How a zombie could come arise
Dec 5 2007, 9:41 PM EST | Post edited: Dec 5 2007, 9:41 PM EST
There are many possibilities to how the zombie virus could arise. The most common is that it would arise from a virus such as ebola or rabies, though of the two rabies would be the more likely due to its effect on behavior. Another possibility is it could arise from a artificial retrovirus, which would change the actual dna of the individuals genome of a person, and could cause certain brain functions and other processes to shut down or change rendering the victim in a zombie state. 16  out of 18 found this valuable. it would be more plausable for it to be a retrovirus because they can code DNA, unlike Rhabdoviruses (rabies), by utilizing an enzyme called reverse transcriptase. Thats why it's so hard right now to cure HIV. More or less, Im agreeing with you.
However, Im not dismissing your theory because who knows, maybe evolution could change that.

Toxoplasma gondii. Take a look at that little bug. If that was the focus of some experimentation, that could produce some scary possibilities. 3  out of 3 found this valuable. Do you?

There could also be the possibility of the disease arising from some form of prion like the ones that cause Kuru and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. Both of those attack parts of the nervous system as well as other parts of the body, and since little is understood of how prions transmit themselves and the fact that prions are little more than infectious proteins could make it somewhat simple for someone to code a cell or bacterium to produce it and possibly code it into a zombie causing disease. 2  out of 3 found this valuable. If the military tried to make a virus to make their soldiers more resistant to combat stress they might try to increas aggressiveness. If something went wrong or they made it too strong this could mean that they have some thought processes but would go into a killing spree with no remourse or discrimination. They would also make it extreamly contagius. So Forget Being bitten it could easily be made airborn and/or waterborn. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

How many homeless people in the world are there?. Drop a contaminated substance in the middle of a large group of them and wait. Field studies on this would be vitally important. Do you find this valuable?

More than likely, the virus would have to be engineered as a biological weapon. It wouldn't shock me if somebody tried to manufacture one. A virus that forces its host to devote every instinct, every ability, and every moment of its existence to infect other victims could be a strategic weapon potentially more effective than an atomic bomb. Even more so, because the opposing force's equipment and supplies would be left relatively unharmed. This could also provide an explanation as to why "zombie sightings" (if they exist) are covered up.

I agree OunknownO that the chance of this happening is pretty low, but still, with all the various viruses and parasites, increasing human agressiveness isnt that hard. Some of the definitions (i.e. Their smell is increased to super human, only die by headshots, their whole genetic code and brain waves are changed in an instant to a agressive, human eating zombie, ) are a little far-fetched, though I wouldnt be surprised if they were possible.
Also, its already been stated in this article, but Toxoplasma gondii can control rats, and humans are very similar to rats.

Genetically, we are about 99% similar to rats.

has anyone read the book "cell" by Steven king? In it human thoughts are erased by radio waves. Anyway the survivors talk about a theory that if you get rid of every thing in the human brain, i mean every thing. thoughts, instinct, everything. The only thing that can't be erased is the instinct to kill. so maybe zombies might be blank minded humans Do you find this valuable?
