul may be easier to take down than it is imagined (depending on how fresh they are, eww). I also would have to agree with Copping1000's idea that killing a Zombie as early as possible would probably save countless others from 'Zombification'.
However, as ambitious as many of these plans are, caution must be the number one concern when executing them. Like Alicestar said: "..never place yourself in more danger than is needed to.." What's the point in trying to kill the undead if you act too rashly and become one yourself.
Personally I wouldn't put any faith into explosives when dealing with Zeds. Although destroying as many ghouls as possible is important, keeping yourself and the group you're apart of alive is infinitely more so.

toomin, you are entirely correct when you say that no armour (barring, say, a shark suit) would protect you, and i do agree that lighter , bite-proof armour is the way to go, if only so avoiding zeds is easier. my point was that simply having arm coverings is not enough. Also, mr july MAY have meant that the spine at the back of the neck is a good place to strike, however, if that was so, why not go for a full decapitation? There would be absolutely no advantage gained from a stab through the spine at the neck. In fact, it would take longer. In his own words, "I don't know how many of you have handled a sword but shove it in to a coconut and try to pull it out quick enough to eliminate another coconut lunging for you neck." if we just swung the sword at the back of the neck, the spine would be severed, the head removed, and would still have momentum to spin and grapple the other lunging "coconut'. I just dont see any advantage gained from it, whether it is speed or lethality-wise.
DustinEchos104: i think that the easiest way to summarize offence against zombies is be careful and thourough, use mass traps/burnings/tower methods to take out bulk in an area but what is the most important is making sure that each and every one of those downed zeds is actually good and dead, burn the lot of them, esp. the heads, and making sure you find all the ones in places where they couldn't come after you, like the people who hung themselves after they got bite then reanimated hanging from a ceiling without any thought processes on how to get down or the ones caring family members lock in the basement hoping they will get better. i plan on setting up a few bases with massive gasolined trenches that we draw zombies to and then burn them after they fall in coming at us, once we take care of that, break up into 4 man sweep teams to go though everything with fastidious attention to detail, this is the reason why trained units, such as ex-military, will have the highest survival rate, they take finish everything down to the chunks of zombie left in the mouth of the dead dog that tried to eat it
roxas33: Well me being a student in spec ops and general millitary tatics and stratagy I would first do some recon followed by a choper flyover to anounce to any survivors to evacuate or go below street level then a brutal artillary barage to damage or destroy as many buildings as possable to reduce house to house fighting. After that a massive infantry force will enter with whatever weapons we have. Secure the perimter and then below streets. Followed by a building of a huge wall and secure the a 20 feet clear vision in other words make sure that there is nothing that can obstruct vision of a target.
Z13: My house would be one of the best places to stay for a Z-invasion. I have 1 double barreled shotgun, 4 pistols with over 1000 rounds in my house. And I also have an assult rifle with around 5000 rounds of ammo. We also have around 3 months of canned food and water to last. Hundreds of candles and matches. Not to mention, I have like 5 game systems, and if the power goes out, We have 4 seperate Nintendo DS's with portable recharging stations that rely on batteries. We also have around 10 flashlights and around 500 diffrent batteries in my house. Im pretty much set ^.^
Spraymachine: My zombie offensive would go like this for fast-ish zombies: My zombie hunter partner and I would use a bike as it doesn't require alot of maintenance, and is quite if you need to escape. If Z-day comes and I am able, I will definitely be making one of these. It is a light weight swiveling office chair mounted on a tandem bike with foot pegs on the rear wheel.
. The "gunner" pedals with the "front" man to the destination. When they lure enough zombies, they will quickly stop, the gunner will swivel his seat around, get his rifle out, then the front will start to pedal again. The shooter would carefully take aim with the (non)silenced Ruger 10/22 .22 caliber rimfire rifle, and make some undead dead. If the zombies prove to move slow (1-2 mph), you could avoid the 2 person contraption and just leapfrog using mountain bikes (1 person fires while others retreat). If they moved at 2mph, you could leapfrog with 100y intervals giving the the person about 1.5 minutes to reload magazines and prepare for his turn to snipe from the same distance. With a 2 man fire team, it can work, but it would be difficult to reload and start shooting in such a short period of time. If you had 2 sniper/spotter teams, the spotters could reload while the sniper is shooting, making the leapfrog intervals shorter........ Or you could just have 3 of your friends in the back of a pickup truck shoot zombies trailing behind.
Hallaman: Alicestar, thats a good plan but slayer is right, you have to have a retreat plan. This is a basic rule of strategy, if there is something that you think the enemy wouldn't do, but would destroy you if they did do, you plan for it. Not that running from a zombie horde and running into another would destroy you, but it would be a royal pain to have to run from both. What you need to do is not set the fuse and have a safe spot a certain distance away, but light the fuse and run like hell, but quietly, and along a predetermined route that has a few people to keep the zombies away from it back to a mini safe house thats more of a rest stop where you catch your breath and head back to base.
Anyway, enough advice, my zombie plan is simple(the greatest things in life often are),there is a large library in my city, like 3 or 4 stories large, that i would take refuge in, besides having something to read, i would have plenty of fuel if i needed it. Once i have the library, i would gather survivors, mainly my friends and family, gather as many supplies as i could,barricade the doors, destroy the elevator and stairs from the first to second floor, and wait it out, occasionally making supply/kill zombie trips into the city.

I think that reclaiming rural areas first would be a good idea. Start at a farm house or something and go from there. Move on to little towns, medium sized towns, cities, eventualy the world. Start small, that is the plan for me.

