Remember tips and tricks are found out by experimentation with various new tools and items. This human ingenuity is what has allowed us to survive for how long we as a species have. Don't always follow the "ideal" weapon type because it may just be hype instead of a good idea. Research new ideas and look for interesting new methods.

Another bit of information you may not be aware of is the idea that there are no current zombie threats to humanity. While it is essential to be prepared, you have time to experiment and train and find where you feel comfortable. Use this planning period to make yourself more creative, and potentially more effective at surviving.

Also the book aforementioned is one of the most reliable sources of information regarding zombies, that is almost all of what it entails. Zombies. This is a good thing as there are so few books that legitimately adress the problem, however it is necessary to suppliment what you've already learned from The Ultimate Zombie Survival Guide with books on survival in non-zombie scenarios. These books have so many interesting tricks to help you thrive in diverse situations, and zombies can be as diverse and catastrophic as anything.

One solid resource to help you in a zombie scenario is your brain. This is the most important weapon, tool, tip, trick, etc. you will EVER find. Period. Think of new ways to get rid of a zombie, thing of new ways to protect yourself, think, think, think. Keep your head working and thinking and there will be few situations that you can't survive.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TIPS, TRICKS, TOOLS.

-- STEP ONE: BE PREPARED! Let the poor wretches risk their lives in town fighting over scraps (which they didn't think about until it was too late) while the zeds walk up on them. Be prepared first, before it happens, that gives you an advantage: everybody else is going to be the one running into a zombie infested Wal-Mart. There's no use in saying to your buddies on Z-Day, "yeah, I was on this site where they talked about when zombies attacked" if you are still just as unprepared as the rest of the population.

--Know how you get infected. The most common theory: Like any known blood-borne pathogen, the Z-virus (a generic name for the many fictional and theorized pathogens that cause zombification) can be transmitted through any bodily fluid exchange. If a Z's blood lands on an open wound on your body, you will get infected. The usual way of infection of this type is to be bitten by a zombie as they attempt to feed or kill (theorists are still unsure as to whether a zombie acutally must feed on human flesh to survive or if it is just an instinct to kill). Even certain contact (eg. intercourse, medical care) with an infected person before they are fully "turned" can pass on the infection.

--Know how to kill a zombie. Most enthusiasts agree that the only surefire way to kill a Zed is to destroy its brain or brain stem. They feel neither pain nor fatigue so shots to its body will only slow it down. Blow off their legs, and you have an "ankle biter" - a zombie that still crawls toward you. Obviously, shredding a zombie's entire body will prove effective; if things are no longer attached, they cannot function; however keep in mind the danger of infection from fluids and the waste of ammunition.

--Know the state of your world. Immediately after a full blown zombie infection in your town, there will most likely be panic, rioting, looting, traffic jams on an epic scale, police/military response; not to mention the number of zombies about. Do not plan on driving to your local Wal-Mart to grab supplies... thousands of others already have the same idea. Prepare in advance, even so much as a simple BOB (Bug Out Bag): a small collection of non-perishable food, water, first aid supplies, a map, flashlight with batteries; just your general natural disaster rediness kit is better than nothing.

--Keep in touch. Having no contact with the outside world is not only antisocial, during a zombie outbreak, it would be downright suicidal. Keep a portable radio with shortwave capabilities to listen to emergency broadcasts (if there are any). Having a CB (citizen's band) radio is also a great idea. They are easily available and allow you to communicate with other surviviors. Keep a book with Morse Code handy, possibly a translation dictionary if you are not fluent in the other languages around your area.

--Stay armed. Weapons are one of the biggest subjects of discussion on this wiki. No matter which side(s) you agree with, everyone agrees at least that to face a zombie outbreak unarmed is a huge mistake. Keep plenty of ammunition, keep in mind what ammo is plentiful in your area, and don't over do it because you think having 13 guns on your person at all times is cool. Not all of us are Alice from Resident Evil.

-- This is only a short introductary list. Check out the other areas of this wiki for more detail on the subjects above.

Wiki Call-Signs

There is no abstract available for this page revision.

What will you do when the power goes out?

Almost everything in our daily lives depends on electricity. I was looking more to solar/ wind/ hydro-electric but man power is one way to sustane power that i didnt think of! good going

Mehow: Most (to my knowledge) power generators, even those in power stations, generate power from spinning magnets (e.g. a dynamo).
I actually built one in my physics class and you really don’t need a lot of stuff (but what you do need I suspect you need a lot of if you want to build an industrial one). Anyway my point is that you can build dynamos at home quite easily (Google for proper instructions) and any materials you need can be collected from raiding your local school. Once you have a dynamo you can generate power through any means that will spin the magnet.
For example in power stations (coal, gas, nuclear) they heat up water which turns into steam, as it rises/falls it turns the magnet and you get power.
So I would basically build my dynamo (or buy/loot one if possible) and rig it to a tread mill. This would be our reliable yet small energy source, used wisely for things not requiring much electricity. However my main method of electrical generation would be the burning of anything I can lay my hands on (including corpses!) to heat a container of water, the steam of which would be directed up a chimney where the dynamo is placed. The only problem with this is the unreliability of fuel (thus the tread mill) and the possibility of toxic fumes (I hope they would go up the chimney). I think what I just said is possible but bare in mind that its mostly based on one physics lesson about 3 months ago.
Ooh! Just thought of something else. The boiling of water would work as a distillation process, so if the normal water supply goes dodgy or something the steam condensation can be drunk.
Solar is deffinatly the way to go, you can heat water, and it can recharge banks of batterys all day long.
Or windmills that are very low to the ground, place them all the way around your structure designed so the propellers only miss the ground by a few feet then you get power generated and can kill zombies as they approch the blades. :)

