Tracking discussion thread.
Does anyone here do much tracking? Either for hunting, or for fun.
I thought a thread discussing techniques, traditions, and different ideas for different prey would be a fun topic.
On a side note: I'm thinking of starting a really basic "How to" series for tracking. Just really simple and easy stuff I've picked up over the years I think people would really appreciate. I'm waiting until I get a better video camera to record them so my audience can keep up with the little details that make the difference in tracking.
I'll share some of my techniques and methods tomorrow. It's too late for me to write that all out tonight.

Cattails
It is that time of year. the tails are ripening and the pollen is bursting!
The female part, while it is green is edible. The male part, before it is fluffy with pollen is edible. Boil like you would for corn on the cob. Some references say to eat it like corn on the cob too. Personally shave it off the stem and eat it like cut corn. The female part tastes faintly like corn. The male part, well I can not say that it tastes like anything in particular, but I can say that it tastes very good.

Enough with the 2nd, how about the 4th Amendment
The 4th amendment guards US citizens again unlawful search and seizure:
"The Fourth Amendment has been held to mean that generally a warrant must be judicially sanctioned for a search or an arrest. In order for such a warrant to be considered reasonable, it must be supported by probable cause and be limited in scope according to specific information supplied by a person (usually a law enforcement officer) who has sworn by it and is therefore accountable to the issuing court." --Wikipedia
In certain homes with EPA certified wood burning appliances, one may have ignorantly given right to the EPA to randomly enter your home and levy fines for improper installation of an appliance. These fines can exceed $10,000. Rebates that were applied in good faith may be rescinded, leaving a homeowner deeply in debt.
Those at risk are homes that may be built to "Green" standards and LEED standards. Others may be at risk also. I only became aware of this issue at recent training, so I am unsure of how dire and to what extent the risk is.
How would the EPA know? When you, or your installer, register the product (necessary for warranty coverage) the manufacturer is required to report the purchase to the EPA. One may be registered without knowing it has been done. There is no provision for a home owner to "opt out".
I am unsure if this may be carried on to homes that are not receiving benefit of rebates for LEED certification, but it bears keeping an eye on.

reccomended survival vehicle
i have put some thought into this topic and here is the conclusion ive come to
the best vehicle in my opinion for surviving the coming apocalypse is any pre 1980 fullsize 4x4 pickup. these trucks are rugged durable easily repaired and when powered by a small block or I6 engine (302 351 400, 300I6) get better fuel mileage than you might think. often times these trucks can be obtained cheaply (chevy blazers and pickups although not my first choice seem to be the easiest to find). many of these trucks also have a very large fuel capacity, my 1978 ford powered by a 400cid small block v8 have from factory 2 38 gallon tanks and as long as I keep my speed at a reasonable level for the trucks set up (it was originally built as a bush truck not a highway truck so it dosent like to go much more than 45mph) will travel almost 750 miles.
so forget Humvees m35's and aurmored cars buy yourself a farm truck today

Is this man a tyrant?
To all who will post this will be a group scenario of sorts with you being apart of a small survival colony and all participants being apart of the community council. You are the governing body of the community and for the most part are tasked with making the settlement overall run smoothly. The grand jist of this is to basically for all of you to work together and decide on how to solve the issues at hand. Summer vacation i coming and this will, if I find this one turns out well, be a series of scenarios. Now the story:
It has been many years since "The Days of Fire swept across the land leaving it scarred and ravaged virtually beyond repair. But as history has shown humans are survivors and we eventually adapt to the situation and go on. The community you live in is in a rather large valley enclosed by mountains which seem to touch the clouds and protect you from the outside. The land though not great has always provided for your people as long as you have been here and you are grateful for that. You have not only survived but you have thrived and your village now currently hosts roughly 800 people(men, women, children, elders). You are not alone, this valley has become a haven in the PSTF world and consequently you share it with many neighboring villages, some nice others not so much.
In the beginning things were rather peaceful but soon things turned sour; Coveting the safety and the resources of the valley invasions spurred by Nomadic peoples, Brigands, Raiders, Warrior Cultures and such came upon the land like a plague. Famine spread, trade stagnated, Blood shed was so common that mothers would still smile if their children were quartered in front of their eyes for they were used to it all by now and as such did not phase them. One could describe it like a dark tunnel but their was no light at the end, just more darkness. But things have a rather peculiar way of occurring whether it be by fate or luck one really knows. ~Cont~

I need help making new survival plans
A few years ago I had a solid survival plan. since then, i have married, fathered 2 children and moved across the country from a VERY rural area to an urban area. Charleston SC. The urban environment is still a foreign place to me and I dont have many contacts here.
so far, my plan revolves around moving back to my home town where I am very familiar with the environment.... bugging in and bugging out as necessary. but there are too many unknowns. the trip (by car) is a 12 hour ride and I will have to take my family through 5 dense urban areas. Columbia SC, Spartanburg SC, Knoxville TN, Nashville TN, and Paducah KY. I have checked alternate routes on google maps and I avoid Columbia and Spartanburg but have to pass through Atlanta GA and Chattanooga TN.
We are sure to die if we stay put, but the journey is too great and is just as likely to kill us.