Alright, what we want here is to search and destroy every single zombie in an area so it can be rendered inhabitable. You know, you don't have to plan some kind of army-versus-army kind of war here. Might is not always right. Cook up ingenious traps that would be able to kill zombies by the hundreds instead of arming every able-bodied survivor and launching a huge military offensive. Here, think about this. Take a giant, sturdy wooden box that can house at least 100 zombies. Get a box made of bulletproof glass with some holes in it and put one of your guys there. Have him/her start screaming like hell or crank up 5 radios playing heavy metal songs (of course, you have to have that guy wear earplugs). When there are enough zombies there, get him/her out through the roof or something, lock the zombies in, and set them on fire. As supposed to training 50 or so surivors to kill and have them massacre undead by the hundreds, this would be a wiser choice. You will need only to risk one life as supposed to 50. Also, no ammo or supplies will be wasted here. Just some wood, nails and flammable objects. It also takes less time, because you only need to construct a giant wooden crate, as supposed to training everybody to kill.
Once you have destroyed all undead in an area, I recommend burning all dead bodies, turned or not. This will not only kill the zombie in case they are still alive, but also kill parasite that is housed in the corpse. Clean any speck of blood or bodily fluid in case there is still any parasites in there.
Now the most important part: prevention. Just because all the zombies are dead and burnt to a crisp, do not let down your guard. Someone might've missed a spot in which a parasite is still living in, and some clueless 5-year-old might lick it off the floor thinking it's apple juice and turn. You will have to live as if there is still zombies outside banging on your door every night. Sleep with a sub-machinegun under your pillow and an escape route that you dream about every night. Set up night watches, and, if possible, set up some kind of wall around your newly established village (think "I Am Legend"). Even if the whole world has been sterilized of undead, live as if they are crawling the streets at night, or living in caves, planning some kind of comeback. Do not go into an isolated area alone and unarmed, without method of communication. You never know where they will strike next. Live with that readiness--with that fear--for at least a year after the outbreak was over.
Again, do not let down your guard. NEVER LET DOWN YOUR GUARD.

Id like to point out some thing here,, If you asume as I do that the Zombie uprising will come from some kinde of virus (man made or other) there is an inportant side note to consider. viruses tend to grow stronger and as humans on the run tend to gett weaker (lack of food/sleep/) isnt it possible that after some time the virus will start spreading more easely say... throu the air..? for all we know it migth all ready be airborn just that our bodys at there curent state are strong enuff for us not to notis, mabe its only now in our prime health that we nead full boddy contakt with the virus for it to spread?.
Yes all of the above is just speculation but I think its wise to consider stuff like this as it migth turn your thougts to packin a couple of extra vitamins in your survival pack.

Jack of blades- I'm sorry, but i just don't get what you mean. What do you mean by "viruses tend to grow stronger and as humans on the run tend to gett weaker (lack of food/sleep/)" i mean, yes, energy wise, humans do lose energy without eating or sleeping, but very rarely does that effect there ability to combat disease. However, while a virus may mutate, by the point it has, most people may have grown a "resistense" to the weakened, airborne version. Unless, when you say airborne, you mean that a zed sneezes on you, but that is something for another day. I just fail to understand the point you are trying to convey.

I think what he's saying is that what if the zombie parasite is airborne, kinda like influenza or chickenpox. I have always thought of a zombie parasite almost like HIV or rabies. You know, contact of bodily fluid. But I also want to point out something. Not every person's immune system are rigged the same way. Some may be very weak, while some can resist Solanum, the T-Virus, and Malaria at the same time without even noticing. Sure, vitamins would help, but a parasite that strong, what with the reanimation and not needing any other major organs but the brain, I doubt a little Vitamin C would help with that sort of thing. We'll just have to count on the way our parents made us, a la "I Am Legend." If it is transeferred by contact, we have a chance. If it is airborne, more than three-quarters of would-be undead hunters or survivors will turn and die.

Just for a side note were alking about the generic zombie virus, IE get bit ot cut by a Z and you get infected. If that ever happend where it was airborne we could call it GVA (G Virus Air). But for right now were discusing the common zombie virus. Also For my zombie killing spree idea I would get a H2 hummer and reiforce it with a chain link fence on the windows. Then I would make it so you could fill it up with gas from the inside and I would add a second tank that was on the inside of the car (Hence being able to fill it up from the inside) so that tank would drain in while the other was getting used. Then I would arm everyone with Semi Auto Assult Riffles (G3, M21, ect) and we would drive around, and make alot of noise. Whenever we got enough Gs on our tail we would stop, pick them off, and repeat for about 4 hours a day.

I honestly don't see much of a "offense against zombies" at least not during the apocolype that most of us here are thinking of. There is survival. You fight what you have to in order to make it and, depending on your mindset, your companions to make it to the next day. I am not in the military so I won't be apart of any governmental fight-back and I don't plan on joining some vigilante or mercenary free-runners army made up of citizens to fight the dead en mass. I will destroy the undead that I must in order to survive and ensure the safety of the ones I am charged with caring for, not jump into some large scale "war" if you want to call it that because it will be one sided. The dead won't see it as war. All they'll do is do what they have been "programmed" to do. I will probably do my share of killing don't get me wrong but as for helping to "clear out" the infestation, count me out until the numbers drop drastically.

This is true. Survival should always take precedence over an all out war. The only time one should consider open battle is if supllies run low and the zombie infested area is navigable and the threat somwhat mitigable. Once again leave your most valuable assests at the "headquarters", use a "shoot and loot" policy, engage the threat just enough to incap, and keep it moving, worry about more accurate shooting when u gotta defend the homefront.