SuperSoldierRCP- problem with water is fire and unless u have alot of propane, gasonline, or dont mind burnin wood and producting smoke thous giving away you location how do u plan to do that. Solar is good but requires someone with through knownlege and wind takes A HUGE amount of effort i think man, gas, or hydro is best or you can make REC generorator if u know how

StrykerPez:There are plenty ways to spin a generator... wind, human, water, engine, etc. However, the problem lies in that the average generator is designed to spin at 3600 rpm exactly to produce the 60hz sine wave in American AC power. Some use gearboxes to achieve 3600rpm generator arbor speeds but allow a lower input speed (for use on tractor PTOs for example). If spun at a lower speed, a generator will still produce power, but it won't be 120v and the frequency will be off wave. It will light a standard incandescent bulb, probably not a fluorescent though, and will spin solid state motors at a lower rpm but I wouldn't try to run anything with IC circuits or controls (computer, radio, tv). Now if your electronic device uses a AC to DC adapter (black chunky thing that goes in the wall) to charge its batteries, then you could use that. An option to provide constant 120v 60hz power to sensitive electronic devices is to use a battery backup (found at any electronic retailer). Get several of these, link them in parallel, and you will have power even if the sun is behind a cloud or the person pedaling your generator bike gets tired, or you switch off your engine powered generator to avoid detection. On another note, a 12 volt (nominal voltage, actual voltage is closer to 14.4v) alternator pulled out of a car can be spun at variable rpms if you find one with an internal voltage regulator (most newer alts). The following is a longer term solution: Raid a parking lot near your stronghold, pull several alternators, all the batteries, and the headlights and taillights off the cars. Build vanes for propellers from metal debris lying around and using supplies from a hardware storeattach your makeshift propellers to the pulleys of the alternators with a belt (large pulley on propeller to small pulley on alternator - increaces speed). Mount these contraptions on the roof of your stronghold. Run a hot and a ground wire to the batteries that are connected in parallel (more amps, same volts). Then run wires around your base and connect the headlights outside as emergency search lights and use the red taillights inside to preserve night vision.

Local Survivors - Tell Us Where You Live

When the zombies come, it's good to know where the other survivors will be. If we humans are not physically prepared accuracy, being mentally able to shoot your s.o., or knowledge is useless. Here we will discuss training regiments you can do at home a gym or a local park.

First begin with some jumping jacks do as many possible try to make it a even number e.g,m ending with 5 or 0 to make doubling it later easy. Then some sit ups then some pushups then finsh up with a 30 minute rest and running a mile. After that you have your numbers double the excersises in a week. Shorten the mile run's time as much as possable. After a month of this you migh not be ready for Z day, but you will be able to last longer then most. After 2 months add excerises which in 2 months I will put on here. The ability to run for extended period has been one of the most valued physical abilities for millenia. Try just running a mile down your road, resting for thirty seconds, and running back once a day. Try to work up to at least 6 1/2 minute miles. If the zombies are runners, you'd better be, too.

Fit to Fight: Preparing for the worst.

by Never2Prepared (strength coach, Jiu-Jitsu student, National Strength Coaches Assosiation member)

For Fitness, the ideal work out regime would be based off of short, explosive movements crossfit style (www.crossfit.com). This style of exercise is used by military, SWAT and mixed martial arts competitors and is growing in popularity every day. The goal of this style of fitness training is to be able to do multipe max-effort activities (club a zombie to death, drag a buddy to safety, club another zombie to death, sprint 400m to save other buddy, club zombie to death, drag buddy to safety...) Multiple back-to-back max-effort activities. This training is high intensity, multiple muscle groups, done to exhaustion with very short rest periods. The intent is to develop the bodies ability to generate force, recover, and generate it again, all while building up lactic acid tolerance and “true” fitness. Exactly the type of true fitness one would need as one of the Survivors.

As a comparison:

Strength:
Pros: Highest Max force generation. The key to this work out will be to develop max force, and then be able to recover from it. Think of multiple hand-to-hand combat sessions with minimal rest in-between. A strong man can pummel the life out of a Large Zombie, perhaps, but he can’t pummel the life out of 20 or more Zombies. His max force generation specialty will become a liability as he exhausts himself with limited ability to recover. The endurance athlete maybe able to trounce 20+ zombies, but they would have to be children, or small women. What we’re aiming at here is for a medium sized survivor to have the fitness level to conduct multiple melee attacks with minimal rest, followed by a hasty retreat on foot, and the ability to do it all again if needed.

In my opinion, you will never need the endurance to run 5 miles at max speed. Sure, you’ll need the fitness to complete it, but baring worst case scenarios, you won’t be followed by zombies moving at a high rate of speed. You may need some faster long-distance speed to out run a less-than-ethical band of survivors, but you won't out run their 7.62 rounds. On the other hand, having max speed to take cover is a more useful trait to have. Again, the key here is to generate max force, and then recover quickly. From a running point of view, this would be training to run 400m intervals. Run 400m, rest 30 to 60 seconds, run another 400m, and repeat to meet fitness goals. (or 100, or 200...) It's why our military is moving to cross-fit style fitness. Combat is 3-5 second rushes, short intense activity, with minimal rest, done back-to-back over time. This anerobic fitness is NOT addresed through max-effort aerobic distance running.

