"You're omitting diesel and premium/racing fuel there. While glanced over by the general public, they are in many gas stations. And again, at least in the U.S., gas station are literally everywhere. Not to mention, I could take a trip to Philly and knock over the Sunoco refineries, which have zero security. And I mean zero; a news crew drove rihgt into the heart of the place multiple times, even months after informing them about the fact that enough fuel to obliterate the city was just sitting out with no protection."
I couldn't find numbers for diesel. The low uptake for vehicles with diesel makes numbers harder to find. Ditto your "premium" fuel.

But having witnessed many Panic buying sessions in this country due to bad weather, fuel strikes and other reasons, I can tell you that yes, they will be dry in 24 hours. Deliveries are timed to try and match consumption without overfilling the storage tanks. But they don't seem capable of increasing deliveries quickly enough to cope with a Panic.

Whether it's their number of trucks, drivers or simply production issues, they just can't do it.

You might be able to come up with other lesser known sources of fuel, but this article is about the herd mentality that goes along with the Panic. Very few people will think "I need fuel: head to the stockyard." Few have cars equipped to run on these alternatives. The fact that you know of them, where to find them and apparantly have or will have a vehicle that can use them simply means you know about this behaviour and are prepared to avoid it.

  • Panic Panic can also be used to one's advantage.
unfortunately for the people congregating in large groups, there will be little to no controll. Never go to large stores in the very first stages. Never take highways or freeways as a method of transportation, you will be gridlocked. - use the rail lines! who will be driving where trains normally go??? not many. Where do traintracks take you?? lots of places.
You can use the chaos to go to other places such as buddies houses/ rondevous points, to leave the city by foot or car/ railway line. or fortify your house/ apartment. - I used to think apartments were death traps in a zombie outbreak, thinking if any got in the stairwell, they could spread through the building.
If you keep proper security of the building, it'll stand better than many "fortresses". Plus theres enough people where teamwork is possible.

  • Panic about The Panic First of all, don t get me wrong, i m not justifying wall mart plans
    second, to the topic
My opinion is that you are panicing about the panic. Lets take Katrina. Meteorologists say that Katrina is about to happen in xx days. Then happens panic, looting, mobbing, blah, blah, blah. But this happened before the uragan. Was there looting, mobbing, and blah blah blah during the uragan when there was a high chance for them to die? I m not American, but Im pretty sure there wasn t.
Now lets take zombies. A guy on TV shows reports of zombies and makes it clear that they are a threat. Will people go to wall marts and loot and blah blah blah when they KNOW that there is a chance when they leave their homes that they will die? Not to mention that govs will tell ppl to stay inside. Most homes have a couple of days worth of food, so why go out if you know that you can die? Not saying that there will be not looting, mart ninjas, just saying that it wont be so sheetlike most ppl think.
Only if govs are totally useless and when ppl eat their food then panic will occour, but until then you would be at your BOL anyways:)

  • Zombie panic if you have half life one or two you have the privilege of playing either zombie panic (hl1) or zombie panic: source mod (hl2). I have source and it is highly realistic as well as being entertaining. With a full server it starts out with everyone except for two or three people being zombies. The survivors start out with one pathetic melee weapon and a pistol. As they look for weapons and construct barricades some survivors will get disposed of and become zombies themselves. While in a barricade the survivors will have to kill off all the zombies who can respawn if they have extra lives which all zombies share while also sharing ammo between them. When the ammo thins and the zombies multiply the survivors must think quickly and effectively. If the survivors are smart and cooperate they just might survive. The zombies have some advantages like seeing where humans are in the dark, the chance of infecting humans which can turn and kill their teammates, the ability to regenerate health and of course, increased health. The host website of zombie panic is http://www.zombiepanic.org/site/index.php

  • Anatomy of the Panic Hello there! 182crazyking has stricken again and has made another page -- Anatomy of the Panic, which you may find a link to above this post.

I'm trying to offer a logical breakdown of what is most likely to happen during and after the Panic in a large-scale zombie attack. However, I need help from the community.

If you have a suggestion about something to add or change, please make a post and I'll get back to you.

Thanks for your input in advance.

  • Immune to Panic? If not, Maybe you should examine how you'll make sure you aren't one of the helpless sheepy masses fleeing, looting, and dying. Even well prepared people may decide they just have to go get granny, some item, or other thing that if you slow down and think about is probably not worth fighting the panic for.

My tactic to fight the panic is checklists, I have checklists in my BOB the tick off everything I need, and everyone important to me and my plan. If (and when) the time comes, I'll go down the checklist, see what, or who is missing, then measure the risk vs reward to go after it then. Since I'll already have the basics cared for, it will probably just be a reassuring measure that I'm well cared for, however, if not at least I can quantify the important things, take care of those issues and bug in.

We are all human, so we have to prepare for human weakness, none of us are immune. Now matter how cool, trained, prepared, etc.

How will you fight the panic?

