Carharts?
What does everyone think about Carharts or other work wear as protective clothing against Zeds? I personally think they would be quite suitable if a little loose fitting.

Zombie resistant door video youtube
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AnslSas5ZOQ
No zombies shown in video, but the door looks like it should be effective. Made in Turkey, they show a cheap security door tested alongside one of their best doors.

Butcher's gloves.
Butchers wear chainmail gloves to prevent slicing their own hands. I think if you get a pair slightly larger than gloves you would usually buy and wear them on top of a pair of leather gloves, it should be quite comfortable and bite resistant.

Finding a Happy Medium: When Groups Collide
Two groups meet;
Group A) Around a platoon and a half of mechanized Infantry guys and some MP's(50 people more or less). Leader is a Captain. They were escorting some relief to an FOB in the city and were over run. They fought their way to the FOB and realized it had been lost. When they asked what to do next, all they heard on the radio was screams, gunshots and the Batallion Executive Officer telling them that the post was lost and that they should not return. They've been on the road for about 2 months and are tired and overworked.
Vehicles: 1 Bradley 3 Up armoured Humvees 1 PLS Fresh (mobile machine shop) 1 LMTV
Armament: 150rds per person of 5.56 for M4s, M16s, SAWs 500rds 7.62 for M240's 475rds of .50 for M2's and M107 12 40mm grenades for M203 100rds of 9mm for M92 400rds 25mm for Bradley 3 TOW missles for Bradley
Group B) About 75-100 people living in a farming community. The aging Leader is the property owner who opened his land to survivors willing to work. Most of the day to day decisions are made by the groups responsible while farming methods and larger decisions are directly overseen by the leader. They have multiple wells, livestock and crops which has made them the target for roving bandits that have used up most of their ammo. They have managed to stockpile some food for the winter. Profitable and self-sustaining would best describe the group.
A tells B that they want a place that they can settle down in. Residents of B have mixed feelings on the matter. A has basically told B that they are not taking no for an answer.
How would you handle the situation? Feel free to play either side.

Suit as weapon?
I was thinking that you could have a lightweight bite and stab/slash proof suit, like one made out of leather or something similar, then add pads with knifes. I was thinking you could have a normal sized knife sticking out above your hand and a longer more sword like sticking out by the elbow, running all along the forearm. You are not in risk of cutting yourself, since you are wearing the stab proof gear, and if a zombie were to get up behind you could "easily" take it out with the "elbow sword". You would reach 360 degrees around your body easily! What do you think? And no, this is not to replace your firearm, it's to replace the mele weapon. Instead of carrying one, you just wear one.

Another thing about the hazmat suit
I've been in one, and it can be very hot in it. They're also pretty heavy, and most people who use them in real hazordous enviroments need to wear oxygen masks and tanks, which adds a good 20 lbs, maybe even more. Unless the virus is airborn and skin born, I'd completely ignore it.

Let's talk clothing.
So, as one may guess, attire will be a key part of SHTF survival. Everything from ballistic armor, to environmental hazards, to camoflauge, this thread is out to help YOU find your perfect ensemble.
Take into consideration many factors when picking your outfit, as you may come accross a niche you need filled that you need filled that it doesn't fill(example: bulletproof helmet doesn't block blood splatter).
Another thing this thread can provide is a place to compare and contrast. Leather vs. nylon, skater helmet vs. bike helmet, midieval vs. modern.
So, let's get start started.

your house/shelter surrounded by zombies..possible advantage?
the premise works like this...if your house/shelter is fully secure ( barricades can not be moved by physical/zombie force) and you have an above ground route of travel....would having zombies surrounding your house/shelter act like a group of attack dogs keeping human raiders at bay?

home made simple armor
if you have nothing else, and are currently not being attacked by zombies, and have the means to sew, then take a jacket and separate the layers. put thin sheets of metal (available at many hardware stores) with spaces so that you can move between the layers and sew the layers together between them. this would give you protection against sharp objects and also bites(you could do this to a high collared jacket and also to layered gloves. with the ability to sew and some old clothes, you could make a pocket or holster for almost anything. In terms of a mask, i have no idea. if you are really desperate, you might try to do this to a ski mask, but it would be very uncomfortable...
and i know that most people wouldn't have this (myself included) but didn't some guy invent armor that can stop a bear? i'm guessing that mobility would be a problem. whats the point of being invincible when you have 15 zombies crawling on top of you, holding you down.

armour
think about this the gloves can go against a grinder than takes steal and makes it it's ***** so if the gloves can take a grinder and still keep kicken and the jacket can too then what makes them not a good choise i mean come on it is breathable to an extent so the peaple can work a long time in it andit can be bought at an less expensive rate say $100 fo jacket and 60 fo pants so it might be a good idea

I just want a count of how many survivors may be in the state of VA
I don't want to go to my desired location with only the company I have in mind. So if you live in VA I would really appreciate knowing there are others who plan to be prepared. Possibly to join in the location I have in mind, as well as criticism on said location or other possibilities. I will not divulge anything specific unless I have people to divulge it to.

Gauntlets
The first time I used guantlets(them being padded karate gauntlets)
they turned out to be effective when attempting to put your arm in the way of a bite. My dog would bite it and think about hw to get around it which was useless. I would practice with it everyday in hot weather to get my arms used to the hot conditons the metal gauntlets would bring me. A typical attack with these babies would be to make simple hard swings, such as the MMA "superman" punch, upper cuts, or can be used to rip the jaw off a zombie.

Consider a shield
Think outside the box, or possibly even behind one! I am wondering people thoughts on shields. A riot shield for example, is meant for holding back hostile person.Obviously a riot shield is not readily available, BUT a shield of other sorts can be purchased online, or even built with very little effort.
It provides excellent protection, and a handgun can still be used. A shield can block a doorway or even a narrow hall.
Thoughts on purchasing, creating, and using a shield.
Tips on creating.

what to wear&use
I'm not sure what to believe on all of these posts because i see one thing good about a helmet on this page and something completely different on another page. But other than that, to use i have a bullet-proof vest my uncle used to wear in the SWAT team, his helmet, some driving gloves, and a pair of hiking boots to wear.