After reading up on the Zombies, all bodily funtions are transferred to the brain, so follow these experimental Anti-Zombie attack manuveres:
Decapitation. The virus is transferred by saliva, and even if you're the living dead, you can't drool from your fingertips( for those suffering Paranoia, dump the zombie in acid or obliterate the body)
High-Calibre bullets. Deasert eagles, High-end Sniper-Rifles, hell, even some machine guns have the capability to blowing off limbs, so aim for the head and BOOM! buh-bye Zombie Boy
And one more thing. Although there are guns without a rending quality to their bullets, some make up with the sheer number of bullets fired that they can shear a body in half.

My plan for taking back our world is simple, start from your settlement and work your way outward in waves taking more land and secureing it as you go. The weapon i would equip my troops with is the AK-47 on semi-auto. It rarely jams and is very easy to use. I would use a old movement of lineing up your men in a straight line and postioning another row standing behind them and fireing volly after volly into a horde, in the rear there would be men who would race back and forth from the frontline to supplies giving the troops ammo and whatever. There would also be reserve men to take the place of someone if they had to rest. Also the groups would be drilled so they can pull into a square if they are flanked. When on campain men are drooped off if zombies are found in a area at a ratio of 2 men per 1 zombie seen. They will join the rear when done. Transport will be buses designed like the one off Land of the Dead and Dawn of the Dead remake.

To fight a zombie one must first study their enemy, I recommend watching a lot of zombie movies
Take a self defense class to understand something about martial arts there are many different styles
Buy a gun if possible and learn to use it
if Z-day doesn't happen then you will be safe from other humans
Try to stay in shape as this will help in any situation
Most zombies die if they are decapitated
If this doesn't kill a zombie it should slow them down and blind it
some zombies may be stronger than others next think about armour to avoid taking damage
remember it must be bite proof not bullet proof
Tips & Tricks to remember

Zombies, contrary to popular belief, do not horde. They congregate. Each head is alone. Ramming the horde with an over-sized pipe bomb will do nothing to scatter them. All it will do is make a good-sized hole in the horde. What will work, however, is hijacking a fuel tanker and driving by a horde and dousing. Drive off a bit, and run in circles 20 feet around the horde "edge." Mmmm... Barbecue... Wearing Kevlar arm and leg covers, tights and a gas mask will work wonders on your life expectancy.
Zombies may be killable by killing the heart. Swords are death traps in the head, but trench spikes are useful. Get a .22 rimfire rifle and shoot at the head. The bullet will bounce around in the brain case and liquidize the brain.
Follow the No-Waste strategy. Once a place is robbed of all supplies, break apart the building part by part. For example, bricks in the wall are used to widen yours, wood frames for firewood, and anything inside for decoration (paint chips glued together on a wall makes for an interesting paint job.

Before strategy comes preparation. When a zombie is killed, body fluids fly. Make sure all openings to the body are covered. An old fashioned gas mask would work best since the whole face is covered - no oxygen attachment would be necessary for this purpose. You can find one at an army surplus store or online if you think ahead. Also, bite proofing yourself is essential for zombie combat. Forget chain mail, Plate mail, or any kind of outdated non-accessible armor. Think sports. Any sports authority or sporting goods store will have numerous pads that can serve as bite-proof. Plastic and leather is light and flexible, so it works the best. You don't need to cover your body, either. Two hard plastic forearm guards can work wonders. Consider you go weeks without brushing and are decaying at the rate of, well, a walking dead person - bashing in a zombie's teeth while they try to lunge at you may not kill them but save you from zombification.
Now, How to kill a zombie: They may in fact be killable by means of the heart or other methods but safety first - assume the head or spine needs to be destroyed. Gunman aim for the upper skull. Face shots may knock down zombies but will not damage the brain. People who prefer blunt weapons may be surprised to hear that the back of the neck is a more efficient target then the skull. Skulls are meant to take blunt trauma. A brain is harder to destroy then you think. Take out the spine if you can. Swordsman - do the same. The skull is a death trap. Your sword WILL get stuck if you dig it in far enough to kill the brain. I don't know how many of you have handled a sword but shove it in to a coconut and try to pull it out quick enough to eliminate another coconut lunging for you neck. It won't work - again, aim for the spine.
Strategy. Zombies horde. We don't know this for a fact, but all our assumptions are based on the zombie myth; and if they do in fact horde, then close combat is not preferable. A sound tactic would be to surround the horde and confuse the beasts. They will, no doubt, attack what attacks them, so create four fronts dedicated to luring the zombies back and forth while their numbers slowly decrease. They will not have the common sense or observational skill to see that their numbers are thinning and that they are accomplishing nothing. If for some reason they do not take the bait make sure your attack was heard, not seen. That way you can quickly run to another front. Your blunt/sharp weapons are key for movement. You will run in to the occasional stray zombie and rather than draw attention take out his spine and move on. Allow his moans, but make no noise yourself. In the noise of their own steps yours will not draw attention, but screams of terror may.
NOTE: If you are seen and must retreat - never retreat to the safe house or another front. Run in the opposite direction with your comrades and make sure no horde can see you before you double back. Also, the entire colony should not hunt at once. 50% should remain at the safe house for defense and management. Do not risk survivors with helpful skills in battle. Only use those who can mentally handle the task and who are selfless enough to sacrifice their place for your survival.

