Vehicles
This is an extensive list of transportation when that fateful day happens. Before the list, some things to consider. These vehicles are distinctly land-based. For air vehicles, see Aircraft. For sea vehicles, see Vessels. For military vehicles, see Militry Vehicles
Purpose
Most vehicles will be used to get from point A to point B. Scouting should be reserved for the quieter, stealthier and less noticeable human. While the thought of a heavily armed bus may appeal, if it's you and a few others stick with a small truck or other vehicle. If it's a crew of you, your best friends, your woman and ten other skilled people, go with the bus or a van. The reasoning behind this is gasoline. Using a bus that burns gas at 10 miles a gallon isn't worth the effort when transporting a small group. Also realize that you wouldn't want to go smashing through a city with a 1990 Honda Civic. The key importance is weighing out protection, stealth, and cargo capacity.
Protection
Zombies aren't stronger than the human they were created from, but protection is still an issue. While 2 inches of steel plating isn't a must, a solid structure is necessary. Most vehicles can survive minor collisions, but ramming through a horde of zombies is just plain stupid. A car with a chassis that is higher up off the ground is ideal, with less of a tendency to be swarmed and have it's windows busted through. Also keep in mind that in the case of a flat tire, or worse, engine problems, that car needs to be strong enough to hold up against attacking zombies.
Stealth
Imagine you're on the highway, maybe after getting supplies with your survivor pals, in a loaded semi-truck with a trailer filled with guns, people, and other supplies. You, driving with your woman in your lap, your best pal riding shotgun, and a whole convoy of survivors firing fifty-cal turrets, grenades and other things going off, you neglect one thing. When the day is over, and you go to sleep, the thousands of zombies that heard the noise will hunt you down with no trouble. Stealth is key. While you may be skilled and can pop a head shot off with one eye closed, and have a few dozen survivors who are just as skilled, in the long run you save supplies, guns, gas, and, most importantly, lives when not seen. A big convoy is only smart when traveling very long distances, as in from city to city or between fortresses. When foraging for supplies and a vehicle is a must, go with a small, quiet car, not a loud, destructive hummer.
Cargo Capacity
Now, seeing as you need to survive along with everyone else you've picked up, you need a place for all those guns, ammo, supplies, gasoline, food and people! A big storage space is essential, but how big is too big? This depends. If you have all sorts of rifles, pistols machine guns, knives machetes, explosives, turrets and 20,000 rounds, food, water, animals, you, your woman, two dozen others and Grandma Agnes, a semi trailers are ideal. However, don't go packing all that in a few trucks. A fifty caliber turret is near pointless unless against a horde, so don't pack that in the trunk unless you are IMMEDIATELY taking it back to a base or a leaving convoy. Remember, only what's necessary. If a semi trailer full of supplies is necessary, then so be it. Just don't take that trailer and put a box or two in the back. Use it to it's fullest potential, and if that isn't obtainable, you'd be best to leave it in a place you may remember or block off a road with it.
Size
In this case, size does matter (no pun intended). Almost all roads, particularly highways and freeways, will be clogged, bumper to fender, throughout the world with people who tried to flee. Many of these cars will have "grabbers", zombies who died buckled into their seatbelts. They will reach out and try to grab you into their vehicles so they can eat you. Also, trying to drive a bus through a clogged road is hundreds of times more difficult than a few motorcycles or bikes. Don't get a huge vehicle unless it has the strength to move dozens cars without being damaged itself.
Outfitting
Equally as important as the vehicle itself is the outfit kit; What type of gear you carry, integrated or stowed on board, can seriously effect what areas you can access and what missions you can accomplish. For example, a semi or a bus can be outfitted with a snow plow to easily just drive through a horde. A pickup truck can have a machine gun planted on the back (provided you can find one). Even whter or not you carry a kayak can effect where you can go, or how you get there.
Convoying
While “as presented” most of the vehicles here are implied to be single, stand-alone unit, the reality is you should NEVER move out in less than 2 vehicle convoys (much more, if possible). If you down to one vehicle, you should consider taking to your feet for all ambulatory members and reserving the vehicles for injured members, at least long enough to find additional transportation.
Tip: If you have been driving through any area and for any reason, your car will not move, get out and RUN as far away as possible. You may have been broadcasting a message to all Skin Jobs within earshot that "Dinner is served."
In no particular order, here are some of the best means of transportation during the zombie outbreaks.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On Foot:
This is one of the best always-available ways to travel. Everyone except paralyzed people and babies can do it. It requires little energy and will outrun the normal stereotype zombie easily. This mode of transportation provides no cover and you can't run over zombies. Use this mode of transportation ONLY to get away in a clinch; DO NOT use this mode of transportation unless you have NO other options.
The main advantage is that if you walk, you lose very little energy. This mode is best left for scouts and people who are in shape.
Attainability: Always to almost everyone
Maintenance: Normal for a human
Gas Mileage: Unlimited
Toughness: What kind of weapon do you have?
Fuel Type: Food and Water

