What alloy would you make it out of? Do you have knife making experience, including proper heat treating? Do you find this valuable?

I've been keeping my eye out for somewhere to get this knife made. It's about as close to the ultimate survival knife as I could design, but unfortunately my current financial situation does not include enough wiggle room to afford what most custom blade-smiths would have to charge for it.

It's like they say, I suppose, "You can have it fast, good and cheap... but you only get to pick two." LOL

Depending on how thick you wanted the blade, the fabrication wouldn't be too difficult, the biggest Issue I have is finding a heat treat oven big enough for the projects I want to do. Do you find this valuable?

"Depending on how thick you wanted the blade, the fabrication wouldn't be too difficult, the biggest Issue I have is finding a heat treat oven big enough for the projects I want to do."
Well the BLADE is only 3/16 inch thick, but the blank may have to be 3/4 inch thick at the beginning, because I want the handle to be solid steel and milled with the blade all in a single piece. The idea is to make the handle about an inch longer than I want it then saw that inch off, bore out a hollow cavity in the handle, then have the mouth of the cavity threaded with the sawed off part milled and threaded to serve as a butt cap.

The finished product would be kinda like these, but in a kukri with a sawback and gut hook:
http://www.chrisreeve.com/onepiece.htm
http://www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_detail.html?s=SCHF2

I've been thinking that maybe just shaping the blade and handle out of 3/16 inch plate, and then building up the thickness of the handle with welding might be easier, but then I'd wondered whether it would be possible to get a nice clean handle that way, clean enough to hollow out like I described above. Of course, I could always use welding to OVERbuild the handle, then grind it away until I'd reached the finished shape that I wanted.

I'm not too worried about heat treating, if I can get the fabrication done at a reasonable price, there's a place where I can get it heat treated locally... or I could even take it back to the school where I did my welders training and heat treat it myself if I really, really had to.

98% of the cost would be your handle. You'd be better off having a full tang and making some scales to throw on the sides.

Welding to build up the handle would also be difficult. The more hardenable a material is the lower it's weldability (I **** you not, that is a legitimate term) So you'd risk the welds cracking from stress, or the metal warping from an uneven heat input.

I'm guessing

tanelece steel = Stainless Steel

and titanium is actually spelled correctly.

Stainless steel isn't a horrible choice by itself, it's Titanium that exposes him, There aren't any alloys of titanium that are really suitable for knives, it's used as a gimmick to make un-informed people buy the product.

Yes, make the blade as long as possible out of 440 stainless and be sure whack it a few times as hard as possible to test durability.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzV6J3SQ8Qs

But if you decide to take the titanium route, you could find someone with a Water Jet cutter to cutout the blank, be sure to stand as close to the billet as possible, and with the titanium not submerged at all.

See I love how you are totally ignoring my comments.

I can only assume you are trying to say that you'd be forging. Which does not result in a stronger blade and would only serve to destroy a perfectly good piece of titanium.
