Think I'm going to make one of these.
May 10 2011, 10:52 PM EDT | Post edited: May 10 2011, 10:52 PM EDT
So I was trying to think of interesting ways I can decorate my apartment when I recalled seeing this pic. I don't know how its going to turn out, but I have decided to put together my own "In Case of Zombies - Break Glass" box.

But unlike the pic, I wanted something more than an airsoft gun in a shadow box. So, I found a steel 26x14 fire extinguisher cabinet on eBay and surprisingly, I ended up winning with an $11 bid.

Now where do I go from here?

1 - Should I put a real gun in it? I am leaning that way. Of course, I would remove a necessary component, such as the firing pin, or at least put a trigger lock on it.

2 - If I do put a real gun in it, what do I use? The door is only 24 inches tall, and minimum length shotguns/rifles are 26 inches. However, I was able to take the grip off my Mossberg 500 JIC and reassemble it inside the box. Or do I use a handgun? What else should go in the box? A blade? A copy of the ZSG? What?

3 - Am I going to look like a total nerd with an "In case of Zombies" box on my wall? Is this the dumbest idea I've had to date?

It definetly won't make you look like a kid with an airsoft gun inside with a plastic knife. But I'd worry more about it being a danger to someone who breaks into your apartment and see's free weapons on the wall. Do you find this valuable?

That is one thing I thought of, which is why I would render the weapons inoperable or trigger locked. It could also be something of a diversion. The thief goes for my decoration and all he gets is a non-firing gun. Meanwhile all my real guns are hidden away in the safe. Or if he waits till i get home and points said gun at me, I'll know it won't fire. Do you find this valuable?

Just do what my family does, and hide your weapons in normal places. Then if someone breaks in, just let Dr. Browning cure their severe case of scumbaggery. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

What if they just steal it? that will suck and there goes $1000 of your new zombie kit. Not to mention dealing with filing a police report and explaining to them where and how your rifle/handgun went.

$1000? Good God man! No way I would put a G worth of anything on my wall! I'm thinking cheap here. I'm not gonna put a pair of Colt Gold Cups in there. And if I had a break in, I would have to file a police report anyway. If they took whatever was in my little decorative cabinet and left my TV I would be happy.

And I have taken a few home security measures. Even if I'm not home, thieves are going to have enough to worry about already.

I think it is a cool way to decorate your place, but not really practical. I think having an airsoft pistol, plastic knife and a ZSG is kind of lame. So without actually wanting to put a firearm in the cabinet I don't see the point.

Maybe you could just put a new pair of underwear and a bottle of jack inside?

I would put a "Non-Gun" in there, it would be just for show wouldn't it? Like you don't want to use it for defense? 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Exactly right. Its not about being practical. I have defense covered already.

I'm starting to think that the answer to my third question is "yes".

Anyone watch the first season of Terminator, the sarah Conner Chronicles?

In the second or third episode she was remodeling their new house, basically she wallpapered over an alcove in the wall with a pump action in it.

I agree with Sharpie. A Zombie Box on your wall that includes a firearm (even if, just for security reasons, you only use a replica or airsoft model of some gun that you actually own) may make you look nerdy, but it can't POSSIBLY make you any nerdier than the guy who lines his walls with comic books or action figures or star trek / star wars memorabilia.

Go for it, dude, and revel in your nerdiness. LOL

Airsoft gun, or non firing gun.

Some airsoft guns look very real (minus the orange tip), you probably wouldn't know they aren't real until you're holding them. And they can be pretty cheap. I wouldn't care if it was a Hi-Point, I don't like the idea of putting any firearm out there to be "smashed and grabbed".

If most shotguns/rifles are too big, I'd go with two matching pistols. Might be silly, the whole "dual wielding" thing... But hey, it's for fun.

BTW, a 26x14 box should be almost 30" on the diagonal, so even if the door is a little smaller, a 26 inch shotgun/rifle should fit just fine on an angle, shouldn't it?

I think the odds of a home intruder having the same model weapon as I would be somewhere close to those of getting hit by lightening.

My Mossberg is about 28 inches long and it doesn't fit unless you take the grip off.

Today I was thinking about those fancy gun cabinets that some people have. The kind with the big panes of etched glass and carvings of deer and sh!t. Guns are no more secure in one of those than in one of these contraptions.

Came up with a couple more ideas. I found blank-firing replicas of many guns for under $150. Then I found a dummy AK receiver for $28 from Century, designed to be used to build a display AK. But AK parts kits are over $250. More than I want to spend on this.