If there’s nothing else just hop in and ride. If you need some added protection just put some wood over the top and crouch inside.
However, for practical purposes you could only use them for short-range material trasportation (probably less than 1 mile), even inside your fortress; The addition of much bigger than average wheels would give them limited off-road ablity; And finally, you could cut em up and use them to re-enforce something.

Rickshaw:
Rickshaws (or rickshas) are a mode of human-powered transport: a runner draws a two-wheeled cart which seats one or two persons. The word rickshaw came from Asia where they were mainly used as means of transportation for the social elite. However, in m

| A Pair Of Typical Rickshaws; One Is Purely Hand-Powered, The Other Bicycle. |
Runner pulled rickshaws have mainly been replaced in Asia by bicycle rickshaws. They are also common in Western cities like New York City. In London they are known as pedicabs. The term "rickshaw" is today commonly used for those vehicles as well, but this article deals exclusively with runner-pulled rickshaws.
The word "rickshaw" originates from the Japanese word jinrikisha (人力車, 人 jin=human, 力 riki=power or force, 車 sha=vehicle), which literally means "human-powered vehicle".
History
The 1707 painting "Les deux carrosses" by Claude Gillot shows two rickshaw-like carts in a comical scene. These carts, known as vinaigrettes because of their resemblance to the wheel barrows of vinegar makers, were used in the streets of Paris in the 17th and 18th century.
Rickshaws first appeared in Japan around 1868, at the beginning of the Meiji Restoration. They soon became a popular mode of transportation, since they were faster than the previously used palanquins (and human labor was considerably cheaper than using horses).
The identity of the inventor (if there was one) remains uncertain. Some American sources give the American blacksmith Albert Tolman, who is said to have invented the rickshaw around 1848 in Worcester, Massachusetts for a missionary; others claim that Jonathan Scobie (or W. Goble), an American missionary to Japan, invented rickshaws around 1869 to transport his invalid wife through the streets of Yokohama.
Still others say the rickshaw was designed by an American Baptist minister in 1888. This is undoubtedly incorrect, for an 1877 article by a The New York Times correspondent in Tokyo stated that the "jin-riki-sha, or man-power carriage" was in current popular use, and was probably invented by an American in 1869 or 1870.
Japanese sources often credit Izumi Yosuke, Suzuki Tokujiro, and Takayama Kosuke, who are said to have invented rickshaws in 1868, inspired by the horse carriages that had been introduced to the streets of Tokyo shortly before. Starting in 1870, the Tokyo government issued a permission to build and sell rickshaws to these three men; the seal of one of these inventors was also required on every license to operate a rickshaw.
By 1872, some 40,000 rickshaws were operating in Tokyo; they soon became the chief form of public transportation in Japan. (Powerhouse Museum, 2005; The Jinrikisha story, 1996)
Around 1880, rickshaws appeared in India, first in Simla and then, 20 years later, in Calcutta (now Kolkata). Here they were initially used by Chinese traders to transport goods; in 1914 the Chinese applied for permission to use rickshaws to transport passengers. Soon after, rickshaws appeared in many big cities in Southeast Asia; pulling a rickshaw was often the first job for peasants migrating to these cities.

Rollerblades:
Often overlooked in such a situation, roller blades carry a number of advantages and difficulties but for the experienced blader still offer a fair mode of transportation. Rollerblading is much faster than walking, and requires little more effort. The big disadvantage is in the time it takes to get them on, or off. Unlike other vehicles, it requires an average of three minutes to put on roller blades, and when you get into a situation where you can't use them (such as a dirt road) the zombies aren't going to wait for you to take them -off-. Also, anything but good quality will have you tripping and falling fairly often. Experience with either rollerblading, or the surprisingly similar sport of poll-less downhill skiing is highly recommended. Also note the advantage of being able to carry them easily. As a general rule, however, one would be best profited with another option. Also, if your leg is grabbed, you will slip and fall. As in the case of the man in World War Z who was riding on rollerskates and had a hockey stick with a butcher knife on the end, you will fall and cut your head open.

