Timberrattler's Warhammer
Aug 30 2010, 12:08 AM EDT
This is my latest creation. The picture here is a jacked up version of a melee weapon anyone could make. What you need: 1) 18" segment of 1" in dia. black pipe. 2) 1" dia. pipe T. 3) 1" pipe cap. 4) 2 1" pipe plugs. With an investment of $13 at Home Depot (I built mine with parts I found in my garage) you've got a serviceable melee weapon that you could put together in a minute. Seriously if you can un-screw a jar of peanut butter you can make one of these. To make my model I drilled a hole in the end cap and added a eye bolt. Instead of a bull plug on the back side of my T I added a 1" to 1/4" reducer and added a 1/4" bolt and filed it down to a point. Then I shot it with some good quaility olive drab paint and added a paracord grip. The advantage of this weapon is that its hollow so you can fill it with survival gear. I added a 3" folder Gerber knife, a mini lighter, an assortment of zip ties and a mini flashlight. Other options? Unscrew the cap and one of the plugs and fill it halfway with sand or charcoal. Zip tie a piece of cloth on one end and you could pour dirty water in through the top and it would come out the bottom filtered, clean and ready to be purified through tablets or boiling. 34 out of 34 found this valuable. Do you?

"I like it. What's the weight? "I own framing hammers with wood handles and its heavier than they are. I own Dead On's all steel framing hammer and its just slightly heavier than it. Akerris who used to be a regular around here and was sharp when it came to melee weapons once told me that a warhammer would probably be the best bet for someone with little experience with hand to hand weapons. That'd be me. It would have been lighter with another kind of handle but this handle has its advantages. One being you most likely won't break it and another being that if you swing too wide you'll still hit 'em with a metal pipe. Do you find this valuable? |

For the same reason a machete is very versatile in the woods a hammer is versatile in urban areas. Nice tool T-Rat. Do you find this valuable? |

The best part with it is that it is made of stuff that will be left around and an awful lot of it too which will solve any durability issues. Is it possible to dismantle it or have you glued it together or something? (having odd pieces of pipe at your disposal is never a bad thing.) Do you find this valuable? |

"The best part with it is that it is made of stuff that will be left around and an awful lot of it too which will solve any durability issues.Everything is screwed together hand tight. Meaning I didn't torque anything with a pipe wrench. I did that so it would be easy to use as storage and as an improvised water filter. Want a two handed hammer? Un-screw the head and re-attach it to longer piece of 1" pipe. If you came across a plumbing supply store post-Z you could arm an entire settlement with the tools you'd find there. You could take a pipe cutter and a pipe threader and knock out piles of 18" segments and add various pipe fittings to make durable weapons. Do you find this valuable? |

besides that, if you needed to make a water system, you could pretty much do the same thing, use a standard size like 18". its easier to replace pipes when they're all the same size, fewer custom cuts to make.

Solid design.Adding a loop to the end as well as some lead shot to both ends would make make it even more effective. Do you find this valuable? |

"Solid design. Thanks brandon. I plan on making a lariat out of paracord to put on the end and I'm also going to add a carbiner so you can attach it to a belt loop or belt. The paracord is dual purpose. It makes a good grip and if you're in a situation where you need a some cord you can canabalize it off your weapon. Would I be getting a little too "tacticool" if I attached a flashlight to it? LOL. Do you find this valuable? |

I like it. I gotta say the single best thing about this is it's multi-purpos aspect. My recommendation: *I would be to paint the INSIDE with some sort of non-lead-paint. If you needed it for water purification, you'd not have to worry rust. *Instead of the lighter (or an addition to it), Magnesium fire starter? Would that fit? I'm not to sure about it's reaction to the metal with the pipe but if you could you might want to insulate it with Wax Paper. *Extra Batteries might come in handy as well. I like what Brandon added. Lead shot, or something, to balance it out. Then again: you can just leave it as is & individuals can customize it to their will. Gread job TR! Do you find this valuable? |

"Maybe cotton balls to keep things quiet?@Carnack @Freelancer47 Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'd like to see what some of the other members could do with this design. Like I said earlier if you can screw on and screw off a lid on a jar of peanut butter you could probably make the basic model. Thats minus the spike and minus the eye bolt on the end of the haft. I used an electric drill to mount the eye bolt and a bench grinder to sharpen the spike. Do you find this valuable? |

"That thing is freaking awesome! I stayed out of the build your own weapon contest because I don't have a garage or a welder or anything. But I never thought about something like this. I may build something along these lines now, but I will have to change it up a bit for originality. Do you find this valuable? |

Damn Timber this is a really good idea! Seriously, its multipurpose, light weight, easy to construct, its just about perfect. I especially like how you can store things inside, thats always great. Im not very good at these things but im just wondering, would it bend possibly if you hit something with it? Do you find this valuable? |

However thats the beauty of something so inexpensive. If you bend the pipe beyond it being useful anymore you can un-screw the head and end cap and replace it with a new section of pipe. This is the first of hopefully many more projects involving builing apoc melee weapons. I watched "The Road Warrior" wayyyyy too much when I was a kid. lol. Do you find this valuable? |

NICE!!! I'm on it...lolI was thinking of something similar; I have this old spear head (not so much for z-poc, but to have something cool I build...hahaha) I was going to attempt to thread the end of it, and attach it to a 36" length of pipe, and warp it up all cool and what not. Never even occurred to me that I could make my own from complete scratch. I think you've opened up Pandora's Box for me my friend. I'll show you what I come up with, but "war hammer" will definitely be on there...too cool of an idea with too many uses to not build one just for the sake of me not being the one that came up with it. So I'm going to snatch your idea, and modify it to suit myself. Thanks man! Do you find this valuable? |
