Fighting knife question
Looking for opinions on fighting knife design.
With the cold weather recently I have been rethinking my choices and looking for something that would penetrate multiple layers of winter clothing.
I am thinking a thick, narrow, straight blade about 9 to 14 inches long. Spear point, small hand guard, synthetic grip material, stainless or high-carbon blade. Aiming for a weight under 1 pound. 14 inch blade is the longest I think I could carry under a suit coat or other coat about the same length.
What does everyone think? Also sheath design.

What will the gangs do?
It's recently come to my attention that a particular set of the Bloods has made their turf just a few miles north of me in Sanford, specifically where one of my closest friends (who I certainly factor into my plans in regards to saving her) lives. One of my friends maintains a grudge against them because they murdered a friend of hers and continue to harass her for being a friend of another boy that they want to kill, and they certainly have few compunctions about mugging and murdering innocent people.
What do you think would be the reaction of a street gang like this in a SHTF event? If I plan on bringing Ashley to a more secure area (who currently plans on purchasing a handgun, but as of now is unarmed outside of common household items), I'd have to move through their territory. Would they take to looting or mugging random people in the chaos? Would they try to defend their territory? Would she be at risk for living in the area?
From what I know about the gang, they're still a small time set; cheap handguns (at least as far as back alley street value goes) and pocket knives. I seriously doubt that they have any training beyond popping off rounds in someone's backyard at best, but my only firearm is a Mosin-Nagant; should any conflict occur with a member of these gangs, I'd have more power in each shot at the cost of a smaller magazine size, slower rate of fire, slower reload, and heavier recoil. I may have to rely on the psychological impact of such a massive rifle.

Looking at the Details of Melee Weapons Effectiveness and Tactics.
After doing some research and talking it over with my Army medic friend, we came to these conclutions concerning melee combat and weapons centered around Zeds.
Blunt force trauma does a majority of it's damage to the Cervical Vertabrae and not the skull. If you don't count the damage to a normal human brain from pressure and such, the only other way to kill from a blunt force injury, is to damage the Brain Stem or a portion of the Cervical Spinal Column, stopping the nerves from relaying information to the rest of the body, neutralizing the threat.
Penetrating skull injuries would have to travel deep enough to hit the BS or CSC. This is hampered by the resistance the bone places on the object during penetration, the hardness of the skull and the flexability of the neck. He recomended something like the claw side of a hammer with speed and acutness being the largest factor.
Injuries sustained from long bladed weapons would have to do the same. Recomended just going for decapitation.
His primary target would be the dorsal side of C3-C5 (mid-neck) with something dense, inflexable and of a small diameter. Lateral attacks would be second as there are less muscles to resist the blow. Blows to the front or uppercuts are third because of the whiplash effect. Lastly, downward strikes as the force needed would have to be much more than the others.
With heavy mass weapons (sledgehammer, etc...) a downward strike to the top of the head would crush the CV and BS by shear transfer of force.
Besides HMW's, most of the attacks would use the added stress of the skull's weight to assist in damaging the CV and BS.
I believe the information presented shines some light on a lot of the "myths of melee" I've heard tossed around.

Always Keep Fighting
Note that I'm still editing most of the ideas "Is he dead?" My mind swarmed with thoughts. Thoughts that scared me. I don't know how, but I was lying on the ground, unable to get up. My arm was pinned, and I felt a sharp pain, sort of like a bit

Zombie fighting
Suppose you're in a community of survivors. You're low on forms of entertainment. What can you do? build a big cage for fighting zombies against one another. People could bet on which zombie looks hardest. THAT's entertainment (in the words of Paul Weller).
Any thoughts? Or do you think that zombies wouldnt fight each other, as is the sterotype? I havn't heard an explanation for this before but one occured to me a couple of weeks ago, which is that they might want fresh flesh, in which case new-born zombies would be edible zombie chow.

game plan
what is your starting plan for getting away from the first swarm to getting to a safe house and everything inbetween.
I personally am going to run into my parents room with a large duffle bag, grab as many guns and bullets and knifes as possible call my friend fisher and tell him to get ready as i am fighting through to get my dog regan then load everything into my accura and drive over to get my friend then we will prolly set up base in a walmart or something after getting a few more comrades to help fight off the zombies.
so! wats your plan?

Anti-zombie vehicles, issues and possible solutions.
The big problem will always be the finite amount of resources available post-Z apoc. You will run out of gas and bullets, food, medicine, water, people, hope.
Granted you were able to make a stand and put together some mechanically inclined folks that could build a truck similar to the one in Land of the Dead, the Dead Reckoning, it is still going to run into the problem of finite resources. You can only have so much space for fuel, food and other essentials not to mention the crew.
Ok, so you build your ultimate anti-zombie truck. Not one Z can get it, it lumbers at top speeds of 30 possibly 40 miles per hour. You bring extra fuel and load it inside, you're loaded for bear with all manner of ammo and guns and cleaning/repairing equipment. You go to the outskirts of a city and then boom, you kill your first Z. A few start to pour in then a few hundred then a few thousand. The next thing you know you're wading up to your eyeballs in Zack and you've run out of ammo, what then?
You're armored, you're protected, they can't possibly topple your rig and they can't get in. Are you now fated to suffer the doom of the sardine in the tin can (ooops who brought the can opener? No one?). Would it be possible to mount some sort of external weapon that you can use to knock Zack heads while controlling the weapon from inside? Or have slits on the sides where you can employ a very long, weighted pole with a wicked blade on the end that you can lift up and let the weight crash down on Zack's head? Or possibly your rig is so high up that you can open up a hatch and start knocking heads from the top of your truck (ensuring of course that they don't have the chance to ramp up over each other). How long would it take do you think? Would you be up to such monotonous and no doubt tiresome work to rid a city or small area of thousands, possibly millions of Zack? Will 50 of these work vs 1M Z? Thoughts?

Solider
Okay, for those who think anyone can be a solider, think about this:
Only 3% of frontline soliders in world war 2 actually shot to kill. The rest purposefully missed the target. This means that in world war z, not everyone will be cut out to engage zees and kill them. If they won't kill or injure while shooting, they can't be a solider and they are just wasting the group's resources.