Bicycle:
These are also a readily available means of transportation on Z-Day. They have all the advantages of walking, but with a little more protection. The only fuel necessary is food and water for the rider. The only maintenance required is to keep the tires inflated. I strongly discourage trying to ride over a zombie or through a horde. These are best used for escape or scouting.

You can EASILY find dozens of them at a Wal-Mart, Target, Shoppers, etc.

Horse:
A quiet means of escape or travel to safer and more secure areas. Can carry somewhat large amounts of equipment. No gas required except for vegetation and water, easy to find if not in an urban area. Horses are not for inexperienced riders, as the horse may become startled and throw the rider, or require special care. A horse will not attract attention like a motor vehicle, but if zombies are encountered on a horse, the horse will not stand a chance in a fight and it would be best to continue riding away. In a tough scenario, it could be butchered for food. Also, if the cause of zombies is trans-species, the horse may just become another zombie. In medieval days knights rode around breaking heads before Z day. Dressage was training just for wars. According to the Zombie Survival Guide, they will not just be startled by smelling, hearing, or seeing a ghoul, but they will more than likely throttle you off their back and run away. This will leave you possibly with a broken back or legs, surrounded by zombies. Not a good situation at all. However, an experienced rider could use that as an early-warning and either combat the zombie or ride away. These are easily one of the best vehicles available, provided you can ride a horse.

Hummer H2 SUT:
Useful for mowing down zombies, but you'd have to first put on armor plating on the Hummer and put link fencing on the windows so if you get caught in the middle of an army of zombies it won't be that easy for them to get in. Also on a side note, as stated in The Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks, not all Hummers are as rugged and tough as they are advertised, so know your vehicle before you choose this as your transportation. And, as is to be expected, gas is always a major concern with these vehicles. Make sure you stock up on gas before hand. Decent performance off road compared to other stock SUVs

Made for slamming and ramming. Squad cars are typically reinforced and have upgraded internals. Remember, however, that they are usually not bullet-proof. Even if a squad car is not working, it is good for scavenging as they have radios and perhaps a weapon if you're lucky (remember in Resident Evil: Apocalypse when Alice left the hospital and found the shotgun). Getting a couple of these is definitely good to cruise into zombie territory to look for survivors. Excellent for scounting and escape, as they are some of the fastest conventional vehicles invented.

Those ubiquitous groundskeepers carts are electrically powered, but have limited range and speed. However, they are highly useful in scouting, salvage and recovery, and working yards. These should be carried for supporting roles by those utilizing much heavier, difficult to maneuver platforms, such as box trucks and big rigs. Their off-road capabilities are not as good as feet, but most are designed to be able to handle limited rough terrain- Which is better than anything other than a dedicated off-road vehicle. Also, since they’re electric, they are almost absolutely silent so skin jobs can’t hear you coming, and use no fuel per say, allowing that to be better employed elsewhere.
Attainability: Low; Best found in urban and suburban industrial areas and near groundskeepers areas.
Maintenance: LowRange: Medium; Needs time to charge.
Toughness: Very Low in combat situations, High in non-combat.
Fuel Type: Electric
NOTE: A kissing cousin to the Cushman Cart are golf carts; The two types should, generally, be considered essentially exactly the same (indeed, "Cushman" is the brand name, and Cushman manufactures golf carts as well).

AKA: Tornado Intercept Vehicle (TIV)
This vehicle obviously means business- Just look at it! It SCREAMS "Just try to eat my brain, you fuckers!!" This thing was PURPOSE-BUILT to brave the worst tornadoes out there. This beast has armor, a built in turret originally made for a camera, but we all know what goes there (50-cal, anyone?) and it has at least 6 wheels, plus sloped walls to deflect any attack. It could very easily be outfitted with bullet-proof windows (and proabably is already outfitted with shatterproof windows, which are much more practical for the rise of the skin jobs). It must have a pretty hefty engine, to haul all that armor, people, AND filming equipment.
Availability: You would have to build it yourself, just like the original.

Toughness: Near unlimited- It DID stand up to a tornado, after all.