The Get Fit BASIC Plan:

If you don’t have a general level of fitness, start with a basic weight training program and cardio routine. Stick to heavy, basic, compound movements. These will stimulate the most functional strength. Doing high rep curls with a cable machine may make you look pretty, but unless the Zombie horde is really impressed with your bicep peak, it’s really a functionless exercise.

Compound Basic Movements:
Stick to the bench press, Dips, Barbell shoulder presses, and Pull ups. A warm up followed by 3 sets of 10. These simple basics will give you the foundation to do about anything. Really, even at an advanced level, these four exercises (plus deadlifts) are all you really need for “strength”. Also, don’t forget your “real power” (legs) and your core! These are where “real strength” come from!

Core Strength:
Swinging any instrument of death, or any hand-to-hand style combat will depend greatly on your abdominal/oblique/back strength. 100+ crunches don’t do much here, so work on adding strength to this area. Hanging knee raises, hanging leg raises, hanging side crunches are all excellent. Also hanging knee to elbows, or hanging feet to hands are also good. Sit ups with weight on a decline bench are also good. Anything that promotes muscle failure in 10 or less reps is what you want.

Legs:
With out a strong set of legs, the upper body is useless. For all around strength, the dead-lift is the best here. Any activity, to include zombie slaying, done on two legs is dependant on the strength of those two legs. A zombie fitness routine with out dead-lifts is flawed at best.

Cardio:
Easy pace jogging between 0.5 and 2 miles is all you need right now. For this plan, a four day split is ideal with a 3x10 routine. Just warm up with a light jog, light stretching, and light strength work. Then do the work out to 100% max effort. The intent is to do it for time, with the same weight and reps each time, and try to improve your total time each time you try it.

An example:

Work Out 1: (5 sets of the following, for total time, no rest)
Deadlift 50% of max, 15 reps.
Hanging knee ups, 10 reps.
Dips, 10 reps.
Pull ups, 5 reps.

Simple routine?
The key here is to do them all back-to-back with no rest. All 5 sets, all 4 exercises, back to back to back. Vomiting is not uncommon during this type of fitness training. The intent is to fatigue each muscle group, slowly fatiguing the entire body. This places stress on the bodies ability to generate force, while tired. It also places stress on the bodies ability to recover energy. It also develops the bodies ability to deal with lactic acid (what makes you sick and sore).

Even more specific to Zombie Slaying, hand-to-hand style:

Work Out 2: (5 sets of the following, for total time, no rest)
15 Crunches:
10 Push Ups:
5 Pull ups:
100m sprint.

They look very simple, to some one who hasn’t trained this way. Give it a shot, and you’ll soon learn that this max-effort, high-intensity, no-recovery training will take your total fitness to new levels. Also, feel free to change and adapt each work out to your liking. If you have favorite exercises, add them.

The Actual Zombie-Slaying Fit-to-Fight Work Out: Again, a 4 day split.

Day 1:
General total-body weight lifting, like the basic work out.
Day 2:
Interval sprints. 100m, 200m, 400m, or 800m.
Day 3:
Extreme fitness work out as addressed above.
Day 4:
Light 2-3 mile run, or off. Here is my general plan that was designed by myself and a personal trainer:
Sunday: Day off (couple mile hike or 800y swim or 1.5m run, basically a short easy exercise)
Monday: Strength Training. Usually 3-4 sets of 6-8 reps. I use the Lateral pull down, leg press, leg curl, shoulder press, weighted pull ups, chest press, abductor and adductor. I then usually hop in the pool and swim a 500 to cool down.
Tuesday: Swim day. I swim 3000-4000 yards using the combat swimmer stroke (CSS). 200y, stretch, 300y stretch more and hydrate/go to the bathroom, 2500-3500y, stretch.
Wednesday: Run day. I run 5 miles usually. It takes me around an hour total. I run 1/4 mile, stretch, run 3/4 mile, stretch a lot and hydrate a bit, then run 4 miles, then stretch ALOT.
Thursday: Same as Monday
Friday: Mix day. I basically do the PAST test at a medium rate. (I swim 50y underwater, 500y swim in about 10m, 1.5m in about 11m, 15 pull ups, 75 sit ups, 75 push ups, 75 flutter kicks). I'm planning on getting 330/330 points on the test.
Saturday: I do some physical activities like rock climbing, play racket ball, go to the pool with friends and swim, go hiking)

My routine is not just for building muscle and endurance, but also to get my body used to stressful activities every day. If you want to use it as an exercise program, space out the days so your body can rest and recover. I also do about 150 push ups and situps throughout my day, 40 before I get in the shower, 30 after I get back from class, 40 while hanging out in my best friends dorm room, 40 before I take my night shower. I want to get a pull up bar really bad so I can do 10 pull ups when ever I do my situps/push ups.
I also eat lots of protein with little fat. I go to Subway almost every day for either lunch or dinner since they have $5 footlongs which is good for my college budget.

Zombie Combat

When the Zombie apocalypse begins, you might be in a country where guns and ammo are not accessible. Like in Europe. And it is in times like these that you need to fight with everything you got.

Combating The Dead with guns..
Simple tip.. one shot one kill...but as a caveat only when practical (i.e perched in a good high vantage point).
But first and foremost, your goal should be survival! Better to aim center mass to at least knockdown your undead opponent, than to sit there, hands shaking trying to draw a bead on the head!
Ensure that the weapon you have is zeroed to your eyes. Scavanging can be used as a last resort, but an unexperianced shooter can get themselves or their friends killed in a deadly engagement. Real life is not like Hollywood where every gun a person picks up is automatically zeroed.

So here are a few pointers.

