Welcome! This here is for young survivors that are not sure about surviving in a civilization lost apocalypse full of undead beasts. I am here to give you tips, tell you advantages of being young, disadvantages, how to live, what to pack, etc. Now, I would consider the optimum age for "young" is 12-18. This range seems to be a fairly mature group and at least know about real life issues and how to do things alone.
THIS GUIDE IS FOR THE INEXPERIENCED, IF YOU ARE QUITE SURE YOU CAN SURVIVE, AND HAVE HANDLED A GUN, THIS GUIDE IS NOT FOR YOU.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Being Young:
Your young, and as of that, there are advantages and disadvantages that you have at your age.

Advantages:
  • Youth: You are young, so you can do many things older people can't do. Maybe you can run faster, crawl into small spaces, climb easier, your not fat(yet), and you won't be straining your back any time soon!
I'd say that is all you have. Youth is always on your side. Other then that, you have a whole lot of disadvantages.

Disadvantages:
  • Lack of experience: You haven't experienced life as it has to offer. You haven't learnt lessons, you haven't gotten a real job, maybe haven't even drove, let alone gotten to college or lived on your own. These are quite crucial when it comes to Z'day, as experience is what can decide life or death.
  • Electronic Oriented: Admit it, how long do you think you can go without the Internet, TV, your DS, your Mp3, etc? I'm betting your parents could do it. They were raised when these things didn't even exist. You, on the other hand, was raised near the 21st century. Your life depends(as you think) on electronic entertainment to keep you going. Unless you know you don't need these things, this is a very big thing in your way.
  • Lack of know-how: You don't know how a car works, or how a boat works, or how electricity is made. You probably don't know how to navigate with stars, modify items, well, the list goes on. You haven't even gotten out of your house. Knowing this, your going to have a tough time surviving.
  • Physical Lack: You're probably not a body builder, and to say being an adult means you are a lot stronger. Your stamina as an adult is also a lot more. You probably can't bench press more than an adult, and an adult, well they're just better in this category.
  • Dependence: You depend on your parent's care for a lot of things. Now, imagine just right now, they're gone. May seem like a paradise, but you never know how valuable something is until it's gone. Who's going to wash your clothes, wash the dishes, clean the house, drive you around, etc?
  • Technology Oriented: You flick the switch, turn the faucet, etc. What comes is artificially made by man in large plants. When most everyone is a zombie, these things will slowly disappear as no one is there to make them. You have developed a lifestyle of a care free world where everything is handed to you. When electricity is gone, along with other essentials, you begin to go crazy as you cannot adjust to this lifestyle.
  • Overconfidence: You think killing your parents is easy and that you can finally show the world how cool and brave you are right? Wrong. You probably wouldn't kill let alone kill you parents, and this is not the same world you used to know.

There are a few things you can do at this age to help with survival now as well as later in life. Such things are:

  • Boy scouts: It's fun, plus it teaches you a lot of survival techniques and takes you away from electronic devices for the most part. It also teaches you citizenship, leadership, and a lot more.
  • Sports: It's something most kids like, it helps you build muscle, and you may have an arsenal of baseball bats and hockey sticks at your disposal when the time comes.
  • School: You hate it, but you have to go anyway. You will learn about science and history, both being helpful in emerging societies, plus there are electives designed for learning how to build and fix machines.
  • Go kart racing: You'll be more likely to be able to drive if you've had a bit of experience.
There's plenty more, but from what's already there, you can choose what you should do for the rest, based on what you need to learn.

But enough about that, it's time to get packin'.

Scenario Time! You wake up in your nice pleasant home in (Enter city here). You get out of bed, and see 2 horribly disgusting disfigured creatures slowly climbing the stairs. They look as if they are dead, and are moaning. Welcome to Z'day. Poof, your parents have become another of the unlucky hundreds of people that have been infected with a deadly disease that turns your parents into zombies. They want your flesh, and bites will infect you, making you one of them. You are shocked. You don't know what to do.

What to do: Your parents are zombies. Now what is a zombie? To not rip off every guide on zombies on this site, I'll make it short.

A zombie is a dead corpse that walks alive and looks for flesh to eat, mostly human. Zombie bites will cause you to turn into one of them. Zombies have heightened senses, so they are better then you in most ways. They cannot think, cannot adapt, and are relatively slow, so you can always outsmart them.

Back to the scenario: These are not your parents anymore. There is no cure. Luckily you read about this on ZS&DW. If informed on this site, your chances of surviving have already doubled. You have a choice, either to shove them out of the house, or kill them. Killing your parents is last on your young mind, but adding to the hoard of the zombies is not much of a good idea either. But, if you cannot cope with the emotional struggle, then let them go.

You realize you are too late, the infection has started! You haven't prepared much for you BOB, and the world will slowly turn to mush. Not to worry! As it is only the beginning, you still have time! This is a new world you are going to, so you must be cautious. Now, a BOB is a Bug Out Bag, but we'll get to that later.

Right now, time for the E3. No, not E3 for all your new video games, but the Emergency 3(made it up myself). These are 3 important things to do when information of the outbreak gets to you! My motto is "You never know how valuable something is until it's gone." As a kid for you, you have never had life without necessities. So:

E3 #1: Turn on your bathtubs and sinks. Yes, all of them. You may not know it, but this water is actually perfectly safe to drink, just doesn't taste as good as fresh water, but tap is fine(I drank it once). Make sure to plug the exit so no water flows out. Water will be cut off just as soon as the electricity is(which is in a couple hours of the plant shutting down).

E3 #2: Take inventory. Food will be scarce and can be infected. Make a list of what you need(no not the Oreos, the essentials!) Without electricity, the fridge won't work. So, you cannot store perishables. Perishables are food that will expire without refrigeration(steak, milk, eggs) or things that expire quickly(bread, steak, chicken, cookies, fruits, veggies). What you need are non perishables, things that last years on end and don't expire. Here's some things to have in mind.
  • Canned foods. Estimated Expiration: Years. These are the gods of food in Z'day so get these first!
  • Rice. Estimated expiration date. 1-2 years. There's a reason this is the staple of Asian diet ho-ho-ho. Its quite nourishing.
  • MREs. Estimated Expiration: Years. Militaries use these. They are kinda disgusting, but some are good. They come with a lot of extra stuff too. Look up MRE recipes on this site for more info.
  • Bottled Water and Soda: Estimated Expiration: Years. Bottled water is the safest to drink, and soda is in a can.
Now, you can't be picky in a world that is scarce of food. Everything I can know of is in a can, even bread.
  • Zombie Survival Guide for the Young - Zombie Survival & Defense Wiki I have added pictures for those with short attention spans.
  • E3 #3: Barricade. For a kid like you, you don't know what the world out there is like, so it's best to stay where you are. Unless you live in a highly populated area, in that case you should get out. Virus spreads faster in places like thos, so it is best to roam to a less populated area. Use furniture to block windows and doors, knock down on the deck if you have one. This isn't a house anymore, it is a survival sanctuary, no need to worry about furniture all over the place. Make sure you get ALL your materials first before putting yourself in your fort. I cannot imagine a person who has barricaded so much, but forgot to get all his stuff from the nearby places. And remember, lock your doors. Zeds cannot operate door-knobs, hello?

  • Now, on to the BOB. These are bags in case of zombies getting into your fortified shelter. I am betting you have all heard about them on this site, and seen how much crap they have to carry and what you know you cannot get. NEVER FEAR, I have made a comprehensive list of all those things in a much shorter, lighter package.

  • I shall add more later. And remember, this page was made by me, pichu.

By the way, how do you make a link to a page, but it does not have the URL, but instead it says Here or something like that?
