There will be abhorrent death and decay. In recent years the hypothetical scenario of a "zombie apocalypse" has grown more popular, as well as become more of a serious matter in some circles. The typical scenario incorporates the issues of not only a viral infection, but a breakdown of law and order, shortage of electricity, water, gas and other manufactured goods, all the elements of a conventional disaster. As such, it is only slightly different in core principles, but enough so that detailed plans can and have been developed for such a disaster. So how can we survive this crisis? Food, water, shelter, and health, do you think of this when you think of a zombie attack?
The Federal Emergency Management Agency puts out a list of recommended materials for survival in case of any type of disaster. These are broadly the same for zombies. The most notable items are food and water, a radio, first aid kit, light, map, and cell phone, as well as wrenches, duct tape and plastic sheeting for household work. Food and water are pretty self explanatory, but it is important to pick the right sort of food. Dried foods require large amounts of purified water and heat source to cook, versus canned goods, which contain their own water but are significantly heavier. The difference is that dried foods may be more useful for a fixed location, and canned foods are more valuable on the move. Water will become a big asset in the open zombie territory.
During this crisis, fresh water can be found in a grocery store, a factory, or even in local homes. This should only be an option if preparation was not considered If water bottles, or some sort of freshwater, were forgotten then consider a flint, or fire-starting kit. This takes water from a nearby water source, such as a lake or a pond, and boil it. If both of these are forgotten there are fixed areas that can be managed by several kinds of filtering mechanisms. On a medium scale, an "Oil Drum Filter" can work very well. Composed of a barrel that uses charcoal, sand, and other components to cleanse the water that is poured in the top, it drains purified water at the bottom. For a Hunter/Gatherer style lifestyle, the main source of water would be limited to running, freshwater streams. After the initial outbreak, most survivors would be able to depend on purification tablets and the like to make their water safe to drink.
Food is a completely different concern, though it is also an important asset. Depending on your experience with hunting this may or may not be difficult for you. There are a couple different ways of going about getting food such as hunting or raiding stores. First off, hunting for animals such as deer, rabbits, squirrels, wild turkey, mice, turtles, bats, alligators, duck, fish and different varieties of birds. Some of these may not be the first preference, but will satisfy hunger. Hunting these animals will requires the right equipment. For animals that are ground roaming a trap will most likely be required. This is a trap often seen on TV, in which the top piece and the bottom piece come together and crush the animal, or a bigger animals paw. When an animal walks into the trap it slams shut possibly cutting into and sometimes cutting off the leg of the animal. As far as birds and bats are concerned the most efficient way would be shooting it, it is also the most common . Birds can be shot down with either a gun, spear, or a bow and arrow. Guns are the most successful when it comes to the actual death and aim. Turtles can be cooked up in a turtle stew which is very healthy for you.
There are a few different ways and techniques to building a shelter. There is a normal camping tent, but those can cost you several hundreds of dollars and would be a pain to lug around while you are trying to run from zombies. A simple way would be using tarp and parachute chord. You simply take the strings and tie them to two trees that are lined up evenly with each other a drape the tarp over the strings it is useful that if this path is chosen that a few tent pegs ( four preferably) is brought along to put in the ground to hold it out. When the tent is built it is always a good idea to use the leaves and cover the tent with them to camouflage the tent. Some other uses of there same leaves are that they are able to give a good tent that will last as very basic protection from the elements. They also provide very good hiding from the natural kings of the woods such as the bear, wolf, bobcat, and the fox. First Aid may be on of the most important assets.
During the pre-apocalyptic times First Aid will be used to many people alive until the EMT ( Emergency Medical Team) arrives to take your place. When the zombies show up it is left up to you to learn how to fend for yourself and the others around you, this will more than likely save the human race. Most first aid kits include absorbent compress dressings, adhesive bandages, adhesive cloth tape, packets of aspirin, blanket, instant cold compresses, pair of non-latex gloves, two hydrocortisone ointment packets, Scissors, roller bandage, one roller bandage , five sterile gauze pads, five sterile gauze pads, Oral thermometer, two triangular bandages, Tweezers, First aid instruction booklet. There are some items to consider strictly for zombie survival.