 Try breaking bones and jaws

Wear a long sleeve t-shirt and a high collar

When holding a zombie, make sure his teeth are facing the other direction

You don't have to completely destroy the zombie. Reduce him to a head and torso Monty Python style and have a good laugh.

And always be wary of getting infected blood on you!

Melee weapons are my favorite. I have never held a gun and I am not going to try it the first time during the zombie apocalypse. And the best weapon I can get here is a kitchen knife. So I am going to stick with melee weapons.
When using melee weapons it is best to choose according to weight. If you can hold a big axe, then you should use it. If you are not strong enough for large weapons, use knifes and lead pipes etc.

Don't fight fire with fire.
When fighting a zombie it is important to remember zombies don't feel pain so if set them on fire they might not
stop. Using moltolov cocktails, plastic explosives, or any other weapons using fire could set your zombie on fire.
A flaming zombie is twice as bad as a normal zombie. It could take minutes for the fire to go out or kill the zombie, so if you see yourself fighting a zombie with a moltolov cocktail empty the bottle and use the bottle as a melee weapon.

Here are some tips when using melee weapons.

Start with quick jabs and short swings

Always go for the head, even with long weapons. Because when you aim for the legs, a large piece of your body is exposed.

 Mind your footwork

If you are fighting multiple zombies, keep them in one line (don't get surrounded)

When using knifes go for the neck to hit the spinal cord.

My favorite gear when going hand to hand with zombies, is leather armor. It is tough to bite trough and is very light. My weapon of choice is bare hands and a kitchen knife because it is light and doesn't need ammo.
I hope this is helpful for those without weapons, happy hunting!:D

Hand-To-Hand Combat
Contrary to what Mark Dacascos so brilliantly displayed us in I Am Omega, martial arts are inadvisable when combating the risen dead. This is tantamount to using one's fists in place of a baseball bat. The only two ways blunt impacts could kill a zombie is through destruction of the brain (it is hard to punch through a skull) or severe torsal bruising sufficient to induce internal hemorrhaging (requiring even more force). Your best bet would be to go for the head, and wear heavy boots if you can. DO NOT, however, take it into your head to go Keanu on Zack if you have no idea what you are doing. No matter how many times you have watched Matrix Reloaded, you will die a swift and agonizing death.

quickrace89: While hand-to-hand can be an ammo-conserving, renewable, impressive (your fellow survivors may find your close-up tactics awe-inspiring) and enviromentally-friendly way of dispatching zombies, it can prove to be fatal if you don't know the strengths and weaknesses of a zombie. Sure, they're a bit slower than humans, but they can hit far harder than we can, which requires you to be very fast and agile, otherwise you could wake up lacking an arm and very, very hungry.

alicestar: a few things that you should remember with hand to hand is that you must always be the first to strike, you don't want to be on the defensive my advice to you is to watch the movie "the protector" it is a good example of how to always be the attacker and it also shows a lot about elbow/ knee and off balance strikes. another thing to remember is that a ZED is going to do everything it can to bite you so you need to be able to control the fight when grappling and on the ground. a lot of you think that Brazilian jujitsu is the way to go but keep in mind that you don't ever have full head control in Brazilian jujitsu so you will die. for the most part keep it short and sweet. charge in, hit hard, break neck or get the hell away!

Dmurl5-

A few things. One, a zombie does not need blood to work, except the case of rage zombies. When you die, your heart stops, thus stopping all blood flow. Two, never, ever try to choke a zombie. This would result in instant death for you, as zombies do not need air. Choking relies on kills through suffocation, and a zombie would not need this luxury of air. Thus, the choking would fail. Three, there are more senses (such as smell) than sight. Don't spend valuable time going for the eyes. And four ties in with the last one, don't spend time breaking bones or jaws. Go for a head shot if possible (The temple is the softest part.) Get it over with and get away.

Klesh-

I admire your courage to go hand to hand with a being that is doing everything possible to eat you or bite you whatnot. a couple of comments and a BIG question. first, WHY DO YOU NOT LIKE USING GUNS? i just want to know. Of course if you are extremely comfortable with hand to hand or don't have a gun or ammo accessible i understand but if you gave me a choice i would take the run of the mill 12 Gauge shotgun or my preference an open iron sight MOSIN-NAGANT. a suggestion if you like close quarters, don't try to be a HERO. grab the shotgun and a saw. Do what you may when combining the two and go at it that way. One 2 3/4 inch to the cranium and problem solved.

wrong

in Britain thats in Europe in the rural areas everyone and their mums has got a gun
corporal parker

McSkullcracken: If you are going to use melee weapons to fight zombies, know your own strengths and weaknesses. If a sledgehammer is too large and unwieldy for you, don’t use it. If you simply do not have the strength to swing a machete or other bladed weapon through a zombie’s neck or skull, try a blunt weapon to crush the skull instead. A one-handed weapon is probably preferable as it gives you a free hand to do other things or, if you are skilled enough, to wield another weapon. Think about practicality when choosing a weapon, not flashiness. For instance, do not use a Katana if you have little to no experience using one or if you are not 100% sure it is real and not a replica. Try a simpler weapon, like a heavy tool. Remember, if it can kill a human with a blow to the head it can kill a zombie.