ZEROFLY: Actually, doubling back won't do anything. They can smell the living from miles away, and they seem to always know where you are. So you'd just be burning precious energy for nothing. Instead, do the smart thing and just head back home. Kill all the Zombies you find along the way, and do it quick. Remember, if you go the long way, you're not only burning energy, but you're also burning daylight. That's not good for anyone. Nobody wants to be stuck in the dark, tired, scared, and fighting Zombies. Remember, you have a brain, they don't. You should probably use it.
REPLY FROM FREB1RD57-We don't know if they can smell the living from miles because there has never been a zombie uprising.
Response: You make too many assumptions about the zombies you are dealing with. We know in this circumstance it is a magic zombie, but its qualities are to be observed before committing to any plan. Assume they do not have this advanced smell and you lead a horde of zombies that would have randomly walked on in another direction to your colony. Would the other survivors think twice about throwing you to them for food?

they dont!..its either virus that kills and brings the dead back to life or like the ones in 28 weeks and 28 days later..they bring extreme eggression that drives them to kill those who are not infected.
Reply from 13th.Casualty - Well I always said to assume the worst. I always think that zombies would be like the "I Am Legend" Darkseekers without the weakness to UV light. You know, superhuman strength, speed, senses, intellect, can jump 50 feet into the air...the works. Be prepared for that and you're prepared for anything.
Repy from smilerwithaknife: Actually 13th Casualty, according to the original novel by Richard Matheson that the movie was based on, the "Darkseekers" are vampires, not zombies. That's why they react to the sunlight and are intelligent and fast. Granted, Matheson's novel did heavily influence the Godfather of the zombie genre, George A. Romero, but technically it would be misguided thinking to prepare to fight the type of zombie you described.
Reply from UnUndead: The vampires in "I Am Legend" aren't fast or intelligent. If you read the book, you would read several references to how an old friend of Neville's is smart enough to talk, while the rest act like animals. While they are called vampires, they're actually very similar to zombies.
13th.Casualty: I like to think of Rage Zombies as The Hulk+A Pack Hunter Animal turned zombie. 'Nuff said.

ZS207-I would use Sherman's method from the Civil War-America's Civil War-on the large population centers after I have extracted all supplies.The Scorched Earth Policy!!!!!Once a place has been depleted of supplies, burn it down!!!!!!!!!!!That sounds very entertaining, doesn't it! But that is NOT my full plan.I live 200 ft from a very large American city with at least 7 million people in it, not counting the surrounding area.I am the only believer in this area.In this city, there are two points of interests-the Philadelphia penitentiary, and the National guard outpost.Philly Penitentiary is a square structure with a circle-like building with arm-like buildings.Outfitted with watchtowers, this place held some of America's most dangerous scum.Some went insane, and it is said to be haunted.more later...
The National Guard outpost is stocked.The national guard would have probably been killed or beaten off by then.They have tanks...The building itself is a castle...Literally!!!! Built by America's government during our revolutionary war (1775-1789).
If the settling idea doesn't work, Me and My Group would go to the country and make a fort.We would use the old Israel method and make bricks out of water, dirt, and hay.but before then to make the most of gas, we would clear the road and set up traps for humans, zombies, or whatever falls in them.The brick method is old and reliable but to be safe i would make the walls on the outside four bricks wide.This would take some time, but we would have 3 command centers in the city
1.Labor Pool / R&R-Everybody would be encouraged to put in work time to work on the base in the country.In return, they would earn some relaxation time.
2.Patrol Base-This is the base for parols and intel missions.
3.Command Center-This is the place where all the orders are given from.Representatives from the other bases would arrive every week, earlier for important and urgent news.
Once the country baseis up and running, we would start to plant foods.Each base would have a mini farm too.Everything being transported with buses, due to the nearby bus depot.The leftover buses will be used as barricades.More Later...

Slayer123: Yeah...I got my town planned out; I'd set up one super fortified stronghold in our library, and stock it with ammo and weapons, pull up a ladder, destroy the stairs, and in case of emergency use the fire escape...and pray you don't get caught...if you survive I'd prolly get a hunting group, do a quick vehicular sweep, then pillage the town (kill, steal, burn).

Stand on the propane truck and start the ambush by drawing attention to yourself (yell, scream, shoot) and draw the horde, then fall back to the safe point. the horde should all gather around your last known position, i.e., the huge bomb you just made. Light the fuse and make yourself the smallest, flattest object on earth and as tight to the ground and wall as possible and exhale so your lungs don't burst when the concussion passes you!! P.S., the heat from the blast should incinerate everything within about 1\4 mile radius, so don't be in that area when that happens.

When the dead rise, you should always have a backup plan; say the explosives don't blow, or they blow too late, you have a horde of blazing funeral pyres slowly coming towards you, setting fire to whatever they touch (possibly). You need a retreat plan, and a fortified place to hold off the following horde days later...

See, Slayer, here's the thing: when you leave the truck after the horde sees you, you are running directly away from the horde using the truck to break their line of sight. So like I said, they gather at your last known location (the truck). Yeah, you should always have a backup method of detonation; be it trip-line or pressure sensor or motion detector (hand-held radios work good for remote detonation). The point is that you never place yourself in more danger than is needed to accomplish the mission; meaning you need to disappear as soon as the horde starts to flock in your direction. Use any means to break their line of sight, be it trees, hills, houses,vehicles or any other object to mask your escape from the tanker truck. And Slayer, if the bomb does cause a BLEVE (boiling liquid expanding vapor explosion)or fuel air bomb (see the movie outbreak), trust me, there's not going to be a anything moving in the 1/4 mile blast radius, this is as close as you will get to a nuke in a post apocalyptic world.

In the survival guide, under the sense section it is pointed out that zombies have a possible sixth sense, giving them increased basic senses... (hearing,sight,SMELL) you cannot guarantee that they would flock to the point...maybe they detected your departure and slowly follow after...but I do like the bomb idea...if not wipe out the horde, it'll render them massively dead.