School Shooting Plan
LJ recently put a video about "Run, Hide, Fight" where the shooter goes into an office, and people plan for themselves.
So, I am not in a work place, I'm in a school. Now, I'll first explain the plan the school has put in place, and then say my opinion on it.
Plan is: Everyone says in their classes, and the teachers have black plastic bags that they tape in front of the door's window. Then, the strongest of the class move, for example, a heavy desk in front of the door. Then, after shutting the lights off, everyone silences their cellphones and does not call nor text message (which will most probably be a broken rule). There's a code to say that it's ended too.
Now, my issues with this:
-No escape route
-Unprepped persons could **** that **** up, I could name the people who will **** everything up. I'd knock them out first, but it's against the rules.
-There is no plan for if the shooter breaks into the class. The teacher replied to me "just close your eyes and hope for the best" (and I was like "I'd fight to death you scumbag")
-The plan is imposed, there's no "free-will", and you can't do what you want to save your life (even though I don't know of anyone in my classes who could block me, not bragging but I'm quite in shape, and I've had martial arts training)
And, as an added anti-bonus, they ask us to "all pile in the corner" which from the door's window the shooter couldn't see. OK, that's actually brilliant, but... we are trapped in a corner, when a shooter is there? Imagine the sh*tf*ck that ensues if he starts shooting in there... I think I'll get myself a classmate to take the bullets while I fake dead underneath, at least I think it's your only chance.
So, I exposed all of the plan, what do you guys think about it?

My survival plan
My original plan was to bug in, but then I read a page/thread about high-security prisons. Basically, my new plan is to collect a bunch of people and their supplies and high-tail it to the nearest high-security prison. Also, I am saving up to renovate my house so that it takes advanced motor skills to get in and out. I live within walking distance of a farm, hot spring, and a huge range of other places that have useful items, so raiding/ collecting extra supplies shouldn`t be a problem. (As you can see if you have an IQ of over 40, this plan only really works for toxic sludge/ pathogen/parasite zombies.) Please give me your feedback.

My plans for a base and refugee camp
My plan is to make a field into my first base (it's fenced in and i know it well) and take in some refugees. will be scavenging with a group of 2-10+ by any means available. i am near a medium sized town to resupply and look for survives
1) food is easily available so is clean water 2) i have enough weapons to supply my team and can make weapons for others 3) the soil is good enough to grow some crops will admit the heading south was VERY stupid (it was just a last minute add in really) and i apologize for that. now about the field, it has a 10 ft. fence (i think may be a little less) the ground is very fertile and currently just has wild grass and small trees on it. there is a large pile of ground up black-top that lets you see all the way to the single gate on a back road. the field itself is like a quarter of a mile long and a little less wide. as for food that can come from private homes and town for a while but the town is a little more then 10 miles away with a few houses between
hope this update cleared things up some

My zombie survival plan
I think I will take only one of my friend with me, because two people won't need too much of supplies, and also can depend on each other. I will bring my cycling backpack, it can fit many cans and water bottle. Before go out to find supplies, I will take a axe and a flashlight from home. And also bring a couple cans of food, and some water. Then, I drive a car to the near convenience store, if I track some zombies but that ok, cause I can use my axe to kill them. I will stay there for a few days , block the doors and widows with wooden plans.

The Wiskey thread
"The whiskey shop" the best idea the government of Ontario has ever come up with is in full swing. I've been sampling assorted whiskeys from around the world! and it’s put me in a mood to talk whiskey! This thread is dedicated to that nectar of the gods Whiskey! be it whiskey stories, favorite whiskey brands, what to avoid or simply its general goodness ;)
I know it's not zombies but at least it isn't politics!

Rocket Mass Heater
As you may know I am a chimney mechanic. I have been loosely following the development of Rocket Mass Heaters. These appliances are not yet supported by the NFPA 211 (chimney code) nor the IRC, but have great promise. The cost of getting a standard written and then testing is huge and drawn out though time. I perceive these as becoming very popular as local authorities begin to accept them.
The source page has a description of them, but in short:
Based on rocket stove technology, a rocket mass heater performs by using 1/3 of the wood used in conventional wood stoves, extracting more heat over a longer period of time, and producing 1/000 of the emissions as particulates.
I really want to build one of these and do some testing. I just don't have funding or a place to do it.
Here is a link to a set of DVD's that the pioneers of Rocket Mass Heaters have produced. If nothing else, get the set for the Fire Science disk. I haven't gotten it yet, however, these folks are down to earth with a keen eye to progress through science.

Scenario
Well it seems we've gotten off the spirit of this site we've forgotten zombies and the end of the world as we know it! Politics and guns can be tiring if endlessly discussed and are a spawning ground for misunderstanding and resentment. Carnack hasn't posted a scenario in a while (what a lazy butt eh? jk) so I thought I’d whip up this little one of dubious quality.
The hoard has receded and the world has begun to stabilize. The cost in life was staggering fewer than 20 million people survived on earth. The war lasted 15 years, most military supplies were exhausted. The cities lie in ruin. Fractured small settlements dot the landscape; big cities are a thing of the past. Agriculture has commenced and we are starting to rebuild what was lost. You are the leader of one of the larger settlements in your region you have 120 able bodied people. How will you rebuild? What will you build? What industry and trade if any will you have? How will you deal with potential shortfalls, disease and security? How will you acquire resources?

New Governments
When the infection happens people will form their own governments by taking over well fortified areas. What I would do if it happens, i would secure the place with most supplies like a Wall-mart or country market and secure all the entrances so they wont get in and i would start making weapons out of car parts of pipes and hand them out to everyone i trust with a weapon we would not be a government yet but if we stay there long enough we might turn into one. who agrees.