BEARCAT (Ballistic Engineered Armored Response): The BEARCAT, though difficult to acquire will provide exceptional p
rotection from zombie attack. There is no way in the world one of those brain-munchers will get through one of these. They are available in both two and four wheel drive, and the tires are made of solid rubber. It weights over ten tons and has a powerfuldieselengine. Though gas millage is poor with something this heavy, you will still get at least 200 miles per tank on pavement, maybe 150 on grass/off-road. All parts of the vehicle (including windows) are ballistically engineered to stop high-caliber rifle rounds and even explosions from an improvised explosive device (IED). All sides of the vehicle have gun-ports to deliver firepower from a safe environment. There is a top turret opening, providing a safe and elevated position to snipe the walking dead or other threats from a distance. You can easily defend yourself from zombies in this baby, but more importantly a raider posses a significantly reduced threat. The front is equipped with a winch to pull yourself free from a stuck position(or to pull someone else free). The headlights are protected by a thick metal grate which will prevent a broken bulb (VERY IMPORTANT) when you impact a walking corpse at 60 miles per hour. Along with the standard headlights, there are two remote controlled three (3) million candle power headlights on top that will light up the distance. They can also facilitate long distance communication via morse code. Sure, there is a high-power 25w two-way radio inside, but not everyone has access to police band frequencies. There is a PA system to communicate verbally from the inside of the vehicle to other survivors, or to warn raiders. The inside can keep about 6 people safe in a comfortable environment. You can fit more, but it will be very tight. There are runners along the side an back where people can ride, they can even sit on the roof. I would not recommend riding there, but you may be able to sell spots on the side or roof of your vehicle to others for a significant amount of money.
Stay away from swampy areas with this. It can cross a shallow river; but if you get stuck in the mud, you'd better hope there is a tree nearby so you can us the winch. If you become submerged in water, you are DEAD. There is no way out of this watery tomb. Keep in mind that a grenade (from a raider) could fit through a gun port, so keep them CLOSED unless you need to fire bullets or transfer currency to passengers on the outside. Many police departments do not even have a BEARCAT. Usually, cities of 300,000 people or more have an armored vehicle such as the BEARCAT. When Z-Day comes, be the first to grab it - and you are guaranteed to survive.

Trains:
A “train” is a series of vehicles connected together; As the term is typically applied, it refers to a single motor unit (“engine”) pulling more than 2 units (cars), typically without motors.
Trains have several advantages over other ground vehicles;
- They can move large amounts of material at lower overall cost. If you attach machine guns or such to a train, you can easily take out an entire small city's worth of zombies, as long as everyone is a good shot.
- Their mass and speed will simply flatten any skin jobs (or normies) that get in their way or push cars out of the way.
- They can easily be up-armed, armored, and equipped into mobile command/attack centers, especially as staging platforms for smaller, more mobile vehicles.
- They are absolutely restricted to the rails. They can not go off-road in any way, shape, or form. Even a minor breakage in the rails can de-rail the entire train, killing the passengers, destroying the merchandise, and blocking the lines for up to months to come.
Most modern trains are diesel-powered, though commuter trains are typically electricity-powered; However, the economies of a post-skin job would will probably restrict the manufacturing capabilities of normies, and force them to use steam-powered (if petro-chemically heated steam-powered) engines. Also, commuter trains, if they can be transferred from the restricted, or “short line” tracks, could be equipped with generators and continue to be used.

So I was going down a long, DARK, foggy road a few days ago, and realized if we’d had a grill-mounted radar (basically backing radar mounted to the grill, rather than the rear bumper), we’d be a LOT safer.
So, I submit that grill-mounted radar be part of a vehicle’s standard gear, even if it’s normally kept shut down. On a related note: Marine Radar (such as Furuno Radar). I know marine radar can show you quite a bit, but the usefulness in my experience for land-based nav is limited; Not just no GPS, but not even roads marked, just major navigational landmarks. ¿Is there a way to modify them so they are as useful on land, as they are on the water? |

What vehicle serves you in what situation is largely a matter of what you are actually doing; Evasion and survival situations you would want to move very fast, for a very long time, and not be encumbered at all; Things like the dirt bikes, civilian ATV/Off-road vehicles, etc. Domination and devastation (taking back territory from the skin jobs), you bring the tanks, the big rigs, the massive, land-cruising battleships. For search and rescue/salvage and recovery, the medium-range is preferable, such as the hummers and other heavier ORV’s, lighter supply vehicles (box trucks), even technicals (civy vehicles and unarmored militry vehicles that have been converted into light-armored vehicles, comparable to gun trucks).