DustinEchos104: I have said it many times before and I'll say it again, guns are millions of times more effective than any melee weapon you could find, the human skull has evolved to reduce the possibility of crushing trauma to the brain, in buckles in sections so that the force is spread out and wont kill a zombie, you would need to do a full swing with a sledgehammer to actually pulp a brain through a skull. Most of the deaths from head trauma in humans comes from internal bleeding, which won't happen in zombies because they don't need their blood, and concussion, which won't afflict the already dead either. And unless you know know how to hit between those plates mid lunge on every hit, I pity any one with a blade. Even if you try to cut off a head, hard in its own right, the head will keep snapping and infecting. I know that in a fight I wouldn't want all of my footing to be covered in slick, carnivorous enemies and then the clean up afterwards would be the most tedious work of all post Apocalypse Earth. Most death is caused not to the brain, but to the support systems to the brain, if you cut someone badly enough, anywhere on their body, they may bleed to death or drop into shock and have their bodies systematically shut down on them, but that can't happen in a zombie, it has to be brain or nothing.
The answer to fighting zombies is to either a) not fight them, out-think them or b) kill them before they can get close enough to do anything to you. Bows take years of practice and often won't penetrate a skull anyways, crossbows are rarer and take too long to reload, but guns have been perfected over centuries so that children can literally use them to kill, and very quickly at that. If you are fighting zombies you won't need military grade fully automatic machine guns, all you'll need is a simple, accurate single shot rifle to hit them in the head, and if you are going to be fighting close quarters you will finally have a use for the multitude of handguns laying around after most of the worlds population has been eaten. A round from a pistol to the head will either bounce around inside the head, pulping the brain or blow out the back of the skull taking most of the brain with it, both sure fire ways to make sure it wont get back up again. The only reason to have melee weapons is because you are somewhere that you don't have access to any ammo, such as England, or for the occasions when you can't slide a clip of ammo into a pistol fast enough, but you do miraculously have the time to pull out an effective sword or club, after having let zombies overrun you from the kill zone which extends out hundreds of yards with a gun, unlike the 5 feet you get with a machete.
Another important thing to remember is that zombies aren't the only things you will fight, if you come across someone who thinks that you have more food than you need, or women, or booze, or just about anything for that matter, they will kill you for it. There will be no law except that which is held in your own arms, and if they hold a sawed off 12-gauge in theirs and you have a pair of Bowies, they'll blow you down before you could say uncle. One of the main driving forces of human progress is the fact that you can never let anyone who is against you have anything you don't, if they have a knife, don't try to box them to death, if they have a shot gun, don't think that knife will get you anything more than robbed, if they have a rifle, don't think your pistol will cut it from 300 yards away, they don't even need to hit you in the head, hit you pretty much anywhere with a gun in a world with no hospitals and you're a goner, especially if you intend to continue to fight zombies in that state.

zombie: MGNUARRGUHZAA! *moan*

Hell_Razor: I agree with DustinEchos104. Melee combat with a zombie is dangerous to any person who attemps it. However, I would like to point a few things out.
1) Unlike myself, many people, and not just Americans, live in parts of the world where civilian firearm access is limited. Not only does this cause issues of availiblity, but it also hampers a person's exposure to firearms and firearm safety. Unless a citizen of Britain or Germany has served in the armed forces or the police, they are likely to have never picked a gun up in their life.
2) Every person with half a brain knows which end goes bang. Yet firearm safety and effective shooting take time and practice. The last thing you want to do is put a gun in the hands of someone who's only combat experiance is Halo, and expect them to hit a moving target as small as a Zed head. Even worse, they can do some serious harm to those they are with unintentionally.
3) Firearms are loud. The undead utilized all five senses in a much more efficient fashion than normal sight-dependant people. Unless you want to pay 200 bucks and give the FBI a background check and two sets of fingerprints to get a license, most people can't get a sound supressor. And take it from an Iraq vet, they don't supress the noise nearly as much as video games make them out to be. You rely on subsonic ammunition to fire correctly, and this can decrease the range and penetration. The crack of a skull or the thud of a head hitting a ground is nowhere near as loud as my AR-15.
4) Firearms require ammunition and cleaning. This can vary from gun to gun, but if you want your weapon to work, you need to clean it regularly. It will do you no good to have your gun jam on you in close quarter combat. And you might as well use your gun as a club if you run out of ammunition.
5) Blades don't need to be reloaded. All you have to do is clean and sharpen them, and all it takes is a rag and a grindstone.

What can't be overstated is that every weapon has its advantages and its disadvantages. Blades or hammers are great for close and personal, but good luck if you can kill anything past your reach. Firearms can deal with multiple adversaries at once at greater ranges, but the sound can carry for miles, attracting unwanted attention. In preparing your arsenal for any sort of violent encounter, you must obtain a mix of weapons for optimal results. For example, come Z-Day, I'm going to rock my AR-15, my XD .45, and a machete. Maybe I'll throw my AK in my backpack in case I need it. You don't need to blow that amount of money on guns like I do. You can pick up a simple pump action shotgun for less than 200 bucks, and carry a hammer.

quickrace89: Hell_Razor, once Z-Day happens the FBI won't really mind whether you buy 50 silencers. This is because most of them will be ZOMBIES. If you really need guns and ammo, then wait until Z-Day has happened, and cut your way into an Army Base. The army won't stop you either: the army doesn't have a Zombie Survival policy.

Hell_Razor: But the point of this site is to prepare the average joe for any zombie encounter, and not just a Class-IV outbreak. Besides, good luck finding a suppressor after Z-Day and all manufacturing has shut down.

Not all fighting skills are hand-to-hand

Yes weapons ARE superior to hand and foot combat in any Zombie related happening but as this article is souly dedicated to the unarmed figth debating the question mentiond above is with out point.
In this part I`d like you to consider the ide that not every fight with the Zombie must end with one of you dead (or dead`er if you please) but rather ponder the ide that you migth just nead to use your arms and legs to move theirs... I think we can all agree that the Zombies preferd stans is walking with its arms stretched out forward as this will prepare it to grab anything that comes within its reach.
I`d also like to mention at this point that what im about to sugest is alot harder than it may sound so practis practis Practis!