Max Brook's Zombie Survival Guide features a list of recommended items for both bugging out (a common term for leaving the house), and bugging in (fortifying a fixed location.) Road flares, tools like crowbars, and of course, firearms. A notable difference is that many tools can be counted as weapons of opportunity. The crowbar is used due to its double use as both a tool and emergency weapon, same for the hatchet or axe. Contrary to popular belief, firepower is not the primary concern in pre-zombie stockpiling, but it is a concern none the less. Handguns tend to work best as backup weapons. Shotguns and rifles can be immensely powerful and versatile, but the ammunition can be very bulky. Military-style semi automatic "assault rifles" offer a great amount of firepower that can be used for defense, zombies or hunting in a pinch, at the cost of attracting much more attention. Compared to most disaster plans, zombie plans tend to incorporate heavy amounts of small caliber firearms that can carry lots of ammunition (.22 Long Rifle, for example) and non-firearm weapons that can keep on killing zombies even when ammunition is depleted. This is due to the long-term nature of most envisioned zombie scenarios.
There are many different types of zombie that have been predicted to be able to exist. There is the Ragers, the Shamblers, and Runners. The most dangerous are the Ragers. The Ragers come from an advanced form of the rabies virus which is a virus which causes an animal to foam at the mouth and lose control of its anger. When this virus is amplified is a very dangerous virus as if it affects humans it potentially makes them immune to pain.this however doesn't mean that it cannot be killed. There is two ways to kill a Rager. One way is to just blow them apart with a shotgun. However it is not know if that will kill them and whether or not the parts will keep crawling towards you. One sure way to kill any zombie is to sever the brain stem ( in other words separate the head from the body.) The Shambler is thought to be a very slow moving corpse. The most commonly known way that this is developed is that a virus called “Solanum” infects the brain and destroys the frontal lobe of the brain and replaces it with a new oxygen independent organ. This organ then takes control of the body. When this happens the body loses it immunity to the tiny microorganisms that surround us in the air. This causes the body to begin to rot as the body is slowly destroyed by the organisms. This is what cause the slow rotting of the body. A Runner is just essential a fast version of the Shambler. It is able to move fast and is hard to kill due to its agility. However, a shotgun would possibly be the best weapon to dispatch the creature, due to the variety of ammunition that a shotgun uses. The ammunition for such a job is perhaps "buckshot." This is basically a shotgun shell loaded with several small lead balls, and, depending on the type you use, can vary in diameters. The usefulness comes into play with the "spread" associated with the lack of accuracy of about a dozen lead balls exploding out of the barrel, and, due to the lack of any real aerodynamics, spreads outward. This is best used at close range.
There is also the issue of how to get energy to run the many devices in a persons life, and would require many things to get it. Gas is needed as well, and may be a little harder to get than wind power. It is needed to run a car, it is used to power a generator, and it is used to start almost instant fires. However there will be very little gas left after the raiders raid the gas stations. There are many different ways to get energy from the environment. Some of the different ways are by the water, mechanical energy (running on a treadmill), solar energy, and heat. Most energy got in the times of the zombies will be gotten by running on a treadmill or being on a stationary bike. This is usually done by someone hooking up a bunch of wires to the bikes rotor and to the generator. When the person begins to run the flow of energy is transferred to electricity, and it is used to run the generator. This is a productive way to make energy as it this also allows the person doing the pedaling or running to get some exercise and stay in shape. This allows the person to be in better condition to survive.
Another way to get energy is to attempt to set up a waterwheel. However, this will only work if you have a source of running water. If you have the running water it lets you gain energy as the water runs by and it rotates the actual gears in the generator and allows it to run for as long as the water continues to flow through the water wheel. This is not exactly as productive as running on a treadmill as it wont give anyone exercise. This is not quite bad, but it is definitely not as a pro of having a bigger and factory made water wheel ever. Using the power of the wind is a very good choice as the wind is almost constantly blowing. This allows an almost year around energy source of energy. This is powered by the wind blowing on the petals of the fan and moving it around in circles just like a water wheel. It then spins like a giant pinwheel and the rotations turn a ton of gears and it turns the wheel in the generator too. This is not as beneficial as using a tread machine but it is one of the cleanest ways to get energy.
In a different day and different year a zombie invasion could more then likely take place. To prevent death essential items must be acquired: water, food, shelter, weapons, and health. Water is gotten from either self supply or the store or factories supply. Food your own your own, you either find it in a store or hunt. Shelter can be obtained in many different ways, such as a formal camping tent or leaves and twigs. Health can be partially protected through the use of a first aid kit. Power may be cut out as well as water and gas. You must be prepared for the unexpected. If you are not, you will not be able to live and retell your story.
