A Free Browser Based Zombie RPG

Zombie Pandemic is a free PBBG (persistent browser based game) multi-player zombie adventure. Zombie Pandemic is a free PPBG (persistent browser based game) multiplayer zombie adventure featuring enriched RPG elements, including advanced combat, a skill tree and use of realistic navigation on a real world map. Over all it's a great place to check out your survival skills with more than 300 (now 500!) weapons to choose from. Everyone is welcome to risk their neck by signing up to become zombie chow. ZP has a weblog as well with a small collection of links and zombie movie reviews.

That said, the below information is going to be totally honest. Be prepared for good and bad aspects.

As you can tell by the above pictures, the artists for this game are quite achieved. Unlike Urban Dead or a similar text based game, every single aspect of ZP is fully illustrated. The attention to detail is great, and makes it a good deal more interesting than the baseline coding should be, to be honest.

Like a Resident Evil game, you can examine every single item you pick up (currently 561) and find a unique description. Every location has a number of items you can search. Zombies are not stock either, coming in a staggering variety of types, including crippled zombies, mobs, clowns, dead player characters.

This may be the strongest part of the game. The atmosphere just adds so much to the game, and the effort that the ZP people put into it is apparent.

Zombie Pandemic - Zombie Survival & Defense WikiGameplay
The game world is navigated by a minimap, to the right (though the newer map is a more realistic, satellite like image). Locations are marked by x and y coordinates, like a coordinate plane/

Action Points refill at a set rate, 200 being limit. Each attack, movement or action takes a certain amount of AP, and you can plot out a course for your energy level as the AP cost of traveling is automatically calculated.

The game world has a number of NPC factions, where players can buy items, rest in safety, sign up for missions and train. They are unlocked by leveling and progress in other factions.

Combat is fairly basic. The zombies start at a certain distance and approach steadily, and the player uses their equipped weapon to fight the

XP gained from battles allows the player to level up, each level allowing them a set number of points to spend on their stats. NPC buildings have specific training courses that specialize in a certain skill. While they take a long time for even a single point (ten hours for one point), it is simple enough to activate training before one logs off, as the time offline is calculated as training.

Combat performance is strictly based upon stats. A marksmanship is put against the enemy's agility rating when a weapon is used. Strength keys into attack power of hand to hand weapons. Skills such a technical prowess and charisma determine success in missions and character interactions. All results come out as a percentage value, meaning they're not absolute and a good deal of combat is luck.

Problems
Every game has it's problems, and of course this game is still in the beta phase. Among online zombie games, the issue seems to be long-term interest. Past missions, these games often lack side activities for players to take up. While safehouses and clans are planned expansions, there isn't gambling, item crafting or specialization to develop. The game is admittedly close-ended and gets old pretty quick.

The designers are not especially fluent in English, coming (from my understanding) from Denmark.

On the flip side, the staff is very open to suggestions and the game is constantly expanding, so that perceived problem may well be solved by the time you read this. Try the game. It's still pretty good.

When I first started playing ZP, I thought that it was an alright little game with some potential. However, the developers have decide to change it from a survival game into a social game. Instead of actually developing the game and fixing problems like farming they have been spending their time on making the game pretty for the social butterfly crowd. They have added a few missions in the last three months, but only enough for a few days of playing.

They have stated that they are not going to have the original 8 maps that they were planning and instead will settle for 4 or maybe 5. They are planning to make it so that it will be almost impossible for new players to go it alone and then they will have to join clans. The whole game is being shifted towards clan play where everyone holds each others hands to play.

The developers are basically selling out to the pop culture crowd.

I strongly encourage people to stay away from this and any other Pixel Pandemic game. Even if you do decide to play, please don't waste your money on them.

John_234 The ZSDW in Zombie Pandemic! (page: 1 2 3 4 5 ... last page) 160 Apr 3 2011, 6:06 PM EDT by Whybother08

We've had some discussions with the fine folks running Zombie Pandemic (http://www.zombiepandemic.com), and we's working on an affiliate site relationship. We cross-feature each other's sites to get more attention for both. Now, there is a fun part to this...

We've been given the clear to write up some missions for the ZSDW faction that will be introduced in-game. With some discussion, we decided to take this to the public for your guys' ideas. Thomas at ZP asked for ideas that would fit a short series of missions, nothing unbelievably overdone.

I think that's pretty reasonable.