The moment your gett within arms reach move (switch if your left handed) your Left arm in a small semi-circle outwards up and in and push Zombies right arm inward to its own body, Once this has been done (and you want this to happen fast) twist your boddy pelvis and up inward to the right and now use your rigth hand to push (NOT PUNCH) Zack hard straig away from you aiming to hit its shouler (if you did the first part rigth Zacks torso ougth to have twisted sligtly inward puting it in a position were its center point of grvaity wont work to its advantage this is key as Zacks ballance is already less than a normal living humans)

The move above is just an example of martial-art that results in the Zombie faling backwars and more to the point AWAY from you. Keep in minde how-ever that this will as I said not kill Zack but it migth just buy you those crutial seconds you`ll nead to excape or better yeyt arm your self to figth the next one ..

Surviver Boyd

Surviving Non-Fatal Injuries

How do you plan to deal with the inevitable friendly-fire injury or broken limbs in your group? Non-fatal but movement impairing injuries within your survivor network will challenge your morality and ingenuity.

Tell us how you would cope ------

PercerveringGenocide: Being as I have no medical backround, i would hope to find a survivor to join my group that does. Though, I've always thought having an ample supply of bandages/gauze/medical tape/penicillin, etc would be vital to long-term survival. As for the immobile, safety in numbers still applies. A broken leg could at least be put into a splint or some sort of acting brace. An arm could be hoisted upright toward the chest with a bag of almost any kind. The healing process would be slow, and not very efficient, but you'll have to deal. I have a friend paralyzed from the waist down, and if not already undead, I'd figure out a way to keep him with our group. I know it might slow us down, but in extreme situations one will find any way of surviving, that's what I love most about zombie theories. It puts mankind's ultimate one, universal trait: survival.

TonyPro: I am formally trained and licensed in CPR and first aid. I would carry a mouth shield at all times, as if I had to resuccitate someone, I wouldn't want to risk infection by putting my mouth all over people. Tourniquets, splints, antiseptics and bandages would be the only other supplies I would carry.
If someone in my group became physichally incapacitated, I would break both their legs...off. That way, if they became infected, they could not become a threat. Unless we were traveling by vehichle, like hell am I going to carry their crippled ass. If I was feeling particularly generous, I'd give them a choice--remove their legs and barricade them well in a room with generous rations and maybe some ammo, or spare them one of my bullets.

AngelaB: I fear losing all humanity to raw survival since it's so hard to get back. Frankly, this is a tough one. So much is situational. For instance, If we have any hope of moving them while they heal, we'll take em. If we can't move them, I'd vote forsetting them up in a upper story of a building, barricading it in, and leaving food and water for 3 days plus an attendant/bodyguard. Frequent return visits to see ifmobility is possible. If it's beyond our ability to heal, we'll leave it up to the person. Do they want to risk the Z lifestyle or go out with a bang?

roxas33: I pretty much agree with AngelaB

vanrulzz:
Well, for immobile injuries, such as a broken leg, we will hole him/her in a car and drive to the nearest building where it would be barricaded enough to last for the healing process (which is probably already where we are staying) As for gunshot wounds, that's why first aid kits and good mobility are ABSOLUTELY VITAL. If you do not have these you can just say bye-bye to your friend that you accidentally shot.

McSkullcracken: As I have no real experience dealing with any sort of serious injury, I do not know offhand how I would deal with such things; and I fully admit that this leaves me unprepared. Yet another reason to consider possible group mates carefully.
However, in this situation, non-fatal becomes an elastic term. Are any hospitals functioning nearby? Anywhere? If not, what levels of experience, knowledge, and available medical technology and supplies does your group possess or have access to? Simply being punctured by a rusty nail could be considered a fatal injury if you have no way to prevent infection. So for those who contribute to this page after me, please make your hypothetical situation apparent (what level of outbreak, status of medical facilities, know-how of group).

crashdown48: non-movement/immobilzing injuries are a dicey area- would the injury otherwise heal? how could you even tell? what we consider classic sports related knee and lower leg injuries (torn ligaments, sprains, etc) will heal on their own, given enough time and rest, and while they may not make you immobile, they will most certianly reduce your agility, speed, and endurance, providing a potentially more dangerous situtation, in which you feel you may be able to move, and thus do not alter your routine or plans to compensate for your injuries. as for injuries in which mobility is not an option, you would have to take into consideration the situtation and/or the stronghold you are in, if any. if you find yourself hurt in a fortified area, there is no reason to not hold up and wait for the injury to heal. other members of your party can handle your expeditionary duties (ie- food and resource scavaging, or hunting), while you take over their domestic duties (ie- weapons and equipment maintence or cooking, anything which you could do in the fortress). If youre on the run, thats another matter. While it isn't always advisable to use mechanized transportation, you may have no other option, and if you have already worked it into your evacuation plan, it will most likely make no difference if you are hurt or healthy. However, if you are moving under human power, be it walking, biking, or other anything else involving your body and fitness level you are pretty much screwed, and the course of action you take will become very dependant on the size and type of the party you are in, as well as your environment. Unless you have taken the time to fully fortify and secure resources, it is inadvisable to sit-tight. Even if it means carrying less resources and moving slower you must press on until such a time where you can be in a secured, safer area. That being said, you cannot just leave a member of your party behind, unless they really, really deserve it.