Like the guide, I offer tools for the toolbox. I put a lot of faith in the human race; but as far as common sense goes, we are found wanting. I have over 10 years in tactical fields such as US Army Intelligence, communications, and force recon as well as invasion and threat security for the Department of Energy. My plan is to try and set-up several well supplied safe houses in the immediate area, keep them all minimally manned at all times and well stocked. The idea behind this is that if you are constantly on the move from safe house to safe house dropping off supplies, you can literally do circles with the undead following behind you the whole time. Meanwhile the hunting crews would decimate their numbers daily. After some time barricade the entire area with overturned tractor trailers then wait for them to come to you and destroy them. after that you can cut holes in the trailers to kill the zombies that surround you barricade at a comfortable pace. the wall would also serve as a barricade against any hostile living forces that may want to take my town from me, they would be stocked with ammunition, food, explosives, napalm and armored guards. The only risky part would be venturing out of the safety of the town, which wouldn't be necessary after about a year because it would be a self sustaining society.

Before strategy comes preparation. When a zombie is killed, body fluids fly. Make sure all openings to the body are covered. An old fashioned gas mask would work best since the whole face is covered - no oxygen attachment would be necessary for this purpose. You can find one at an army surplus store or online if you think ahead. Also, bite proofing yourself is essential for zombie combat. Forget chain mail, Plate mail, or any kind of outdated non-accessible armor. Think sports. Any sports authority or sporting goods store will have numerous pads that can serve as bite-proof. Plastic and leather is light and flexible, so it works the best. You don't need to cover your body, either. Two hard plastic forearm guards can work wonders. Consider you go weeks without brushing and are decaying at the rate of, well, a walking dead person - bashing in a zombie's teeth while they try to lunge at you may not kill them but save you from zombification.
Now, How to kill a zombie: They may in fact be killable by means of the heart or other methods but safety first - assume the head or spine needs to be destroyed. Gunman aim for the upper skull. Face shots may knock down zombies but will not damage the brain. People who prefer blunt weapons may be surprised to hear that the back of the neck is a more efficient target then the skull. Skulls are meant to take blunt trauma. A brain is harder to destroy then you think. Take out the spine if you can. Swordsman - do the same. The skull is a death trap. Your sword WILL get stuck if you dig it in far enough to kill the brain. I don't know how many of you have handled a sword but shove it in to a coconut and try to pull it out quick enough to eliminate another coconut lunging for you neck. It won't work - again, aim for the spine.
Strategy. Zombies horde. We don't know this for a fact, but all our assumptions are based on the zombie myth; and if they do in fact horde, then close combat is not preferable. A sound tactic would be to surround the horde and confuse the beasts. They will, no doubt, attack what attacks them, so create four fronts dedicated to luring the zombies back and forth while their numbers slowly decrease. They will not have the common sense or observational skill to see that their numbers are thinning and that they are accomplishing nothing. If for some reason they do not take the bait make sure your attack was heard, not seen. That way you can quickly run to another front. Your blunt/sharp weapons are key for movement. You will run in to the occasional stray zombie and rather than draw attention take out his spine and move on. Allow his moans, but make no noise yourself. In the noise of their own steps yours will not draw attention, but screams of terror may.
NOTE: If you are seen and must retreat - never retreat to the safe house or another front. Run in the opposite direction with your comrades and make sure no horde can see you before you double back. Also, the entire colony should not hunt at once. 50% should remain at the safe house for defense and management. Do not risk survivors with helpful skills in battle. Only use those who can mentally handle the task and who are selfless enough to sacrifice their place for your survival.

ZEROFLY: Actually, doubling back won't do anything. They can smell the living from miles away, and they seem to always know where you are. So you'd just be burning precious energy for nothing. Instead, do the smart thing and just head back home. Kill all the Zombies you find along the way, and do it quick. Remember, if you go the long way, you're not only burning energy, but you're also burning daylight. That's not good for anyone. Nobody wants to be stuck in the dark, tired, scared, and fighting Zombies. Remember, you have a brain, they don't. You should probably use it.

Response: You make too many assumptions about the zombies you are dealing with. We know in this circumstance it is a magic zombie, but its qualities are to be observed before committing to any plan. Assume they do not have this advanced smell and you lead a horde of zombies that would have randomly walked on in another direction to your colony. Would the other survivors think twice about throwing you to them for food?

Repy from smilerwithaknife: Actually 13th Casualty, according to the original novel by Richard Matheson that the movie was based on, the "Darkseekers" are vampires, not zombies. That's why they react to the sunlight and are intelligent and fast. Granted, Matheson's novel did heavily influence the Godfather of the zombie genre, George A. Romero, but technically it would be misguided thinking to prepare to fight the type of zombie you described.

If you read the book, you would read several references to how an old friend of Neville's is smart enough to talk, while the rest act like animals. If the settling idea doesn't work, Me and My Group would go to the country and make a fort.We would use the old Israel method and make bricks out of water, dirt, and hay.but before then to make the most of gas, we would clear the road and set up traps for humans, zombies, or whatever falls in them.The brick method is old and reliable but to be safe i would make the walls on the outside four bricks wide.This would take some time, but we would have 3 command centers in the city
1.Labor Pool / R&R-Everybody would be encouraged to put in work time to work on the base in the country.In return, they would earn some relaxation time.
2.Patrol Base-This is the base for parols and intel missions.
3.Command Center-This is the place where all the orders are given from.Representatives from the other bases would arrive every week, earlier for important and urgent news.

you need to go on the offensive as soon as you see the first zombie. Remember a zombie killed at the beginning of the outbreak could mean it doesn't infect someone later who infects someone later ect ect.

