Descisions, descisions....
You asked where you would draw the line between going home and going somewhere else; this would all depend on location and situation. If, say, you're closer to your family than to your house, and you know they have such and such supplies, it may be better to go straight there and improvise - your greatest weapon when low on gear.
As for going for family, I would side with you. I have people very close to me, more than 600 miles away. If the Zeds break out, I dont give a good Goddamn. Im going to set up my imediate family, make sure they and other survivors can get by, and then Im off. I know the chances I will make it are slim... but its worth it...
And to answer your last question, you should be prepared for the end of the world. It may last only a week. It may last a month. But what if it doesnt end. Would you rather be prepared for the worst only to have it last a few days; or be able to live a week very comfortably before you run out of food?
So I hope whatever descisions you make, they suit you. Goodluck with survivng the undead apocalypse.