Bundy747: AngelaB said it best "I fear losing all humanity to raw survival." When confronted with the issues of trying to save a friend or team member one must keep their cool. Dealing with these situations depends on the injury. First off if any of the injuries involve zombie bites there is only one answer…a shot to the head! Friendly fire is a concern which could best be avoided with a proper attack plan, but as we all know sometimes plans don’t always go…well...as planned. First aid rations such as bandages, gauze, and medical alcohol should be ready at hand if your defense location is a store front. Other than cleaning and dressing the wound and keeping the injured person comfortable would be about all you could do. As far as broken bones go, homemade splints would have to do. Survival is the key here, if a friend/team member breaks their leg in the middle of a parking lot while fighting off a zombie horde and they can’t be reached then unfortunately you’ll just have to do the inevitable…leave them. I hate to say it but it’s true…you can’t sacrifice your entire team for one member, nor would I expect anyone to do it for me. However if a rescue is possible make it happen! Remember keep the wounded comfortable, check their condition, and keep your cool. Also it wouldn’t be a good idea traipsing about in a zombie infested city looking for a hospital. It’s just not feasible, the life you save might just be your own!

Crashdown48: Let's also not forget that in the event of a zombie outbreak, the absolute last place anyone would want to be is near a hosiptal, as infections tend to radiate out of them (although more so at the onset then the later stages).

NMMZKI-If one of my team members got bit or srcated i would have no can but to finish him that would be the only way to unless he got shot by a bullet or cut by a knife or machetei would keep him with our trained medical docters and a squad. Now heres somthing differnet like if he fell out of a helicopter or fell when we wolud were driving fast and the door came open and he fell and got crippled there relley nothing to do expect agian finsh him off the burn his body.So if he got killed by nature or zombies i would burn his body.

twinsword- the only medical experiens I have is from playing dark cut and watching world war 2 films, so if I fall on a wooden pole I know how to treat it but if I suffer from any other injuries im pretty dead like if i fell out of a chopper i wood probably crawl in to a dark corner and cry ( yeah, I know its pathetic but thats me)

Rage1Bravo - I have only a small amount of medical training. I have never had to use any of that training in a real world situation, thankfully, however, this is what I think about this topic. Some injuried can heal on their own with a little assistance, such as: dislocated joints, some broken bones, cuts , if dressed properly, etc. Other injuries such as badly broken, disformed bones, severe hemorraging, both internal and external, head injury, etc, unfortunately, need more care and bring up more issues. The best thing to do would be to grab medical books, easy to read lamens terms type stuff, and learn about first aid and immediate trauma care. Think about this, torniquets save lives, but sometime lose limbs. How far will you go to save life, but at the same time slow mobility and functionality? I am combat lifesaver qualified. It is a one week Army class. It taught me a lot about how to keep someone from bleeding out, or prepare a limb to transport the casualty, and how to keep people breathing and such. However, I know, without a trained and skilled surgeon, even a non-life threatening injury can claim the life of someone. Maybe not immediately, but in the long run, in a survival situation, could someone with one leg do anything? Sure, but not if all hell breaks loose. Lose one to save many, or try to save one and risk losing many? We all have a natural survival instinct built into our brains, however, everyone's is different. Where I am now, save one risk many. Zombie survival situation, I don't know, but if it ever happened, I would know then exactly what to do when it happened.

Residentmagnum

To lose a comrade is hard, but life is difficult with many hard choices.
A broken arm could be put in a sling or cut off if bad enough.
Broken legs can be splinted and many items could be turned into cruches.
bullets are an odd thing some say leave it in while others say remove the bullet. this could kill a freind so I would recomend asking your freind what they want, the wound can be cortarised with a hot metal item to stop the bleeding.

Ladders, wheel barrles, bikes pull trailers, large peice of wood all can become stretchers or opperating tables. In all hopes maybe you and your wounded freind found a doctor to help you.

If bitten or mortally wounded it will only be a matter of time. there are three choices. kill your freind, leave him/her for them to change and become an undead, restrain them and hope someone has inveted a cure. the best choice would be to kill your freind then to cut off the head.

Dmurl5:

Since I am licenced to perform basic first aid (training course), this would not be a problem. My group has already designated people's jobs, and I am the medic/leader. Injuries such as minor-moderate scrapes and gashes could be treated easily, hold it above the head to lessen the blood flow until you can treat it with bandages and tape. Major wounds would require a quick stitch job, nothing to bad. Broken limbs would require someone to carry them or "acquire" a vehicle, as I would never abandon a freind. Unless, of course, this wound involved a zombie bite or other type of infection. We've agreed that the only cure is a shot to the head.

The_Professional

Since I am in college for Medical Assisting I have received training in how to treat broken bones, lacerations, hemorrhages and such. Part of my education required that I became certified in First Aid/CPR through the Red Cross which I did with flying colors. I also received first aid training in harsh conditions through the Boy Scouts, splinting with two sticks and what plants act as healing remedies. In the vent of an outbreak I am confident that I could keep a person mobile long enough to find medical attention or proper supplies. But also I suggest keeping a "Field Kit" ready in your B.O.B. Consisting of ace bandages, splints, gauze wraps and squares, plenty of tape antiseptics and antibiotics, pain medication, blood clotting medicine, forceps and scalpels, sutures, itch/burn relief, etc. Also working in a medical office I know that they have on hand an MEE or Medical Emergency Equipment. This contains everything you would need in almost any emergency and by raiding any hospital you could find the means to replenish your supplies and possibly find more.

Spraymachine: If you want some good informational videos, military manuals, and other stuff about first aid/child birthing/surgery/3rd degree burns (basically past how to apply a band-aid), check out this site Operational Medicine. My favorite one is how to suture a wound!

