5.56x39 (.223 Remington) pro's and con's.
In the 1940's, German military planners found that their standard K-98 Mauser infantry rifle, (developed in 1898, re-modeled for WWII) did NOT match up to weapons like the American M-1 Garand and M-1 Carbine, with semi-auto firepower and higher ammo capacity. Their study concluded that the average combat engagement range was well under 300 meters, so sights that covered out to 1200 meters were useless. So was a full-sized rifle round like the 7.98 Mauser. Thus was born the SG-43 and SG-44 assault rifles. The rifle fired a 7.98 Kurtz (Short) intermediate cartidge, used a removable 32-round magazine and fired semi and full automatic fire. The Soviets developed the AK-47 to match it and surpassed it by making their rifle much simplier to manufacture and use. The Americans continued to use full-sized battle-rifles until the 1960's, when Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara mandated that the U.S. military would switch to the new Air Force procurred rifle, the M-16. While great for base defenders, it proved to be deficient for jungle warfare, and was quickly modified into the improved M-16A1, which addressed the problems. This remained the military's standard weapon for 20 years. The Military switched to the M-16A2 which incorporated changes to accept the new and improved SS-109 5.56mm round, known in the U.S. Military as the M-855 round, an upgraded, Light Machine Gun version of the original M-16 round, M-193.

The latest military rifle is the M-4 carbine, a shorter version of the M-16.

legality in Massachusetts
i have a few queries:
1.) Is it legal in Massachusetts without any special permits?
2.) If measured on an imprompu scale of reliability, with a vietnam-era M16A1 being one, and a modern, expertly-crafted AK being 100, how would it fare?
3.) What do you believe is the ABSOLUTE MAXIMUM effective range, I.E., how far away are consitently-placed headshot's possible. I don't trust manufacturer's claims.
Note: Please don't reply to this thread, my computer has been acting weird lately and won't read threads sometimes, cuz I run Windows 7, which can be pretty glitchy. Somehow my profile seems exempt from this glitch. Put a new thread on my profile, so that i can actually get it.
Thank you!!!