First off, a slow zombie cannot be killed by an attack to the heart, as all organs (including the heart) have, after necrosis, been rendered inert. So called "rage zombies"
(28 days, 28 weeks) however, can be killed by an attack to the heart, because, for all intents and purposes, rage infected humans are still alive, so to speak, not having undergone the same process of necrosis as Romero zombies or Solanum zombies. Second, Mr July, it is true that the spinal column is an effective place to strike, as it would cripple a zombie. But remember this: while a skull is hard to penetrate, for a blade to reach a living mans spinal column would have to travel through the ribs, the lungs, the intestines, etc. while a blade through necrotic flesh WOULD get through, whether it retains enough force to sever the spinal column is another matter. Also, you use the example of a blade in a coconut, which is very true, and yet you seem to forget that the torso is filled with organs and ribs, and would any normal person find it any easier to remove a blade from the ribs of a zombie then the skull. If you will let me use an analogy, imagine sticking a sword inside a balloon filled with a full skeletal structure, organs, etc. and then try to pull it out quick enough to eliminate another meat-sack lunging for you neck. It won't work - again, don't aim for the spine, unless you are very confident on your skills. If you're just an average Joe, don't go for it. Plus, even if you took out the spine with a sword, you would be close enough for a bite, as the head will still be active, lacking the lethal attack to the head. This isn't even talking about how loud a zed moans. Even if they were crippled, they could call hundreds more to your location. Even if you were long gone, that could pose a significant threat. The brain would still be the best bet for a kill. Sure, these might be "magic" zombies, but the human brain is still an effective foci, besides the heart, of course. however, if you were able to "kill" a zombie with anything besides a head-shot, it would fail to be a zombie as it is commonly known. Third, July, why would you go without covering the rest of your body? Sure, arm coverings may protect your appendages, and they might be able to survive a bite, but zeds don't just bite, they gnaw, they pull, they drag you off your feet. Would arm coverings protect you from one zed? Sure. Five zeds? Maybe. Ten? Twenty? A hundred? I don't think so. However, all of this is just speculation, so believe all you want. I can only hope we all live in a free country. All i ask is you heed my advice. i have a plan for a community that is mostly in a circle on a hill right next door to my house with woods to the back and a pond on one side down the hill well my idea was of coarse simple wooden walls at ground lvl but for my main offensive from roof top to roof top have rope bridges with marksmen on top with anything from guns bows catapults or just throwing rocks to pass the time you know you just can run out of rocks
for power and lights there are several key points for windmills there will be a blacksmith and medical buildings on the inner circle and a large double door trapping gates at the front

I would get riot pants (They are fortified against attack for the SWAT teams), and a riot jacket, and a riot helmet. Then I would get my 2 katana and work my way through the zombies. The most basic katana strike of Eshin-Ryu-Iado is supprisingly a decapitating one. Most people say that decapitation isn't good enough but if you decapitate them they cant moan and you can just crush theyre head with a bludgeon during your, "After Sweep".

since i live in lansing MI. this is a good plan. first i would gather my freinds and family and we would head out in tractors and large trucks. then we would head up north to muskegon. to get supplies also there we would take the WOLVERINE (one of those small freighter boats, or mabe a large car boat) up to upper pennicula. take a stop at a port to pick up more supplies. then its off to isle royal. once there we would set up a camp. after several of days of setup we would try to gather more people. then when we're all settled in, we will start chopping trees. once we have enough trees we would start to build our castle!!!! we would mostly live off of fish so we would only need a few cows for milk. but ofcourse we would bring all 16 of my rifles and shotguns! =) this will take about 4-5 months to build this giant fortress. if we didn't bring the trucks it would take several years. so this is good. then when ever we absolutly need to we will make raids on towns for supplies. also i think we might be above the frozen line. which is good. plus when the president needs to nuke someplace, i won't get hurt by it. also we will have two dogs for anyone to try and enter my village fortress. it will be a dog sniffer test followed imediatly by a vilsual inspection. my cats can also come along too if they want. but we will make our goods and use furs as currency! this is because they will be a VERY saught after cammodity! also traps and other items will be bartered with. guns and ammo will be the second most sought after items. if any of you will want to join me, the base will be on the west side about 300 feet form the shore. the main reason that i chose to colonize this island is because it is in the middle of a terridying great lake and there is no people there!!! (except for a research center) there are no building there. and the only living creatures there are deer and moose. (and other wild animals) so if you want to be part of my fuitful colony you need to be responsible and be able to fallow my laws that govern all!!!!!!!!

byates - - I live in a rural area, nearest town of over 10K is an hours drive away thru open farm land. Big hunting area, so there are a lot of guns along the way. Large farm equipment, hard to climb up on and heavy enough to crush small cars. Several swamps, Zed stuck in the mud would be an easy target. Anyone consider that some groups might be considering using Zed as a method to reduce population pressure? Pass laws to disarm the people, create policies to concentrate populations, then seed Zed's in the population centers.

Jack of Blades, when you talk about 10, 20, or 100 zeds, I doubt any sort of body armour could protect you from an attack. It would be better to have light armour on high risk parts of your body (i.e. arms, neck or face) than to cover yourself entirely with heavy sports equipment or body armour. Also I think when Mr. July said to attack the spine he meant go for the back of the neck, not go through the torso to hit the spine. That would probably be just as much of a sword sticker as getting stuck in the skull. When you stab into meat or pull out, it has a tendency to stick to a blade and would require a lot of force to remove it. Although I do agree that decayed flesh would be easier to penetrate than living and therefor a ghoul may be easier to take down than it is imagined (depending on how fresh they are, eww). I also would have to agree with Copping1000's idea that killing a Zombie as early as possible would probably save countless others from 'Zombification'.
However, as ambitious as many of these plans are, caution must be the number one concern when executing them. Like Alicestar said: "..never place yourself in more danger than is needed to.." What's the point in trying to kill the undead if you act too rashly and become one yourself.
Personally I wouldn't put any faith into explosives when dealing with Zeds. Although destroying as many ghouls as possible is important, keeping yourself and the group you're apart of alive is infinitely more so.

