Barbed wire will work if that's your ony choice but it's very easy to get over. A better option would be "C" wire or Concertina Wire aka. Razor Wire is much better.
Any other suggestions?

RE: Barbed Wire for defense

1) Barbed wire is great for perimeter defense. All you need is a few rolls, some buddies, hammers, and nails/staples. Wrap it around trees and use staples to keep it from sliding up or down. You want a tight fence, however, as a loose roll will rust away in a year or two (ground contact).
There is no cheaper way - so long as the area is forested - of protecting land.
2) Everyone here needs to get past the idea that walls are for keeping things out. Walls are for slowing things down. A few lines of barbed wire in a short outer fence (6' or so) with a high fence (12' +) about 4' in will create a happy warning + kill zone area. Zed will set off your tin can alarms before topping the first fence - and you have plenty of time to stab (long spear) or shoot him. Realize that letting Zed pile up outside or your wall and it will eventually fail. Use it to eliminate the Zed from safety.
3) Razor wire is more difficult to set up (in time, tools, and money) and has a shorter lifespan (rusty barbed wire still grabs and holds - rust razor wire looses most of its edge. Also, there is the question of availability.
For the cost of one or two roll of special order razor wire you could fill a closet with rolls of barbed wire and the tools to stretch it.
Also - someone mentioned plywood on windows. Pre-cut your plywood (I use OSB - press board) to fit inside of your window frames. It looks better and you will already have it ready to go in (test fit it a time or two - claim "hurricane prep" or some BS if the neighbors look at you weird). Most importantly, however, since it is screwed in flush, there is nowhere to get a hand hold without taking out the screws first.
