New 'Heartland' Virus Discovered in Sick Missouri Farmers
Two men in Missouri who became severely ill after sustaining tick bites were found to be infected with a new type of virus, according to a study from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Both men were admitted to hospitals after experiencing high fevers, fatigue, diarrhea and loss of appetite. They were originally thought to be suffering from a bacterial infection, but doubts arose when they didn't improve after being treated with antibiotics.
Further tests revealed their blood contained a new virus, which the researchers dubbed the Heartland virus. It belongs to a group called phleboviruses, which are carried by flies, mosquitoes or ticks, and can cause disease in humans.
While the genetic material of Heartland virus appears similar to that of other phleboviruses, the particular proteins it produces are different enough to call it a new species, said study researcher Laura McMullan, a senior scientist at the CDC.

Personal Adaptions of Religious Traditions Post Apoc
I'm curious about what PERSONAL adaptions people on the wiki are considering making for their religious practices postApoc. I've been thinking about the topic lately and realizing that I will need to adapt to conditions where I can't just sit down in the forest and meditate - unless I aspire to be zombie chow!
As a practicing volva, I do a fair amount of what, for lack of a better term, is called shamanic journeying. This entails deep meditation which means I will not be alert. Normally, I can do this just about anywhere, preferably by myself; post Apoc, I will need to get others to guard me while I am journeying. That is going to be weird! I will need to develop a different relationship with the group I'm in.
May have to swap out guard time and/ or spend more time journeying for group members. Other practices are less affected, rituals can be done within walls or even indoors. Tho, outside is best under the stars. Fortunately, the rites don't require special props or costumes.
Will the advent of the ZomPoc have an impact on YOUR religious traditional practices? Remember, these are YOUR adaptions, not somebody else's. The mods will be watching!

How many of you have heard of a slingshot bow before? Well I have and I thought it would be excellent to have as a primary weapon. It is really quiet and you can make the ammo (I.E.) the arrow easily, and don't forget you need to be very quiet and this will help you. Comments, concerns, or question please share. P.S. If i forgot anything please add on.

Flesh-Eatting Super Bugs!
OK this is a strange one, but I watched an episode of CSI in which assassins used flesh eating beetles to dispose quickly of bodies and any evidence soft tissue leaves behind. These bugs were able to do this rather quickly as well something along the lines of less than a day. The beetles were bio engineering to have a heightened metabolism leading them to do what they do naturally ((consume dead flesh)), at a stunning pace.
It made me curious as to the feasibility of such veracious insects and their implications on possible military strategies for getting rid of zombies.
Willows in the Wind was title of the CSI epsiode in which these beetles were used.

Off Road Wheeled Luggage
For me at least I have found that a good set of wheeled luggage helps when on travel and carrying lots of heavy things over long distances. ((thanks to being a preparatory nut I carry alot of heavy things in my luggage...)) Anyways the question that popped into my mind was do they make larger bike type wheel luggage for use in the many unpaved surfaces of the world.
Oddly enough they really don't... It seems so simple a concept to mount a couple of children's 12" bike wheels on either side a stiff framed set of luggage but it has yet to be done.
Here is the Only decent example I could find and it was a DIY project a guy made out of necessity.

"'Tis the Season" to benefit humans
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Ok with that out of the way...
Thought it would be fun to discuss in a little more detail the advantages and disadvantage of the seasons on a zombie apocalypse. Feel free to contribute where you are and describe your seasons. Then discuss how this benefits or places humans at a disadvantage.

Simple. You are at home, sleeping, and the zeds invade. You have one minute to react. You have roll down shutters for all doors and windows, but they are up. You have a glock with 3 33 round mags, an AR-15 with seven 30 round mags, and a mossberg 590 with fifty shells. You have six months of food and water. Your car was stolen. There are fifty zeds, and many more to come. Now that you have all of this information, what would you do?