toomin, you are entirely correct when you say that no armour (barring, say, a shark suit) would protect you, and i do agree that lighter , bite-proof armour is the way to go, if only so avoiding zeds is easier. my point was that simply having arm coverings is not enough. Also, mr july MAY have meant that the spine at the back of the neck is a good place to strike, however, if that was so, why not go for a full decapitation? There would be absolutely no advantage gained from a stab through the spine at the neck. In fact, it would take longer. In his own words, "I don't know how many of you have handled a sword but shove it in to a coconut and try to pull it out quick enough to eliminate another coconut lunging for you neck." if we just swung the sword at the back of the neck, the spine would be severed, the head removed, and would still have momentum to spin and grapple the other lunging "coconut'. I just dont see any advantage gained from it, whether it is speed or lethality-wise.
DustinEchos104: i think that the easiest way to summarize offence against zombies is be careful and thourough, use mass traps/burnings/tower methods to take out bulk in an area but what is the most important is making sure that each and every one of those downed zeds is actually good and dead, burn the lot of them, esp. the heads, and making sure you find all the ones in places where they couldn't come after you, like the people who hung themselves after they got bite then reanimated hanging from a ceiling without any thought processes on how to get down or the ones caring family members lock in the basement hoping they will get better. i plan on setting up a few bases with massive gasolined trenches that we draw zombies to and then burn them after they fall in coming at us, once we take care of that, break up into 4 man sweep teams to go though everything with fastidious attention to detail, this is the reason why trained units, such as ex-military, will have the highest survival rate, they take finish everything down to the chunks of zombie left in the mouth of the dead dog that tried to eat it
roxas33: Well me being a student in spec ops and general millitary tatics and stratagy I would first do some recon followed by a choper flyover to anounce to any survivors to evacuate or go below street level then a brutal artillary barage to damage or destroy as many buildings as possable to reduce house to house fighting. After that a massive infantry force will enter with whatever weapons we have. Secure the perimter and then below streets. Followed by a building of a huge wall and secure the a 20 feet clear vision in other words make sure that there is nothing that can obstruct vision of a target.
Z13: My house would be one of the best places to stay for a Z-invasion. I have 1 double barreled shotgun, 4 pistols with over 1000 rounds in my house. And I also have an assult rifle with around 5000 rounds of ammo. We also have around 3 months of canned food and water to last. Hundreds of candles and matches. Not to mention, I have like 5 game systems, and if the power goes out, We have 4 seperate Nintendo DS's with portable recharging stations that rely on batteries. We also have around 10 flashlights and around 500 diffrent batteries in my house. Im pretty much set ^.^
Spraymachine: My zombie offensive would go like this for fast-ish zombies: My zombie hunter partner and I would use a bike as it doesn't require alot of maintenance, and is quite if you need to escape. If Z-day comes and I am able, I will definitely be making one of these. It is a light weight swiveling office chair mounted on a tandem bike with foot pegs on the rear wheel.
Hallaman: Alicestar, thats a good plan but slayer is right, you have to have a retreat plan. This is a basic rule of strategy, if there is something that you think the enemy wouldn't do, but would destroy you if they did do, you plan for it. Not that running from a zombie horde and running into another would destroy you, but it would be a royal pain to have to run from both. What you need to do is not set the fuse and have a safe spot a certain distance away, but light the fuse and run like hell, but quietly, and along a predetermined route that has a few people to keep the zombies away from it back to a mini safe house thats more of a rest stop where you catch your breath and head back to base.
Anyway, enough advice, my zombie plan is simple(the greatest things in life often are),there is a large library in my city, like 3 or 4 stories large, that i would take refuge in, besides having something to read, i would have plenty of fuel if i needed it. Once i have the library, i would gather survivors, mainly my friends and family, gather as many supplies as i could,barricade the doors, destroy the elevator and stairs from the first to second floor, and wait it out, occasionally making supply/kill zombie trips into the city.

I think that reclaiming rural areas first would be a good idea. Start at a farm house or something and go from there. Move on to little towns, medium sized towns, cities, eventualy the world. Start small, that is the plan for me.

Alright, what we want here is to search and destroy every single zombie in an area so it can be rendered inhabitable. You know, you don't have to plan some kind of army-versus-army kind of war here. Might is not always right. Cook up ingenious traps that would be able to kill zombies by the hundreds instead of arming every able-bodied survivor and launching a huge military offensive. Here, think about this. Take a giant, sturdy wooden box that can house at least 100 zombies. Get a box made of bulletproof glass with some holes in it and put one of your guys there. Have him/her start screaming like hell or crank up 5 radios playing heavy metal songs (of course, you have to have that guy wear earplugs). When there are enough zombies there, get him/her out through the roof or something, lock the zombies in, and set them on fire. As supposed to training 50 or so surivors to kill and have them massacre undead by the hundreds, this would be a wiser choice. You will need only to risk one life as supposed to 50. Also, no ammo or supplies will be wasted here. Just some wood, nails and flammable objects. It also takes less time, because you only need to construct a giant wooden crate, as supposed to training everybody to kill.
Once you have destroyed all undead in an area, I recommend burning all dead bodies, turned or not. This will not only kill the zombie in case they are still alive, but also kill parasite that is housed in the corpse. Clean any speck of blood or bodily fluid in case there is still any parasites in there.
Now the most important part: prevention. Just because all the zombies are dead and burnt to a crisp, do not let down your guard. Someone might've missed a spot in which a parasite is still living in, and some clueless 5-year-old might lick it off the floor thinking it's apple juice and turn. You will have to live as if there is still zombies outside banging on your door every night. Sleep with a sub-machinegun under your pillow and an escape route that you dream about every night. Set up night watches, and, if possible, set up some kind of wall around your newly established village (think "I Am Legend"). Even if the whole world has been sterilized of undead, live as if they are crawling the streets at night, or living in caves, planning some kind of comeback. Do not go into an isolated area alone and unarmed, without method of communication. You never know where they will strike next. Live with that readiness--with that fear--for at least a year after the outbreak was over.
Again, do not let down your guard. NEVER LET DOWN YOUR GUARD.

