I don't think a military base would be the ideal place to go.

I must disagree with you on the military base matter. Firstly;
You said, "there would be access to weapons and ammo."
Trained soldiers would a)Probably not let civilians have the guns and b) if they happened to have retreated from the base trained soldiers probably wouldn't leave their guns behind.
Secondly;
You stated, "May have trained soldiers there."
What happens to you if the soldiers have bee given an order to shoot everything on sight eg. 28 weeks later, or if the soldiers have malicious intent 28 days later.
Thridly;
You stated, "Machine Gun emplacements can mow down large groups of zombies if your a good enough shot."
Need I remind you that you need to hit the brain to kill them. A machine gun doesn't have much accuracy control. I admit that you did say, "if your a good enough shot." But 99% of people couldn't fire 100 bullets into a horde and even score 20 head shots.
On a lighter note you made some good points relating to the infected soldiers wearing kelvar helmets.

It's not really a good place. I live on one. I work for them. Stay the hell away man. One reason is that many, many people have the very same idea that you do. More than likely we wouldn't be turning people away, we would be accepting them. That is why we would fail. It would get in. On some one not dead, then they die and you know it's just a chain reaction. Secondly, Marsden it correct, if I have to evac I'm taking everything I can get my hands on and throwing it in something else large that isn't mine and driving away... I know when it all goes up the creek many of my comrades feel the same way. So there wouldn't be much there for you to scrounge. Bunkers? Yeah they'd be locked down the minute that a zombie farted. Used to work in one of those too... Just don't do it man. Go away from the zombies not to them.

One point on machine guns. They would be useful in knocking the zombies into more manageable sized chunks to be cleaned up later. The M240 and the M2 can take limbs off. The Mk.19 is an automatic grenade launcher that would do the same, just better. Head shots happen more than you think with the M249. Controled bursts work quite nice.

I stand corrected. I didn't know it would take limbs off. That would be helpful. They can't get you if they have no arms or legs. 5  out of 5 found this valuable. Do you?

That is why I said they would be made into more manageably sized pieces. Not harmless but we would be able to clean up a little easier. Maybe make burning them worth it, if they are all outside of the perimeter that is. Still I feel that is just prolonging the inevitable. Maybe it would buy enough time to get the civilians evacuated. Then it would be worth it... 4  out of 4 found this valuable. Do you?

I think the base might work (I also live on one) but it would take years for everyone to either die off and the zombies to move on or for everything to cool down and the military to get a firm base sit up. Do you find this valuable?

I would say stay away from a military base at all costs for about a year before even atempting to capture and fortifie it mainly like what was stated by (springatron) that there will be tons of poeple thinking the same and tons of people heading for one and im sure you wouldent want to atempt to take one with freash zombies on the move instead i advis to just stay clear of them I just hope im not in the military when zday hits or happens i have the destinct feeling i would be quite screwed but still would be following orders unless i was in a fenced in area that would be able to hold off a horde of zombies that has gallons of gasoline in some kind of storage and some object to light the gas i would be quite safe for a while untel i got hungry andmost likly starved to death Do you find this valuable?

I dont know what kind of military base your thinking of other then freakin cheyenne mountian, but most bases in america are places where people work and live, they are not fall out shelters for the apocalypse. yes they are sorrounded by chain link fences and iron gates, however unless your base in question happens to house frontline troops i doubt you'll find alot of weapons. For example, i live and work at a naval base in SO CAL, the base is guarded by a wrought iron and chain link fence, however to my knowledge there is no huge stockpile of weapons probaly due to the fact that its a naval base, im sure the gate guards have an armory but nothing massive. US bases arnt designed to withstand an attack, just the occasinal Derka derka whacko. you'd be better off with the Maginot line for a zombie attack, Norad would be nice, im sure the Ruskies got some ex soviet bunkers kicking around too 1  out of 1 found this valuable. you know you can now purchase the old titan missile silo's, they go for about $200,000 apiece but to build yourself a 14 story live in bunker is worth it! keep an eye out for em and check em out! Do you find this valuable?

yeah show up to a military base and these are the most likely outcomes:
shot on sight
involuntarily volunteered (and fight the way they tell you which will get you killed)
or shuffled away not to be heard from no matter what you may know about the situation
or the unit has gone rogue and you are killed for your stuff or enslaved
unlikely that you will come across a unit that keeps its cool and helps people when society is breaking down all around them
i don't like any of these outcomes so i will steer clear of military outposts