Mastermind22: I may not have medical training, but I have read some medical books on diseases, so at least I could diagnose you. In the case of when a friend is injured severely, the only solution would be to end them. Its dark sure, but you need to survive in a zombie apocalypse and a crippled friend would only burden the group. But in the case of minor-medium injuries, I would try to help him/her. Alas, there is no cure for being a zombie. (other than complete death) There is no way in heck I am going to carry someone either, so they carry themselves, someone else who has more compassion carries them, or they stay and turn into a zombie. (or agree to let me or someone else end them)

Hell_Razor: I'm a Combat Lifesaver, so while I can't do open heart surgery I can do basic assesment and treatment of many combat related injuries. Best thing for anybody to do is remember the ABC rule when dealing with a casualty. A - First and formost is to keep the Airway clear. If the subject is unconscience, his or her tongue may have rolled back and blocked the airway. Tilt the head to prevent this. Be advised that the person may have a spinal injury, so take care when attempting this. B - Breathing, ensure that the airway is clear and the person is breathing normally. C - Circulation. Check for shock by examining capilary refil. Simplest way to do this is to press down on the victims hand and see how long it takes the white spot you left to turn to the natural skin color again. Check for normal pupil dilation as well. Should the victime appear to be going into shock, loosen clothing around the extremities and place them in a cool, dry place. Do not give them food and only small amounts of water. If the victim has a bleeding wound, your first priority is to halt the bleeding. Take a bandage and place direct pressure on the wound. If blood soaks through, place another bandage on top of the original and continue. The vast majority of combat related deaths occur from heavy bleeding, so by keeping that in mind, along with the other basic principles, you should be in half-way decent shape.

Stui: Survival First aid Backpack

1.Band aids, gauze, tape, Ace bandage.
2.Large cotton sheet.
3.Hemostats, penecillin, Morphine.
4.Scalpel. Check out this link to learn more. http://gizmodo.com/374006/self-inflating-tires-do-just-that
This would prevent the classic movie scene where I'm running from some threat and get a flat. Hate it when that happens.
The trunk can hold more than enough supplies to make each trip count and would be strengthened with steel bars over the top and provide security. If the trunk lock breaks the steel bar still holds it down. The headlghts would be replaced with ultra bright LED lights to provide maximum visibility at minimal battery use.The grill would have a ram bar to plow through the undead horde, store windows and drywall. The car can hold up to 5 people which provides more than enough man power to carry supplies and provide cover. The top of the car would have an escape hatch to provide a safe way to exit the vehicle to fire upon enemies or escape. A CB radio provide communication to my home base and other vehicles in the field. As a final last ditch precaution the car would be rigged with 5 pounds of C-4 on a remote trigger. In the event that we are hopelessly doomed by the undead horde or must abandon the vehicle and can't return we can blow the car and any nearby threats.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SuperSoldierRCP:
Make : Bus companys
Model : Dont know when Bus's are made
Year : ? who knows
Purpose : Transport, Assault, Strike & Recon, Transporting goods

Angel_956:

 Make : Ford Motor Company
Model : Expedition EL Limited
Year : 2007
Purpose : Transport, Assault, Strike & Recon.

Modification(s): First I would install a steel mesh onto outside the windows of the vehicle. Adding this would make it a little harder for zombies to break into the glass to get me. I would also weld onto the bed a covering made of aircraft grade aluminum. The bed would now also include a reserve gas tank. I would install self inflating tires (as seen in the article by the "Professional"). A ram bar would also have to be installed although I see no use in risking the condition of your vehicle by needlessly ramming stuff with it so I would also heavily reinforce the tow hooks. I would carry around large sections of heavy gauge chain as well to rip doors off of walls instead of ramming through them (I assume this would greatly reduce the impact and trauma that would be taken by the vehicle). I would install a switch which could disable or re-able the airbags (just in case hitting stuff is required). I could also mount claymore mines all around the vehicle to be used as a last ditch, my car has broken down and zombies are swarming everywhere weapon. I would also install a CB radio in the vehicle. I'd turn it into a technical, by mounting a .50 caliber machine gun on the roof. (.50 cal is ideal for crowd suppression (when you just want to get out - fast), nondead enemies, and weakening barriers). On the bed walls, I would weld rails, rebar, fence poles, or whatever I can find to build up the sides (this is were a lot of weight could come from). There is some razor wire around the local shops that I could take to weave through and around the rails. I'd chop up the tonneau cover, and use it to make seats for shooters and racks in the back wounded (would probably be able to carry 1 or 2 wounded). We would hitch up the open trailer I have to pull more shooters during slow-moving urban sweeps, or for hauling. I'd like to get ahold of one of those police cruiser grills to put on the front after the outbreak, but it is not essential (acquiring one may present a risk of exposure, and I won't want to endanger my team like that for something relatively superfluous.

Alzeran
Make: Chevy
Model: 1 Ton Pickup
Year: 1966
Purpose: Transport/search and destroy assault vehicle
Modifications: First off, I would remove the stock bed and replace it with a step-side box. I would keep the fuel tank behind the seat as so not to worry about it, the standard tank is about a 20 gallon tank. I would replace the 350 motor with a 454 to give it more power for the weight. I would install a winch on both the front and rear. I would then weld 4 foot tall solid steel pannels to the bed all arround, after which I would place two deer stands in the back for guners. I would remove the glass and just put mesh in its place. A horse will not attract attention like a motor vehicle, but if zombies are encountered on a horse, the horse will not stand a chance in a fight and it would be best to continue riding away.