Id like to point out some thing here,, If you asume as I do that the Zombie uprising will come from some kinde of virus (man made or other) there is an inportant side note to consider. viruses tend to grow stronger and as humans on the run tend to gett weaker (lack of food/sleep/) isnt it possible that after some time the virus will start spreading more easely say... throu the air..? for all we know it migth all ready be airborn just that our bodys at there curent state are strong enuff for us not to notis, mabe its only now in our prime health that we nead full boddy contakt with the virus for it to spread?.
Yes all of the above is just speculation but I think its wise to consider stuff like this as it migth turn your thougts to packin a couple of extra vitamins in your survival pack.

What do you mean by "viruses tend to grow stronger and as humans on the run tend to gett weaker (lack of food/sleep/)" i mean, yes, energy wise, humans do lose energy without eating or sleeping, but very rarely does that effect there ability to combat disease. However, while a virus may mutate, by the point it has, most people may have grown a "resistense" to the weakened, airborne version. Unless, when you say airborne, you mean that a zed sneezes on you, but that is something for another day. I just fail to understand the point you are trying to convey.

I think what he's saying is that what if the zombie parasite is airborne, kinda like influenza or chickenpox. I have always thought of a zombie parasite almost like HIV or rabies. You know, contact of bodily fluid. But I also want to point out something. Not every person's immune system are rigged the same way. Some may be very weak, while some can resist Solanum, the T-Virus, and Malaria at the same time without even noticing. Sure, vitamins would help, but a parasite that strong, what with the reanimation and not needing any other major organs but the brain, I doubt a little Vitamin C would help with that sort of thing. We'll just have to count on the way our parents made us, a la "I Am Legend." If it is transeferred by contact, we have a chance. If it is airborne, more than three-quarters of would-be undead hunters or survivors will turn and die.

Just for a side note were alking about the generic zombie virus, IE get bit ot cut by a Z and you get infected. If that ever happend where it was airborne we could call it GVA (G Virus Air). But for right now were discusing the common zombie virus. Also For my zombie killing spree idea I would get a H2 hummer and reiforce it with a chain link fence on the windows. Then I would make it so you could fill it up with gas from the inside and I would add a second tank that was on the inside of the car (Hence being able to fill it up from the inside) so that tank would drain in while the other was getting used. Then I would arm everyone with Semi Auto Assult Riffles (G3, M21, ect) and we would drive around, and make alot of noise. Whenever we got enough Gs on our tail we would stop, pick them off, and repeat for about 4 hours a day.

I honestly don't see much of a "offense against zombies" at least not during the apocolype that most of us here are thinking of. There is survival. You fight what you have to in order to make it and, depending on your mindset, your companions to make it to the next day. I am not in the military so I won't be apart of any governmental fight-back and I don't plan on joining some vigilante or mercenary free-runners army made up of citizens to fight the dead en mass. I will destroy the undead that I must in order to survive and ensure the safety of the ones I am charged with caring for, not jump into some large scale "war" if you want to call it that because it will be one sided. The dead won't see it as war. All they'll do is do what they have been "programmed" to do. I will probably do my share of killing don't get me wrong but as for helping to "clear out" the infestation, count me out until the numbers drop drastically.

This is true. Survival should always take precedence over an all out war. The only time one should consider open battle is if supllies run low and the zombie infested area is navigable and the threat somwhat mitigable. Once again leave your most valuable assests at the "headquarters", use a "shoot and loot" policy, engage the threat just enough to incap, and keep it moving, worry about more accurate shooting when u gotta defend the homefront.

After reading up on the Zombies, all bodily funtions are transferred to the brain, so follow these experimental Anti-Zombie attack manuveres:
Decapitation. The virus is transferred by saliva, and even if you're the living dead, you can't drool from your fingertips( for those suffering Paranoia, dump the zombie in acid or obliterate the body)
High-Calibre bullets. Deasert eagles, High-end Sniper-Rifles, hell, even some machine guns have the capability to blowing off limbs, so aim for the head and BOOM! buh-bye Zombie Boy
And one more thing. Although there are guns without a rending quality to their bullets, some make up with the sheer number of bullets fired that they can shear a body in half.

My plan for taking back our world is simple, start from your settlement and work your way outward in waves taking more land and secureing it as you go. The weapon i would equip my troops with is the AK-47 on semi-auto. It rarely jams and is very easy to use. I would use a old movement of lineing up your men in a straight line and postioning another row standing behind them and fireing volly after volly into a horde, in the rear there would be men who would race back and forth from the frontline to supplies giving the troops ammo and whatever. There would also be reserve men to take the place of someone if they had to rest. Also the groups would be drilled so they can pull into a square if they are flanked. When on campain men are drooped off if zombies are found in a area at a ratio of 2 men per 1 zombie seen. They will join the rear when done. Transport will be buses designed like the one off Land of the Dead and Dawn of the Dead remake.

To fight a zombie one must first study their enemy, I recommend watching a lot of zombie movies
Take a self defense class to understand something about martial arts there are many different styles
Buy a gun if possible and learn to use it
if Z-day doesn't happen then you will be safe from other humans
Try to stay in shape as this will help in any situation
Most zombies die if they are decapitated

If this doesn't kill a zombie it should slow them down and blind it
some zombies may be stronger than others next think about armour to avoid taking damage
- padded armour is good (Sports)
- leather armour is also a good ideal (medieval armour)