ZSDW Minecraft Multiplayer Sign Up Thread!
UPDATE: http://www.zombiesurvivalwiki.com/page/ZSDW+Minecraft+Server PAGE IS NOW UP!
As I am sure many of you are aware of, the ZSDW has had an active Minecraft community for a few months now. Many users, including staffers here enjoy the survival genre it offers.
After much difficulty I have managed to resolve many problems blocking our way and finally we can get a dedicated server for the ZSDW.
This would mean that ZSDW users could go hunting together in huge forests and return with meat to trade at a ZSDW outpost.
It would mean ZSDW users would be able to build houses, shops, farms and massive barricades. Then frantically try to survive the waves of zombies and creepers assaulting the fortress.
It would mean ZSDW users working in teams to explore massive cave systems to grab vital materials like iron and coal to fashion weapons to help the ZSDW base survive.
If you are interested in playing Minecraft with your fellow ZSDW members place your name in this thread or send a private PM to Marsden.
We can expect the server to be online for ZSDW member use by the 28th Janurary approximately.
Information regarding Minecraft can be found here: http://www.minecraft.net/

GPS a good thing or not?
I was reading the Build the BOB from the ground up article and I have reservations about the GPS information(nothing against the person who wrote it just my $ .02). I understand the advantages of a hand held GPS unit they are great, but remember they are only a machine they have limitations. For example I live next to a large National Forest and about two or three times a year I find people in the woods who have no right to be in the woods without a helmet. Recently I have been finding jackholes who are Geocaching(which in theory is a great thing to get people off their bums and doing things) but go into the woods with no supplies or skills other than an AA powered device. Two people have run out of battries, one busted, and one left it sitting on a rock and wandered away. Learning how to read a map is a skill you should have before you go into the woods, having and useing basic equipment also. Sorry for the rant but I dont want to have to help the local Rangers pull some dumb fool out of my back yard because he watched Les Stroud or some other show.
Am I wrong in my assesment of the GPS unit? Am I basing my opinion on a limited number of mouth breathers? What do you all think?

Practical use for the BOB
The wife and I were driving to visit our son the other day, hit a patch of ice and landed her car in a field. It being a freakin front wheel drive Honda(not my Jeep) it was going nowhere. Fortunatly I had my handy dandy survival pack.
I used the E tool to dig out the tail pipe and make sure we could start it every hour to get heat. I left her some extra cloths and food to keep warm. packed up what I needed and walked to the nearest place to use a phone(no cell reception of course). I had extra gloves, scarves, and a cover.
Always keep a BOB on you even if it is not the end of the world, it can get your but out of a jam.

Help Wanted: Fellow Writers and Up
So, I'm thinking of starting a disscussion on (yes, I know it might sound a bit mall ninja, but wait to see what I have to say before laughing) zombie fighting tactics. For groups, solo, weapons usage, traps, posbbily even good defensive formations for a horde charging at you.
A couple threads and then a page for "living ragers," "undead shamblers," and 'undead runners' should work, I think. If any of you would like to help me with the pages it would be much appreciated, as I will be putting a good deal of my limited time on here working on the Mexico Survival Guide.
Ps. Anyone interested in helping with the Mexico Survival Guide, let me know about that, too.
What are your thoughts on the topic.
why, why not

ZSDW Rap Battle Competition!!
As I am sure many of you are aware there is a series on YouTube called Epic Rap Battles of History.
Here are a couple of examples:
The rap uses its lyrics to represent fights between personal conflicts, opinions and stances on issues.
Now, I thought we could bring it onto here!
A sort of, more relaxed thread which you can kick back and enjoy!
I thought we could arrane rap battles for a humourous way to resolve some arguments on here between people.
AK47 vs M16
Melee vs Long range weaponry
Those are only off the top of my head.
But yes, feel free to challenge someone, start up your own thread and make sure "RAP BATTLE" is the first part of the title.
We can use this thread to discuss the best ways to arrange rap battles and sort out rules for who wins.
So, go ahead, throw your ideas in here for the best way to get our rap battle project up and running!

Southern England plans
Hello, first post, i apologise for errors etc. This post is basically a call out to anyone in South England area who is open to discussing plans, survival tactics and other points open to discussion. I have searched the site and haven't really found anything of worth on this subject so thought it might be a good idea.
