I agree they suck in the long term but a truck would help for getting and transporting supplies to build fortification. I can confidently say only an idiot would go on foot to get building supplies for a base.

I got a better answer to the gas problem it's called a gasifer if you ever seen the colony (like I did) they used a gasifer to run a flat bed truck they had a airtight container full of wood inside a larger container that had a fire the heat cause the wood inside the airtight container to give of a air gas that could power a makeshift genorator or a car to cool the gas down before it reached he engine they used a old reator and atached a fan to it to cool it down further (be careful when trying to make a gasifier there if made wrong can be highly explosive)

Problem one solved========Gas, diesel, even kerosene that are stored at gas stations are pumped electrically. So no power, means no raiding a gas station for fuel. You will be stuck with what you have when the lights go out--------- WRONG! Even tho they have motorized pumps its still a belt and pulley system. all you would have to do is simply remove the housing to the pump and attach a hand crank. I would NOT suggest doing this during the first weeks of the infection as there would draw alot of attention to you and you would need some time to find bolt sizes and other things of this nature
Problem two solved=======computer systems that control so much that a problem with something a small as a sensor can cause huge problems-----Yes that is very true with "newer" model cars but I would you would rather have dependability over style. "older" model cars with out dated systems are less integrated and easily bypassed========Even if you're Billy Jim Bob and can fix any problem with the most basic of tool kits, at some time a part is going to break beyond the point of repair------------Replacement parts are mass produced for the sake of a large population, with that same population being at an all time low there will be plenty of parts to go around==========in later years you have to worry about rust----------there are plenty of ways to avoid rust and even safely remove rust. Yes rust is unavoidable but the life span of your transportation can be greatly prolonged by simple maintenance===========So once your battery fails, and it will, you might have a tough time getting a replacement, or recharging one----------------- well the short term fix for this is have at least two batteries, rotate them week by week. as far as long term there is replacement fluids for most car batteries

all of the points here are valid, but i have to disagree that motor vehicles will be of absolutely no use.
if your in a situation where your fortress has become over run, you may not be able to simply walk out. motor vehicle should be used for short fast sprints to get away from a large immediate danger. as a long term solution they are all but useless because of (as they said) fuel consumption, maintenance, and noise. it will be important to have a vehicle in case you get into a situation where you have to move large amounts of people/supplies long distances and fast. |

I'd have to agree solely on the fact that the fuel will run out of your car and it will become useless eventually. But the key word is eventually. My father is a mechanic and owns an off-road car business. We have, at one time, half-a-dozen Toyota Land Cruisers which are the ultimate off-road vehicles. Plus, my dad being a mechanic he can keep the maintenance on the car at pristine condition, but obviously I am blessed in this fashion. My main objection is that on average a car has about a 12-gallon tank, and the land cruiser has about a 20 gallon tank. If you fill this up before the "shit hits the fan" then you are looking at over 200 miles of solid distance. This can be the difference between leaving an infected area or waiting for the ever impending doom of zombies at your doorstep.

for so long i have been trying to explan why cars suck, but now you have figured out how to break the truth to everyone. all of what you have said has something to back it up, & alot to back it up. its simple, cars are fast, but even hummers can't go offroad that well, & it is a waste of valuable fuel.
infact, a car wouldn't even be good during z-day. because z-day is when the roads get blocked off, when everyone hits the highway & walmarts, & when the power goes out. my advice: get an SUV & attach a bike rack & some bikes for your group. drive off, & when it becomes impassible with a car, get out, strap your supplies, bags & knapsacks to your backs & the bikes, 7 keep going. watch people who only brang a car scream as zombies tear them to shreads as you head off in your trusty bike.

i have to say that for the most part i agree. although i do believe that it is possible that some people would use motor vehicles for the first couple of years, at least till they broke down. Although i have to agree that for the most part that would be impractical.

Fuel) yes fuel is heavy, but if you have a vehicle, can carry quite a bit. if i cant get it out of an abandoned station, i know where the refineries are. shouldnt be too hard to come across a tanker truck. true fuels dont keep forever, but i have had gas cans of gas for a year or 2 for my small engines without sta-bil. never had a problem. but then again i dont plan on extended use. just get out of town.
maintenance) if you cant repair it, you shouldnt be using it. why have a weapon if you dont know how to correct a malfunction? same principal. if you are truly planning ahead, you (like I) would have a pre '75-'79 vehicle that doesnt have a comp or chip. diesels are even better because you can use vegetable oil to run it. mobility) as part of my plan, i will not take main or even secondary roads if i dont have to. and if things back up, my truck can make it through wuite a bit of off roading. as for the anti motorcycle thing, make a choice, stay and get eaten, or leave on a dirt bike/ATV, i will take the latter. in survival mode, your body consumes energy greater than normal. if you put yourself on a bike or walk, then you can double the intake you will need to survive. driving takes no effort. noise) this premise is based on zombies being attracted by noise. since it hasnt happened yet, you cannot assume this. it is always better to have and not need than need and not have. when zombies come, we will find out if they are attracted by noise or what, only then can we make a sound decision. if you want to walk, go right ahead. this may not work in every situation. people need to be prepared. and have an alternate plan. if you stick to your walk/bike plan and 28 days later zombies (fast) show up, then you would be pretty screwed. dont get me wrong you may have a plan that works great for YOU, but not everybody.
