Guns are useless
By saying this, I may very well burst the bubble, and shatter the daydream held by 90% of those who view this thread. GUNS ARE USELESS. they are loud and therefore attract attention. Even the best silencers cannot hide their sound nearly enough. They run out of ammo. And even if you stock up, it is the end of the world. there will be no more ammo produced. It will be a dwindling resource. And a useless one.
What you WILL need is a large, sharp piece of steel (Sword) or a bat. some sort of melee weapon, complimented by a silent ranged weapon (Bow, high power sling shot). Where as it does not make loud noise to attract attention, and has infinite ammo. create it yourself. So let go of your gun slinging fantasy and accept the truth. Let the butt-hurt commence!

So, where is the panic?
As you probably know, Europe has been hit with severe winter, by our standards anyway.
Here are some pics. http://www.google.hr/imgres?q=snijeg+u+bih&hl=hr&gbv=2&biw=1280&bih=920&tbm=isch&tbnid=IqYbS-e486ws-M:&imgrefurl=http://blog.meteo-info.hr/kategorija/aktualnosti/page/2/&docid=lYYvSrSpcDV_UM&imgurl=http://blog.meteo-info.hr/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/sarajevo.jpg&w=632&h=421&ei=tkc2T9-9A8THswaO3JSaDA&zoom=1&iact=rc&dur=208&sig=105968654335761061985&page=3&tbnh=163&tbnw=251&start=38&ndsp=21&ved=1t:429,r:18,s:38&tx=145&ty=139
Those snow dunes are cars btw. They got 1.5 metres of snow.
Here is a funny pic of a city which gets snow every 50 years or so http://www.google.hr/imgres?q=meanwhile+in+split&um=1&hl=hr&gbv=2&biw=1280&bih=920&tbm=isch&tbnid=PgPk1ulVnFGu0M:&imgrefurl=http://karmadecay.com/r/pics/comments/p96p4/meanwhile_in_split_croatia/&docid=K-ZjPwQVwdqMFM&imgurl=http://i.imgur.com/KKJO5.jpg&w=625&h=400&ei=UEg2T8qhNM3ItAa7xLn6Aw&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=635&vpy=163&dur=4895&hovh=180&hovw=281&tx=143&ty=53&sig=105968654335761061985&page=1&tbnh=147&tbnw=196&start=0&ndsp=31&ved=1t:429,r:4,s:0 (about 30 cm, 500 injured and counting)
And there is my home area, Istria, Croatia which didn't get any snow until today. But heavy winds caused roads to close which meant supermarkets didn't resupply for almost a week. Can you guess what happened? All of them empty, people on a buying frenzy, fighting other people for food? No, in fact, in those german supermarkets like lidl and kaufland they were half empty, with a week without resupply. And those things that were missing are perishables. Non perishables are still largely there. Not to say contd...

Essential Equipment for Vehicles
We already have a thread regarding the selection of a suitable vehicle for those of us who don't like the idea of trying to make it where we are.
This thread is for discussing what kinds of things you want INSIDE your car (or perhaps bolted to the outside) that will help you survive.
Here are a few I can think of quickly:
- Jerry cans and carrier. Extra gas is always good - Fullsize spare tire, jack, lug wrench - Mini air compressor. A small leak doesn't mean you have to swap in your spare if you have a compressor to fill up when it gets low. Also good for varying your tire pressures (down for dirt, up for pavement). - All tools common to your vehicle (or at least a pair of screwdrivers, pliers, some wrenches, and a socket set) - DUCT TAPE. - MORE DUCT TAPE. (preferably second roll is camo color) - protein bars and water pouches. they'll keep forever. - rope

PaintingFence's incomplete survival plan.
Firstly, when I heard that Zombies had risen, I would get myself up stairs. I live alone so I would not have to cater for family also. I would make sure ALL my supplies and rations were also up here and other sensible items. I would also take a ladder. I'd then knock down my stairs, after boarding up and securing all entrance points obviously.
I would fill the bath and sink with water, before either supply is cut off or the water becomes infected. This would be drinking water for a few days, before it goes stale. My home supplies include two weeks worth of canned food, water fuel and other essential items. I would attempt to contact my 'Zombie survival team' on a radio stream that is always on.
Living in the UK, it is much harder to obtain firearms but I am lucky enough to own a semi-automatic AR15, and various shot guns. I also have ownership of a Remington 700. After approximately 10 days, when all the crazy people causing havoc on the streets have died off, I would meet the rest of my team at a secret rally point. Secrecy is another part of the survival plan, we can not have n00bs interrupting and obstructing us.
As we live in the suburbs, we would have to get to safety. We are all very skilled at certain things, as this will make everything much easier. For instance, we have someone in the team who is very good with cooking in the outdoors, and identifying poisonous plants and such. One member of the team is fantastic with electronics, mechanics and engineering. He also set up the radio system for the team. All the team are in great physical shape.
We're all perfectly well armed, so to say, as we all have a weapon that can be fired - but nothing stupid - and a more trusted melee weapon (ranging from steam treated katanas to machetes to hatchets). We would make our way to an undecided location, to dig in on a more permanent basis.
This is unfinished, let me know what I missed out!