  • Zombie panic Most of you would probabli know about this but if you dont its a heeps fun game. On steam which is a program that lets you run games such as counterstrike and such there is a game called Zombie panic, it is a heeps fun game where there are survivors and zombies. There are maps where it is objective and survival. All in all i probabli would have to say that is my favourite game not just because it has zombies in it :P

  • So, where is the panic? that croatian based markets and supermarkets didnt seem to have that problem at all. Yesterday i went into a supermarket. The only thing that was weird is that i met only 1 man who wasnt employed there.

So, yeah, as i always mentioned, panic does not happen everywhere, and no, shops will not be stripped of all goods if we are supposed to get an inch of snow, as i have been told by some users here in my previous threads.

  • What panic does to people: So I have a story:

I was down at the beach today surfing. There was a rather strong undercurrent running along shore and a little out to sea. After a while (the waves sucked) I put my board on the beach and went to swim and body surf a little. There was a girl (teens to 20s) swimming and apparently she did not notice that she was getting pulled down shore by the current. Eventually she drifted pretty far and began to panic. Although she had been swimming just fine moments ago, she now began to thrash around, totally terrified. I swam over to help her out and she was crying and completely helpless out of fear. She finally calmed down when I took her chin in my hand and made her look at my face and told her it was going to be OK. She (thankfully) calmed down a little and stopped thrashing and yelling but still seemed incapable of swimming so I put my arm around her waist and swam back to where it was shallow enough to walk. After thanking me profusely (I got a thank-you kiss) she tried to explain that she surfs and is familiar with the ocean and what to do when you get in a situation, but totally blanked her mind when she realized she was in trouble.

If something like this can make even people who have experience with something panic and freeze up, think what will happen when shit really hits the fan!

  • The panic or is just opportunity There is alot of discussion about the panic and so on but what i was wondering is how much of it is actually panic buying and not just people making the most of an opportunity to steal goods from stores

my wife works for a large supermarket company so i asked her what her thoughts on the matter were and what she told me amazed me now in her own words

"On Christmas eve the store sold about $500k worth of goods ( just food items thats all they carry ) but the expected losses from theft were around $150k. The store detectives caught and handed over 45 people from 12pm to 8 pm that were just walking out of the store with trolleys full of goods. When things are busy the vultures come out to play "

Now the previous year on Christmas eve without security they lost over $200k worth of goods from people just taking advantage of how packed and busy the store was so they load up their trolley with expensive goods and just walk them out the door and if they get caught they do a runner

So what i wonder now is how much actual panic will there be Vs actual people using the opportunity to steal ( loot) in the event of an actual large scale disaster or zeds

We see alleged articles on people emptying stores from panic buying but how much of that is just people being greedy or stealing and when you see an article about people going nuts over an item on sale can your real base the action of a few people on what the whole population may or may not do.
People that que for hours and climb over others just to get an item are well not the average Joe i mean how many people do you know that have actual done this?

So while we hypothesize over how people will react i want to know how much of it will actually just be human vermin making the most of the situation?

  • No panic... no horde... what now? I would thank God. More time to prepare means more of the totally unprepared can get prepared. A smaller panic, less looting maybe. This means more time for me to think and consider all possible courses of action. I would be more able to organize the unprepared members of my family and friends. I could take more time to mentally prepare myself.

Simply put, take things slower and think out every decision thoroughly.

  • panic cage for children? well I was just thinking about what would happen to kids after the apocalypse and I realized a couple things besides the obvious.

    1. a child, no matter how many times you try to teach them, is still gonna get freaked out at the sign of zombies
    2. while as adults most of us know what to do if our weapons ran out and we had to improvise, but a child could freeze and be blank when in the thought process due to their panic
    3. the first inclination of a child is to hide or run away, but what if there isn't someone to run to? or a good place to hide?

after some thought I realized that a child needs a place to defend themselves if they don't have a gun, a place that they know is secure, and on top of that they have a fighting chance without the need of an adult

imagine this: a cage, or perhaps more likely a pen, that has dimensions of about 20 ydsx20 yds, out in the open of perhaps a field, made of iron or some other strong type of fencing that will resist the strength of MANY zombies

inside the cage is a spear or javelin ready for the child to kill any zombies that are attempting to get in the cage as well as a few days of supplies and ammo

    pros:
    -the child is safe
-they can dispatch zombies at their leisure without harm to themselves
-can wait until an adult comes to their aid

    cons:
-induces a "bait" effect, worst case scenario many zombies could come after them and swarm the cage. while the child could easily continue to kill the zombies, the swarming could induce a negative psychological effect
-supplies could run out (Very SLIM chance considering you could put 3 days rations in there ahead of time)
-worst case scenario there are hundreds of zombies

it seems stupid and smart at the same time so have at it

  • First Hand Panic BLACKOUT Heard about this on the news. That engineer will get a slap on the wrist though.

I, like JPTank, was in the 2003 blackout. I wasn't into prepping and was sweating my balls off. Luckily, I was still doing Loss Prevention at a retail store that had generators (i.e., they were connected to God's greatest gift to man: Air conditioning!). So, obviously, I volunteered for LOTS of badly needed overtime just to stay cool.

Hell, I still remember people breaking windows at Wendy's because they somehow still had power and everyone was demanding food. People panic. It's not a story, it's reality.
