  • In concern for the average, non-paranoid citizen Now, I understand and accept that those who do not prepare for a tragedy "get what they get", and so on, and so forth; however, that gosh darn human side of me still prevails.

As someone "in the know", what sort of wisdom would you pass on to the average civilian, say, if you were head of some sort of public service announcement team?
I know that the best knowledge of weaponry and combat, the best extreme-survival abilities, and extensive knowledge of agriculture are all something that we on the site strive for, yet not everyone is capable of or has the foresight to master these topics.

And so, the question is, how does the Average Joe survive, besides just being lucky?

(I find that it is important to note the consideration that most people belong to families, possibly with young children, and that they must be accounted for in any civilian plan)

  • average gun lifespan Honestly i don't see guns going anywhere. they will still be here. and if not, they aren't hard to make. My family makes cannons every year. we all get together and set them off on the 4th of July and labor day. if you just sit down and think you can find very easy ways to make weapons. potatoe launcher for examle.

But anyway, i can get side tracked easily. Guns do last forever. To prove it, i have a shotgun that is from 1893. it still fires amazingly. i ave no problem with it. Its even a pump action. nothing has broke on it. and i use it every year for hunting. Also i have a sniper rifle that is from WWII., Relitives that i have that live in West Virginia have an ungodly amount of guns. i know of two that are from the civil war, and they still work fine.

  • Z day
"LOL the G36 portion is hilarious, Its a German made rifle and is the standard rifle of the the Bundeswehr(German military) and Bundespolizei(German Federal Police), yet all it says is that its "commonly used by British Armed Police officers", what?"
Im pretty sure it doesnt mention the fact that Germany uses it so extensively because this thread is for brits. first thing on the page is:
Hi there to all you fellow Brit's, I know most of you have planned around not having any firearm's but just in case you want any, here are the one's you can get after Z-day with a bit of looking around and initiative.

Brits. sure, the g36 is used by Spains armed forces, pero nadie aqui es de espana, entonces no menciono eso.
so im pretty sure hes just talking about weapons available in britain.

  • The panic or is just opportunity
    "
I think you are failing to draw the line between people shopping for presents and people shopping for the things that will keep them alive.

    "
No i am drawing a line between where panic buying and crimes of opportunity start and what community and cultural values play a part in this.

There is a lot of talk about the panic and people going nuts over things so what i am looking for is the catalyst that actually starts that and also how much of what is labeled as panic buying actually outright theft

Christmas shopping is a good starting point as there are a lot of ma and pa joes out there doing their last minute shopping and it was interesting to see how much stock was actually stolen on one of the very busy shopping day of the year. the fact that people used the day and the amount of people to their advantage to steal from the store was also a good reference point to look at social and cultural values of a given location when you look at some numbers like this

Volume of people vs sales vs amount stolen

one would think the more people a store serviced for the day the amount of goods stolen would also increase but this wasn't the case as there were stores that had double the amount pass though them and double the amount of sales but had less actual losses from theft
and that wasn't because of increased security those store categorical have a lower loss from theft over all throughout the year

We hear all the time about people going crazy at sales and doing stupid things just to get a TV but how much of the general community do these people make up?

people that que up for hours in the cold and dark just to buy an item on sale and then climb over other to get what they want or not the average person but it does make for good news articles unlike the people who calmly waited till normal hours and just paid the normal price or until the the store had more of the item for sale

  • Our Newest Generation just screwed?
"Can I ask you to explain this?

I understood (or think I did) up to this point but it seems like you changed topics here. "
Sure. Before television, who were the most famous people? Kings and presidents, politicians? Turn of the century brought movie stars, but they were few and far between.

Who were the rich people? Again, the list I just said, but add in industrialists. People who built companies with hard work.

All of this took time. Years and decades. And the public knowledge of it came from print media and then local radio (broadcasts couldn't go as far, so even breaking news took hours to travel from one end of a country to another.)

Now, not only are people elevated to fame and riches without the years of effort and work, we know about it almost instantly. It used to be big news when four movies opened in the same month. Now, there are four every weekend. The stars are not famous for thirty years. They get three if they are lucky.

Instant information has reduced our attention span. We want something else, something new all the time. With the line between real celebrities and reality being eliminated, we don't want to know about someone who has earned millions. We want their money. We want their life. And because we see other people go from poor to rich in a heartbeat, from obscurity to fame in a day, we want it to happen to us. No, we demand it.

It's like that whole "anyone can grow up to be President" line. It should be qualified with "but the odds are you won't. Get used to being a regular person. It's perfectly fine to live an average life and die in obscurity. That is what most people are destined to do."

It's all connected. Wanting an apocalypse because of anger at those in power, caused by unrealistic expectations brought about by incessant tv and internet coverage of celebrities and reality-tv idiots updated every second.