Wood Gas possible solution for fuel problems?
Guys i was just discussing with one of my friends about the collapse of civilization when we started wondering how we would be able to keep our vehicles running. Because we both knew that diesel and gasoline eventually run out or spoil so we needed to find an alternative. So we thought about a lot of different alternatives when i remembered about that one show ''the Colony'' and how they made that wood gas generator and used the stuff to power that car they had. So I was just wondering if we could use that to power our vehicles so we wouldn't have to be kicked back into the stone age and be forced to use horses and stuff. Just wanted some of your guys opinions on this and whether or not it could be a solution to the common problem of fuel loss in post apocalyptic settlements.

Lighting Post Z-Day
When in africa in order to keep ourselves safe from animals and to provide lighting we used candles, however an open candle flame will blow out quickly. if you lack metal lamp holders then the best way is to cut the top of a plastic drinks bottle and put the candle in it.

Gear Deals.
Hey guys. It occured to me that there are often times when members find a good deal on a certain piece of gear. Well, instead of making a thread on each one, just make one thread where we post all of them. I don't know if this will work, but it's worth a try.
I'll start it off: CDNN sports is selling S&W 5906 9mms for $299. Smiths have good reputations, so this sounds pretty good to me.

Mailboxes!!
I was thinking if there was a z -poc wouldnt the mail stop. So you have a key and a locked box away from your house what a perfet place to hide a gun extra ammo and supplies.
Lets say zombies invade your house so fast you can't grab a weapon you get to your mailbx with the key hidden nearby then all the sudden your armed again. You can also hide some survival suplies and maybe a small bag incase it is too dangerous to take bak your house.

Pricing for UK on a budget.
This is designed to help with pricing considerations with a rough guide to how much i think each single person will need over a 6 month period in order to defend his/her home and eat, drink and stay clean.
Sorry for the messy format, it was coppied from a table. I can still make sense of it though, i hope you can!
Basic essentials Price. Recommended amount per person for 6 months and price.
Sand bags x100 £35 N/A, depends on defensive position. Cheap rifle x 2 £100 1, £40+ Ammo (500 Rim Fire) £25 200, £10 OR 100 centre fire £20-£60 200, £40-£120 Wate Free OR 100 Ltr mineral = £28 300+Ltr £60-£90 Rice, 5Kg £5 25KG, £25! Misc Flavouring x1 jar/bottle £1 20, £20 Multi-vits x500 £5 180, £18 Bulk basic toiletries varies £20 F.Aid kit/meds £5-£20 £10 Total £240
Other Veg seeds £1 a packet Bulk, £30 Top soilw/fertilizer £5 big packet 10, £50 Most canned foods £0.40-£2 each 200-500 would feed one person for 5 months depending on contents. Gas camping stove £10 1 + 1 backup. Stove refills (2-4 hours cooking) £2.50 The more the merrier, but wood can be used to cook. Camping cooking set £5 1 per 5 people Petrol £5/gallon Depends on vehicles, generators and budget. Handcuffs £3-10 Depends on budget. Gerber Gator machete £30 Ideally, 1 per person for defence.
So what do you think? I'd add comments for each but it would take up pages.

A complete survival shelter?
In my short time on this website, and looking on youtube, I am yet to find a fool-proof survival shelter.
There are many people who are very well prepared with supplies and weapons etc, but i am yet to come across photographs, videos or even a description of the ULTIMATE survival shelter.
Im talking underground shelter, with food, water, weapons, med kits, gold/silver bullion n all that shniz.
There are a few videos on youtube of peoples personal underground shelters (excluding basments) but none of them are shown to be kitted out with all the neccessities. We all (I hope) know that nuclear war is probably much more likely than WWZ, and I think an underground shelter/bunker is preferable to a home you could defend.
If i was loaded, i'd build an underground bunker. I understand they cost a substantial amount of money (depending on how its built, obviously) so not many people can afford one.
I'd apreciate if any of you could direct me to somewhere where there's either a picture, video or even description of such a place. Thanks.

Items you'd forget to stock up on.
Hello, guys. Pre-SHTF, we all know to stock up on things like food, water, ammo, batteries, etc.
However, what are some other things worth stocking up on that some people forget about?
Things like: zip-ties plastic bags clothes how-to books gun-cleaning materials tools for repairing cars. Seeds. PVC pipe.
